For over 12 years, It Works Learning Center, Inc. has trained and placed thousands of successful graduates in Baltimore. It Works is licensed by and in good standing with the Maryland Higher Education Commission and the Maryland Board of Nursing.

Our free University of Maryland Medical Center training program is only for individuals who already have their CNA/GNA, and want to upgrade to a Patient Care Technician or PCT. Though there are no placement guarantees, graduates are expected to accept employment at University of Maryland Medical Center. To be eligible, you need to have current CNA/GNA licenses, active CPR certification, worked full-time for at least 6-12 months as a CNA/GNA, have a verifiable high school diploma or GED, have an acceptable criminal background, pass a health screen, live in Baltimore City and meet all other eligibility requirements.

You need to wear clean scrubs - no other clothing is acceptable. Please remove all facial piercings, small earrings are acceptable, and do your best to cover all visible tattoos. If you wear acrylic, gel or other fake nails, they will need to be removed. Please make sure your hair is conservative in appearance, in a natural color. Also, please do not bring any children, as we do not provide childcare.

This will be an 8 week day class, generally held 5 days each week, Monday through Friday. Depending on the subject material and day, classes will start at either 7am or 8am and will end at 2pm or as late as 3pm. Class should start by August 23 and end October 15, 2010. There are no placement guarantees; however, you will be expected to accept full time employment immediately after graduation at University of Maryland Medical Center. The schedule is always subject to change.

The successful candidate will have responsibility and accountability for medical oversight of all Martek's pre-clinical and clinical research programs worldwide. The research programs will evaluate new clinical and commercial applications for long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids and other nutritional and/or pharmaceutical compounds in humans and animals using pharmaceutical and/or nutritional study approaches. Primary research includes substantiation for the role of these compounds in healthy and diseased populations.

The individual is expected to provide a high level of medical and clinical insight, initiative and leadership, and develop a high degree of cooperation with and timely feedback to domestic and international project teams. The individual must be able to evaluate potential new products and the medical component of any new products. The individual is expected to work with the commercial group to determine potential acquisitions and licensing opportunities.

The position requires an individual equally comfortable in scientific and business environments, with the ability to communicate medical information at all levels of management. This individual should also feel comfortable acting as an advocate for the Company where appropriate.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
<br>
1. Formulate, in collaboration with the Executive Director of Clinical Research, a comprehensive pre-clinical and clinical research strategy covering near and long-term actions for the development of products consistent with marketing needs. Design and implement, as needed, preclinical and clinical studies conducted under IND regulations and/or for support for NDA submissions.
<br>
2. Present aspects of the Medical Clinical Research Program to the Clinical Research Management Committee.
<br>
3. Work with Discovery team to evaluate potential new or under-explored benefits of DHA. Support new technology and business development through evaluation and due diligence relating to the medical benefits of new products which may be acquired or licensed.
<br>
4. Develop, maintain, and implement plans for staffing for Medical Research in consultation with the Executive Director of Clinical Research to support the research program, based upon a pre-determined strategy of what capabilities Martek must have in-house and what may reasonably be outsourced.
<br>
5. Build and maintain Clinical Research as a Good Clinical Practice operation with active, up to date, SOPs and training of staff.
<br>
6. Provide medical review, input and oversight to development of protocols, investigator brochures, regulatory filings, study summaries/ reports and manuscripts for publication.
<br>
7. Seek and work with thought leaders and most renowned clinical experts in fields of interest to Martek to obtain advice and guidance on clinical research plans and to gain insight into FDA review requirements. Also oversee investigator network to be involved in future Martek-sponsored trials.
<br>
8. Ensure successful and timely completion and regular reporting to management of progress of Martek-sponsored trials.
<br>
9. Review, assess, and report to management/business units or regulatory agencies as appropriate any adverse events reported to Martek. Work with Regulatory Affairs to develop appropriate Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to support the business.
<br>
10. Provide critical medical review and analysis of investigator-initiated protocols. Provide adequate support, documentation, oversight and, as necessary, monitoring of investigator-initiated trials. Establish relationships with key investigators evaluating benefits of DHA outside of Martek core application areas.
<br>
11. Facilitate good communication and coordination between Clinical Research and Sales & Marketing, Regulatory Affairs, Operations and Quality Assurance.
<br>
12. Maintain medical and scientific skills by attending educational courses as appropriate to the job. See that all reports likewise maintain skills appropriate to their jobs.
<br>
13. Participate in academic and administrative organizations as appropriate for the current needs of Martek and its clinical research program. Keep abreast of scientific literature relating to the Company's current and future products.

14. Other duties as assigned by management.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Lead and direct the work of other medical research staff on projects
<br>
2. Oversee and direct the activities of others on medical research team, such as clinical project managers and clinical research scientists.

3. Delegate project tasks and establish goals and timelines for team members.
<br>
4. Manage the performance and development of medical research staff and any outside consultants or contract service providers who may be involved in medical/clinical research.

5. Guide team members to write manuscripts, reports or abstracts for publication.

REQUIREMENTS:
<br>
The successful candidate will possess most of the following attributes:
<br>
1. MD degree or MD PhD with a minimum of 5 years of experience in Clinical Research leadership roles. Board certification preferred and a U.S. state medical license required.
<br>
2. Successful track record in Clinical research positions, including experience in pharmaceutical product development and successful FDA negotiation for new Rx product labeling and release. Nutritional products experience also highly desirable. Experiences with products in pediatrics, neurology, nutrition or cardiology are preferred. Some experience in performing clinical research in a smaller company environment would be a plus.
<br>
3. Good working knowledge and understanding of applicable Code of Federal Regulations especially pertaining to ICH Guidelines, GCPs and GLPs is required. Experience in performing research trials outside the U.S. is preferred, but not required.
<br>
4. Successful candidate will be accomplishment oriented (and have track record to support), entrepreneurial and exhibit strong leadership, organization, interpersonal and communication skills.
<br>
5. Knowledge of fatty acid metabolism and its role in human biology is a plus.

Our free University of Maryland Medical Center training program is only for individuals who already have their CNA/GNA, and want to upgrade to a Patient Care Technician or PCT. Though there are no placement guarantees, graduates are expected to accept employment at University of Maryland Medical Center. This will be an 8 week day class, generally held 5 days each week, Monday through Friday.
