1 VOTER, 72 REGISTRATIONS
'ACORN PAID ME IN CASH & CIGS'

PAWNS IN 'FRAUD': Freddie Johnson, yesterday in Cleveland, and Lateala Goins told of filling out voter registrations multiple times in the ACORN scandal.

October 10, 2008CLEVELAND - A man at the center of a voter-registration scandal told a source yesterday he was given cash and cigarettes by aggressive ACORN activists in exchange for registering an astonishing 72 times, in apparent violation of Ohio laws. "Sometimes, they come up and bribe me with a cigarette, or they'll give me a dollar to sign up," said Freddie Johnson, 19, who filled out 72 separate voter-registration cards over an 18-month period at the behest of the left-leaning Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now. "The ACORN people are everywhere, looking to sign people up. I tell them I am already registered. The girl said, 'You are?' I say, 'Yup,' and then they say, 'Can you just sign up again?' " he said. Johnson used the same information on all of his registration cards, and officials say they usually catch and toss out duplicate registrations. But the practice sparks fear that some multiple registrants could provide different information and vote more than once by absentee ballot. ACORN is under investigation in Ohio and at least eight other states - including Missouri, where the FBI said it's planning to look into potential voter fraud - for over-the-top efforts to get as many names as possible on the voter rolls regardless of whether a person is registered or eligible. It's even under investigation in Bridgeport, Conn., for allegedly registering a 7-year-old girl to vote, according to the State Elections Enforcement Commission. Meanwhile, a federal judge yesterday ordered Ohio's Secretary of State to verify the identity of newly registered voters by matching them with other government documents. The order was in response to a Republican lawsuit unrelated to the ACORN probe in Cuyahoga County, in which at least three people, including Johnson, have been subpoenaed. Bribing citizens with gifts, property or anything of value is a fourth-degree felony in Ohio, punishable by up to 18 months in prison. And it's a fifth-degree felony - punishable by 12 months in jail - for a person to pay "compensation on a fee-per-registration" system when signing up someone to vote. Johnson, who works at a cellphone kiosk in downtown Cleveland, said he was a sitting duck for the signature hunters, but was always happy to help them out in exchange for a smoke or a little scratch. He'd collected 10 to 20 cigarettes and anywhere from $10 to $15, he said. The Cleveland voting probe, first reported by The Post yesterday, also focused on Lateala Goins, who said she put her name on multiple voter registrations. She guessed ACORN canvassers then put fake addresses on them. "You can tell them you're registered as many times as you want - they do not care," she said. ACORN spokesman Kris Harsh said the group does not tolerate its workers paying people to sign the voter-registration cards. ACORN's political wing has endorsed Barack Obama for president, but Ben LaBolt, a spokesman for the Obama campaign in Ohio, said ACORN has no role in its get-out-the-vote drive. During the primary season, however, the Obama camp paid another group, Citizen Service Inc., $832,598 for various political services, according to Federal Elections Commission filings. That group and ACORN share the same board of directors. In Wisconsin yesterday, John McCain blasted ACORN. "No one should be corrupting the most precious right we have, that is the right to vote," he said. It's a right Johnson will exercise. "Yeah, I've registered enough - I might as well vote."

General Petraeus at Heritage
While American forces have made substantial progress in Iraq, Gen. David Petreaus said Wednesday at The Heritage Foundation, the progress is still fragile and reversible.

Nevertheless, the situation is much less fragile than before, explained Petraeus, the architect of the successful surge strategy in Iraq. In June 2007, before the surge, there were 180 insurgent attacks per day in Iraq. Today, there are fewer than 25 daily attacks.

Missile defense is imperative
While the financial crisis rightly remains at the center of attention on newscasts and on the campaign trail, we must keep in mind another potential crisis issue: America's vulnerability to missile attack.

The preamble to the Constitution states that it is the government's responsibility to "provide for the common defense." Our military is therefore obligated to defend the nation against long-rang missile attack, Heritage expert Peter Brookes explains in the latest edition of Policy Review.

"Today there are 28 countries with ballistic missile arsenals of varying capability," Brookes says, and several of them pose a threat to the United States.

In March, 1983, President Ronald Reagan's introduced the missile defense program when he announced the Strategic Defense Initiative. The Heritage Foundation helped lay the intellectual groundwork for President Reagan's missile defense policy. In fact, the "High Frontier" study that formed the basis for his policy was written at Heritage.
Heritage will release 33 Minutes, a full-length, high-definition documentary about the need for missile defense, in February.

Congressman recognizes Heritage's achievements
Speaking on the floor of the House of Representatives last week, Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) praised Heritage for our 35 years of advancing conservative ideas in Washington and around the country:

Madam Speaker, I wish to recognize The Heritage Foundation on the 35th anniversary of their founding. Since 1973, Heritage has been a stalwart in promoting and educating the American people on the merits of conservative, free market principles. Their belief in the power of individual liberty, American values, and limited government is matched by their dedication to a strong national defense.

The Heritage Foundation has been intricately involved in the rise of modern conservatism.

From its influence in the days of the Reagan Revolution to the Contract with America and in promoting a strong national defense and sound economic growth in the aftermath of September 11th, I commend The Heritage Foundation for over three decades of important work to help our Nation's leaders build a stronger America.

Family and Religion. In a new in-depth research paper, Heritage expert Christine Kim evaluates "the parent factor" in preventing underage sex. She also lays out a prescription for what parents and policymakers should do in light of troubling statistics about promiscuity even among preteens. At the end of the day, Kim says, there is no substitute for parents investing in a strong relationship with their kids.
Protect America. Heritage national security expert Mackenzie Eaglen wrote the cover story for this month's issue of Armed Forces Journal, an influential magazine read widely among defense policymakers. In it, she explains the need to continue essential investments in our armed forces to ensure the country is strong enough to meet future threats.

defiled and rendered infertile.

Wars are conducted without our consent... and the slaughter,

uniquely opportune, that we as the working class engage ourselves in

the great task of putting an end to this state of affairs.

And that will be accomplished only when we dismantle the systems that

make this state of affairs possible: thoroughly and decisively, once

Here, in this shattering new interview, Stephen Spoonamore goes into harrowing detail about the Bush regime's election fraud, past, present and--if we don't spread the word right now--to come. Since he's the only whistle-blower out there who knows the perps themselves, and how they operate, we have to send this new piece far and wide.
Here Spoon tells us that McBush's team--i.e., Karl Rove and his henchpersons-- have their plan in place to steal this next election: by 51.2% of the popular vote, and three electoral votes.
He also talks about the major role played by the Christianist far right in the electronic rigging of the vote.
And he defines our electronic voting system as a major threat to US national security, calling for it to be junked ASAP, in favor of hand-counted paper ballots.
Since Spoon is a Republican and erstwhile McCain supporter, as well as a noted specialist in nosing out computer fraud, his testimony is essential--not only for its expertise, but, no less, for the impact that his views will surely have on those Republicans who have been loath to see what Bush & Co. has done to our election system.
That whole story's just about to break. In fact, tomorrow there will be a number of articles appearing, on a recent breakthrough in the lawsuit that Spoon's testimony has enabled, and on other aspects of that all-important case.
MCM
9/26/08: New Spoonamore Interview - E-voting Machines are a National Security Threat
Last week, VR interviewed GOP Cyber security expert Stephen Spoonamore about the upcoming election and his testimony in the new Ohio litigation to take depositions of Karl Rove and others.
The video is posted in full below with ten short clips for You Tube viewing. This interview is so important and explosive that we urge everyone to watch it.
Spoonamore says that the GOP wanted e-voting to steal elections but now foreign governments will be hacking and the winner will be determined by the best hackers. He says that if the GOP wins the hacking competition, McCain will win 51.2 percent with three electoral votes over Obama, and it will be a stolen election.
Spoon also makes a crucial point about the people who have been implicated in much of the election theft: "They are religious extremists." He names those who know about stolen elections, and he insists that the only way to protect this election is with paper ballots, hand-counted.

Stephen Spoonamore warns in a new interview that electronic voting machines represent a national security threat and that hackers are already planning to steal the 2008 presidential election for John McCain.
Spoonamore is a GOP member and a lifelong Republican, having worked on election campaigns with Rudy Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg. He also has 20 years worth of experience in encrypted and networked communications systems for banks, TV, telecommunications, EMS, Military and other uses.
In an ten part You Tube interview, Spoonamore warns that hackers are planning to steal the election on behalf of the McCain camp and even predicts the margin of victory, that McCain will make a “shocking recovery” and win 51.2 percent of the vote with three electoral votes over Obama.

“This is a national security threat,” said Spoonamore, “it is very possible for a foreign government to begin manipulating that transmission of code just as they attempt to do fairly often with our financial data….we deal with it every day on the commercial side,” he added, noting that China, and not the American people, has a greater chance of choosing the next U.S. president.

Spoonamore also fingered Israel as another foreign government that was planning to attempt to hack the 2008 election.
“We don’t know who’s changing the vote now - these weird results are coming in all over,” said Spoonamore, adding that the danger of the vote being hacked by Israel, China or Russia is an even greater threat than partisan vote fraud on behalf of the Democrats and Republicans.
“You’ve built a vulnerable system and many people would want to exploit that vulnerability and not all of them have the best interests of our nation at heart,” he added.
In the interview, Spoonamore stresses how easy it is to hack an electronic voting machine and rig an election.

“If people think that a voting machine that calls in to a tabulator is any different than all those cash registers calling in to the central processor - it’s the same thing,” said Spoonamore. “If you put a man in the middle attack, a computer sitting in the middle that can change or capture or manipulate the information, it will do so,” he added.

“It’s valuable to be president….if you can steal it for a couple of million bucks why not,” said Spoonamore, adding that the last two presidential elections were stolen.
Spoonamore said that he had personally witnessed people attempting to hack election systems and since going public with his testimony had received threats not to talk about vote fraud because it would undermine American’s confidence in the voting process, to which Spoonamore responded that people should doubt their vote because “it’s being stolen”.

Spoonamore said that top Republican operatives had told him that election hacking was “just a different methodology” but they didn’t grasp the fact that if you build a hackable system, “there’s hundreds of sharks that want to hack it and you will not know who the final hacker was.”
Spoonamore said that the only way to prevent elections being stolen is a complete return to paper ballots, a “move back to what worked so well for 190 years,” and the elimination of electronic voting machines.

| http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MGT_cSi7Rs | Buy this shirt from me. things are not as they seem | Why does Sen. Barack Obama play hide the ball with his personal resume, concealing his extreme leftist ideology and denying his damning associations? Question kind of answers itself, wouldn't you say? Be concerned, very concerned.

Mr. Obama hides his liberalism for the same reason every other liberal presidential candidate has: The electorate tilts center-right. This isn't just my gut speaking or some self-serving theory I'm propounding.

The Battleground poll - a well-respected bipartisan affair conducted by the Terrance Group, a Republican polling organization - and Lake Research Partners, a Democratic organization, tells us 60 percent of Americans identify themselves as conservatives.

But the specifics are even more telling. Twenty percent consider themselves very conservative, 40 percent somewhat conservative, 2 percent moderate, 27 percent liberal, 9 percent very liberal, and 3 percent don't know or didn't answer.

So John Kerry in 2004 and Barack Obama in 2008 didn't deny they were the most liberal senators because liberalism has become a dirty word through a clever conservative propaganda campaign. They denied it because liberalism is a minority position in reality, albeit an extraordinarily effective vocal minority.

Mr. Obama will only come clean about his liberalism when he thinks he is in safe territory, as he did at the San Francisco fundraiser where he trashed small-town Americans, thinking his words wouldn't reach those he was belittling. Nor is Mr. Obama upfront about the liberal nature of his policy proposals, choosing instead to mask their liberalism and even disguise them as conservative.

How else do you explain his whopper that he is recommending a tax cut for 95 percent of Americans when we know that the bottom 50 percent of income earners pay very little income tax at all? His plan calls for giving many of these people tax credits, even though they are paying no tax or are paying a small enough amount that the credit would result in them netting money from the government. As others have pointed out, this is welfare, not a tax cut. "Tax cut" resonates well among center-right voters; "welfare" does not.

On foreign policy, suffice it to say that Mr. Obama would never want the center-right electorate to know the extent of his appeasement and retreat-and-defeat orientation, his support for the bankrupting and sovereignty-forfeiting Global Poverty Act or his goal of eliminating U.S. nuclear weapons, as reported by the New York Times.

But where Mr. Obama is really playing hide the ball is in his past and present associations. His campaign operatives and the mainstream media have done their best to divert any attention from these relationships by saying it's dirty campaigning to smear him through the acts of others. Well, folks, that's not how ordinary people think. In sizing up someone's character, we often consider with whom they associate. Sue us if you wish - even start a class action - but it won't change human nature, which leads us, rationally, to consider this factor.

Endless reports and many books have been written documenting Barack Obama's discipleship in the thug tactics of Saul Alinsky's "Rules for Radicals." For Mr. Obama, community organizing was not an innocuous vehicle for assisting the needy. It was and is a cynically dangerous vehicle for the politics of extortion and intimidation and the usurpation of power by socialists, whose ideology and methods more closely resemble those of Josef Stalin than those of Mother Teresa.

These sources also prove beyond any reasonable doubt Mr. Obama's close - not remote, not casual - relationship with the nihilistic, America-hating, Pentagon-bombing radical William Ayers. Mr. Obama glibly dismisses the very idea that he should be blamed for a passing acquaintanceship with a guy who was bombing the Pentagon "when [Mr. Obama] was 8 years old."

Enough with the insults to our intelligence, Mr. Obama. You were not 8 when you launched your state senate campaign in Mr. Ayers' home. You were not 8 when you served in the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, which Mr. Ayers was instrumental in establishing. You are not 8 today, though you are still Mr. Ayers' close friend, while he remains an America-hating radical, wholly unrepentant about his terrorist activities, other than to say he didn't do enough.

The fact that Mr. Obama would be seen in the same room with this guy should disqualify him from presidential aspirations. But he's not just in the same room. In many ways, he's on the same page, as evidenced by his default instinct to apologize for America and to blame America first.

But Mr. Obama will continue striving to hide the ball on this association and many others, including those with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Tony Rezko.

But beware; if anyone dares to expose those relationships and their sordid details, he will open himself up to malicious and fraudulent charges of racism and other Saul Alinsky thug tactics that make Bill Clinton's politics of personal destruction look like child's play.

John Murtha for slander on Thursday, saying the Congressman damaged his reputation by saying Marines killed women and children "in cold blood" in Haditha, Iraq, in November 2005.

Justin Sharratt filed the federal lawsuit in Pittsburgh. Sharratt claims the comments Murtha, a high-ranking Democrat, made on various news shows in May 2006 also violated his constitutional rights to due process and presumption of innocence.

"Sharratt, in being labeled repeatedly by Murtha as a 'cold-blooded murderer,' and by Murtha outrageously claiming that the Haditha incident was comparable to the infamous (My Lai) massacre of Vietnam, has suffered permanent, irreversible damage to his reputation," the lawsuit states.

Two dozen Iraqis, including women and children, were killed in Haditha on Nov. 19, 2005, after one Marine died and two others were wounded by a roadside bomb. Murtha, a former Marine and decorated Vietnam War veteran, learned of the killings and began speaking out about them, saying that troops in Iraq were being put under too much pressure.

Sharratt, 24, of the Pittsburgh suburb of Canonsburg, was initially charged with three counts of premeditated murder, but was exonerated after a full investigation and a hearing.

In the lawsuit, Sharratt accuses Murtha of repeatedly saying on CNN, NBC and other outlets that Sharratt and his fellow Marines "overreacted because of the pressure on them and killed innocent civilians in cold blood."

Murtha said the Haditha killings were comparable to the March 1968 My Lai massacre, when American servicemen killed as many as 504 Vietnamese villagers, Sharratt's lawyer, Noah Geary, said in a statement.

"Throughout the whole thing, I knew I didn't do anything wrong," Sharratt told reporters.

Sharratt did not immediately return calls and e-mails for comment Thursday. Geary and Sharratt were holding an afternoon news conference.

Sharratt is the second Marine to sue the Pennsylvania Democrat over his comments about Haditha. Staff Sgt. Frank Wuterich sued Murtha for defamation in 2006.

Four enlisted Marines, including Sharratt, were originally charged for their roles in the killings and four officers were charged in connection to the investigation. One officer was acquitted and charges have since been dropped against everyone else except Wuterich, whose case is pending.

Wuterich, of Meriden, Conn., has pleaded not guilty to charges of voluntary manslaughter. He is accused of then ordering his men to clear several houses with grenades and gunfire, leading to the deaths of women and children.

In his lawsuit, Wuterich said several civilians were killed when his squad pursued insurgents, firing at them from inside a house. Wuterich describes a house-to-house hunt that went wrong in the midst of a confusing battlefield. He had denied through his lawyers any vengeful massacre.

Murtha's office did not respond to a call for comment .

Lending money to people who probably won’t pay it back isn’t good business. If you wrap crummy loans in a clever package, they’re still crummy loans.

Your typical Wal Mart shopper understands this. But the Masters of the Universe on Wall Street and in Washington evidently didn’t.

There are a lot of people to blame for the subprime mortgage crisis. The Federal Reserve Board under Chairman Alan Greenspan (1987-2006) pursued what seems in hindsight clearly to have been way too loose a monetary policy. Banks were awash with money to lend, and got careless in how they lent it.

Ostensibly to aid the poor, the Clinton administration and Congress encouraged lenders to give mortgages to poor credit risks. The combination of easy money and the expansion of the number of borrowers by extending loans to poor credit risks sent housing prices through the roof, creating the bubble whose bursting has led to this crisis.

Congress in 1999 repealed the law (the Glass-Steagall Act) that established a bright line between commercial and investment banks. This meant bad investments by banks could jeopardize depositors. Wall Street created “derivatives” which multiplied profits in good times, but which also multiplied risk if there were defaults.

Most important was corruption and mismanagement at the Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae) and the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac), which together controlled 90 percent of the secondary mortgage market.

Once your bank has lent you money to buy a house, it can’t lend the money again until you pay it back. But if your bank sells your mortgage, it can make another loan right away. Without the secondary market, most of the funds for home mortgages would dry up.

Fannie and Freddie went broke because they had bought billions of dollars worth of subprime mortgages, on which borrowers defaulted when the housing bubble popped. Fannie bought most of its bad mortgages from Countrywide Financial, whose CEO, Angelo Mozilo, gave sweetheart loans to senior executives of Fannie Mae.

Fannie and Freddie cooked their books so senior executives would be paid millions of dollars in bonuses to which they were not entitled. Inadequate regulation kept the book-cooking from being discovered until the crisis had become a catastrophe.

President Bush proposed regulatory reforms in 2003, but Congress took no action. In 2005, John McCain and three other GOP senators proposed a strong reform bill. It died when Democrats threatened a filibuster. When the bill was reintroduced in this Congress, Sen. Chris Dodd, the new Democratic chairman of Banking Committee, refused even to hold a hearing on it.

Democrats opposed reform in part because they feared it would mean fewer loans to poor people.

“Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are not facing any kind of financial crisis,” Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass, told the New York Times when the Bush bill was introduced. ”The more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing.”

Democrats and some Republicans opposed reform because Fannie and Freddie were very good at greasing palms. Fannie spent $170 million on lobbying since 1998, and $19.3 million on political contributions since 1990.

The principal recipient of Fannie Mae’s largesse was Sen. Dodd. Number two was Barack Hussein Obama.

Sen. Dodd was also the second largest recipient in the Senate of contributions from Countrywide’s PAC and its employees. The number one senator on Countrywide’s list?

Barack Hussein Obama.

Fannie Mae CEO Franklin Raines was forced to resign in December, 2004, because of “accounting irregularities.” The Washington Post reported July 16 the Obama campaign has called Mr. Raines “seeking his advice on mortgage and housing policy matters.”

Sen. Obama appointed Mr. Raines’ predecessor, James Johnson, as head of his vice presidential search committee, until he was also implicated in “accounting irregularities,” and it was revealed he’d received cut rate loans from Countrywide.

Chicago billionaire Penny Pritzker, chairman of Sen. Obama’s finance committee, cooked the books to conceal losses from subprime mortgages at her now defunct Superior bank. The holding company her family owned collected $200 million in dividends on phony profits.

The trouble with crony capitalism isn’t capitalism. It’s the cronies.
The scene : Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson falling to one knee to beg House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to get the House to approve the $700 billion bailout of Wall Street. So desperate. Man up, Hank.

One problem: if Pelosi wanted to get the package through, she could do it in the blink of an eye. The Democrats are the MAJORITY. And yet, she and Barney Frank and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer are screaming about how "impossible" the Republicans are being in opposing this behemoth bill.

But remember: Pelosi has 230 plus votes. Girlfriend can pass whatever she wants, and often does, from opposing the Iraq war by underfunding it to last week's sham drilling bill. Her party is the MAJORITY. She and Hoyer cry out for the need for Republican votes on the bailout, when in fact, they need none.

So why all of the drama?

Because the Democrats need cover. They are so eager to fork over $700 billion of YOUR money to...whom? Wall Street. Bankers. Plutocrats. They are so quick to pass off your money to these villains that they need the Republicans to go along so they can ALL get the blame if it goes south.

The Democrats, who get more money from Wall Street these days than the Republicans do, are supposed to be the party of "the common man?" "The average Joe?" Sure.

The latest is that Pelosi now threatens to ram through the bill, to which the House Republicans say, "Be our guest." The vast majority of Americans oppose this package as currently constituted: it's way too much government intervention for them, with too few guarantees that they'll get their money back. The Republicans know this, and it dovetails with their basic philosophy of limited government and fiscal discipline.

Voila! Huge victory for the Republicans, and for John McCain. Suddenly, the Democrats are working with President Bush (whom they still loathe and deride) and his administration (which they've called "incompetent" for years. Is it still incompetent? The Dems suddenly think the administration is wise and swell.)

The Republicans are now marching with the average American while the Democrats have thrown in with Wall Street.

And now McCain---who has completely eclipsed the feckless Barack Obama on this----can say that reform, transparency, accountability, caution, humility, and taxpayer protections will be the order of a McCain administration.

Those things have always been true for McCain, and they are truer still.

If you're not outraged, you're not paying attention... | "Government never furthered any enterprise but by the alacrity with which it got out of its way." – Henry David Thoreau

I've got to say, I don't see how that quote is sending the right message. To me, it's clear that the biggest cause of this problem *was* getting out of enterprise's way. With the systematic deregulation of the finance industry, banks were suddenly allowed to make these bad loans with no government oversight whatsoever. This may be philosophically sound to you, and if so, I can certainly appreciate your point of view, but we've gotten out of its way enough already, if you ask me, and it's time for us to get together and compel these greed-driven institutions to grow some scruples.

No, the government may not further enterprise, but regulation keeps things responsible and sustainable, and the people who have, by now, got our national economy by the balls/ovaries, clearly have no interest in being either.

There are four big possibilities for the future of the economy:

1. No bailout, no oversight. Whoo! Laissez-faire temps rouler! The market crashes even harder, even farther, and when we eventually pick ourselves up by the bootstraps, nobody's going to stop executives from getting us into another crash, months, years, decades down the line.
2. Bailout, no oversight. This is what AIG, Lehman Brothers, Fannie AND Freddie want. The Second Great Depression is at best delayed, and at worst, delayed and heightened still further. For the moment, something is done to pause the crash and perhaps even rewind it by a few months. Ordinary Americans are put in a temporarily-no-worse situation, but unless you believe in the Trickle-Down Fairy, our situation isn't going to improve either.
3. No bailout, oversight! If you ask me, this is the most philosophically sound solution, but our chances of crashing are pretty damn high. That said, as a college student, I'm already thousands of dollars in debt, and don't want to be in thousands more to reward the mistakes of gluttonous bankers. In this situation, the industry is made to suffer for its mistakes, and make no mistake about it, we will suffer as well as they bring the rest of the market down with them. That said, when we recover, and we will, solid regulations will be in place, to force them to be responsible with our money.
4. Bailout with oversight. It leaves a REAL sour taste in my mouth, adding $700 billion more to our already towering national debt because these morons couldn't keep the industry afloat. And I'm not going to feel good about this bill, unless the laws in place do more than just keep them from doing what they've been doing. If the government is going to charge me for their mistakes, I want them to get charged too. I don't want to pay ANYONE who was responsible for this situation more than $50,000 a year as long as we're paying for it. Forget about CAPS on their raises, I want caps on their pay, period. I want them to be able to afford a modest house, health insurance, a modest car, food, clothing, and that's about it...in other words, what far too many of us don't have. They can increase their salary once *we* aren't forced to pay it. This is on top, of course, of what should be painfully obvious as far as what the rest of the bill should be doing: putting an end to unsustainable loaning practices, having a strong oversight presence to ensure that they're spending MY money responsibly, and installing a safety net for people at risk of foreclosure.

This is a hard situation no matter what, folks. I don't want the bailout either...but bailout or no bailout, the real change we need has to do with the leash we keep these guys on. To my Libertarian neighbors, I agree with you on many points practically, and perhaps all points philosophically. This is a practical point where we will differ. What we've been seeing is what happens when you have a laissez-faire approach to the economy. | It's happening folks. Paul Joseph Watson

Prison Planet

Thursday, September 25, 2008

From shying away from even mentioning such terms as “recession,” “unemployment” or “bank failures,” Bush, Bernanke and Paulson are now vigorously invoking the fear of financial meltdown as part of a campaign of economic terror to blackmail the American people into accepting the power-grabbing “bailout,” while John McCain, who last week said the fundamentals of the economy are strong, is now all but threatening to cancel the election should the proposal not receive swift passage.
Bush’s speech last night was a throwback to his March 2003 stump before the invasion of Iraq - replace words like “weapons of mass destruction” with “financial panic” and the tone of the two is not dissimilar.
Bush rammed home the fear by appealing to people’s personal anxieties.
“More banks could fail, including some in your community. The stock market would drop even more, which would reduce the value of your retirement account. The value of your home could plummet. Foreclosures would rise dramatically,” barked the President.
“And if you own a business or a farm, you would find it harder and more expensive to get credit. More businesses would close their doors, and millions of Americans could lose their jobs.”
Bernanke and Paulson spewed similar rhetoric during Tuesday’s Senate Banking Committee meeting. Compare their dire proclamations with their outright refusal to even entertain the notion of a recession as little as seven months ago.
Now Paulson tells us that people “should be scared” and that the only solution is for taxpayers to foot the bill to the tune of $700 billion dollars - a number we now learn was simply pulled out of thin air by the Treasury - while the Federal Reserve swallows up all manner of new regulation powers.
It seems that almost overnight these three stooges have gone from behaving like sedated zombies to end-times doomsayers.
Furthermore, John McCain, the man who as recently as last week proclaimed that “the fundamentals of the economy are sound,” is now canceling presidential debates, and some fear greasing the skids for the postponement of the presidential election itself, by insisting he and Obama “return to Washington” in order to put their weight behind the bailout.
As the George Washington Blog notes, McCain is basically implying, “Vote for the bailout or I’ll pull out of the election”.

The financial terrorism being perpetrated by Bush, McCain, Bernanke, Paulson and the rest of these criminals in threatening Americans with unbridled chaos unless they acquiesce to political demands, and the coordinated ferocity with which it is being delivered, is necessary for the crooks because they are desperate to get the bailout passed before Congress really has a chance to digest exactly what it stands for.

This is what’s called the “shock doctrine,” the accelerated passage of what is essentially dictatorial legislation without proper scrutiny by means of exploiting a temporary state of fear.

This is not just about $700 billion of taxpayers’ money and the continued sacking of the dollar, it’s about the imposition of a giant new infrastructure of control and regulation on behalf of the private, run for profit, Federal Reserve.

Bush even alluded to it last night, stating that Paulson’s bailout would mean the “Federal Reserve would be authorized to take a closer look at the operations of companies across the financial spectrum.”

But this is merely scratching the surface. As Sen. Jim Bunning, R-Ky., said, “This massive bailout is not a solution. It is financial socialism and it’s un-American.” In fact properly defined, one could label it “national socialism,” otherwise known as fascism.
As professor of economics at New York University Nouriel Roubini framed it, welcome to the United Socialist States of America and “the most radical regime change in global economic and financial affairs in decades”.

The plan was drawn up months ago, lying in wait for the right crisis to see it enacted, just as the Patriot Act was prepared well in advance of 9/11.

The Treasury’s fact sheet about the bailout states, “The Secretary will have the discretion, in consultation with the Chairman of the Federal Reserve, to purchase other assets, as deemed necessary to effectively stabilize financial markets.”

This gives the government and the Federal Reserve carte blanche to do whatever they want to long as it is done in the name of stabilizing financial markets, they can nationalize any company or industry and use taxpayer money, above and beyond the initial $700 billion, for whatever purpose is deemed necessary, without any oversight. Paulson’s bailout plan is also unreviewable by any court, it will remain in perpetuity.
Paulson’s draft bailout plans says: “The Secretary’s authority to purchase mortgage-related assets under this Act shall be limited to $700,000,000,000 outstanding at any one time.”
As Chris Martenson writes, “This means that $700 billion is NOT the cost of this dangerous legislation, it is only the amount that can be outstanding at any one time. After, say, $100 billion of bad mortgages are disposed of, another $100 billion can be bought. In short, these four little words assure that there is NO LIMIT to the potential size of this bailout. This means that $700 billion is a rolling amount, not a ceiling.”

“The bill would bar courts from reviewing actions taken under its authority,” reports Bloomberg.
The Bush administration seeks “dictatorial power unreviewable by the third branch of government, the courts, to try to resolve the crisis,” said Frank Razzano, a former assistant chief trial attorney at the Securities and Exchange Commission now at Pepper Hamilton LLP in Washington. “We are taking a huge leap of faith.”
“It sounds like Paulson is asking to be a financial dictator, for a limited period of time,” said historian John Steele Gordon.
Reporter Larisa Alexandrovna calls it “the final stages of the coup,” noting, “This manufactured crisis is now to be remedied, if the fiscal fascists get their way, with the total transfer of Congressional powers (the few that still remain) to the Executive Branch and the total transfer of public funds into corporate (via government as intermediary) hands.”
The legislation would provide billions to foreign central banks in addition to private foreign banks.
The proposed move represents a total shift of U.S. taxpayers’ funds into the hands of powerful private interests, some of which do not even represent American companies.

The bailout bill represents the most fascist centralization of power in America since 9/11 and the Patriot Act - and many would argue that it even trumps that. The fiscal terrorists hope to ram through their agenda by appealing to people’s fears about the economy, their jobs, their houses and their pensions. But the temporary pain brought on by a Wall Street crash and a severe recession would be nothing compared to the long term death knell that the bailout bill would mean to the free market and economic liberty in America.

THIS WILL INVOLVE THE TRANSFER THE SUM OF $700,000,000,000.00 (SEVEN HUNDERED BILLION UNITED STATES DOLLARS) INTO OUR ACCOUNTS. THE ABOVE SUM HAS BEEN CALCULATED FROM AN OVER-INVOICED CONTRACT, EXECUTED, COMMISSIONED AND PAID FOR ABOUT FIVE YEARS (5) AGO BY PRIVATE CONTRACTORS. THIS ACTION WAS ALSO INTENTIONAL AND SINCE THEN, THE CONTRACT HAS BEEN IN A SUSPENSE ACCOUNT AT VARIOUS BANKING AND FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS.

WE ARE NOW READY TO TRANSFER THE FUND LOCALLY AND THAT IS WHERE YOU COME IN. IT IS IMPORTANT TO INFORM YOU THAT AS CIVIL SERVANTS, WE ARE FORBIDDEN TO OPERATE ON PRIVATE ACCOUNTS; THAT IS WHY WE REQUIRE YOUR ASSISTANCE. THE TOTAL SUM WILL BE SHARED AS FOLLOWS: 70% FOR US, 25% FOR YOU AND 5% FOR LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL EXPENSES INCIDENT TO THE TRANSFER. THE TRANSFER IS RISK FREE ON BOTH SIDES BUT WE CANNOT DIRECTLY TRANSFER THESE FUNDS BECAUSE THEY ARE CONSTANTLY UNDER SURVEILLANCE.

I AM WORKING WITH A KNOWLEDABLE PRIVATE CONSULTANT, MR. PHIL GRAM, WHO IS ACTIVE IN A PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN. AS A SENATOR, YOU MAY KNOW HIM AS THE LEADER OF THE AMERICAN BANKING DEREGULATION MOVEMENT IN THE 1990S THAT MADE THE INCREASING ECONOMIC GAINS IN THE FINANCIAL MARKETS POSSIBLE. MR. GRAM ADVISED ME THAT I SHOULD LOOK FOR A RELIABLE AND TRUSTWORTHY PERSON WHO WILL ACT AS A RESPONSIBLE ACCOUNT MANAGER SO THE FUNDS CAN BE TRANSFERRED. TO AUTHORIZE THE TRANSFER WE WILL NOT NEED ANY OF YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION. SINCE WE ARE EMPLOYED BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WE ALRADY HAVE ACCESS TO THIS INFORMATION AND YOU SHOULD NOT BE ALARMED SINCE IT IS HANDELED WITH THE UPMOST CARE AND SECURITY. WE DO REQUIRE YOU TO CONTACT YOUR CONGRESSIONAL REPRESENTATIVE AND INFORME THEM THAT YOU ARE AUTHORIZING THE TRANSFER OF FUNDS. IF YOU ARE UNAWARE OF WHO THEY MIGHT BE, THIS WEBSITE CAN HELP.

THIS IS A MATTER OF GREAT URGENCY. WE NEED THE FUNDS AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. ANY DELAY CAN JEPORDIZE THE HIGH INTEREST RETURN ON YOUR INVESTMENT SINCE THE LONGER THESE CONTRACTS ARE IN THE FINANCIAL SYSTEM THE POSSIBILITY OF THEIR DE VALUATION INCREASES PREVENTING YOU FROM REAPING THE INMENSE MONETARY REWARDS THAT AWAIT YOU.

PLEASE REPLY URGENTLY.

Joe Biden told CBS he thought an Obama campaign ad mocking John McCain as a computer illiterate was "terrible." Later, after actually seeing the ad, Biden said it was OK. McCain cannot use a keyboard due to torture induced disabilities.

Then, Biden spoke of President Franklin Roosevelt's having gone on television after the stock market crash of 1929. But Roosevelt was not president in 1929, and television was not invented yet.

Biden also said neither he nor Obama supports clean coal technology in America. But Obama does support clean coal. Obama also said of Biden's instant criticism of the government's big loan to insurance to AIG, "I think Joe should have waited ..."

Earlier, Biden said Hillary Clinton may have been a better vice presidential pick than he and said that paying more taxes is our patriotic duty . And, he encouraged wheelchair-bound Missouri State Senator Chuck Graham to stand up at a campaign rally. You just can't make up shit like this...LOL!!!

There is a gathering threat to the safety of the United States. We must take immediate action. Congress must quickly grant the President and the Secretary what they want and also give them full and unfettered authority to execute the plan.

Welcome to Economic Shock and Awe (or as some have dubbed it, according to Paul Krugman, "the Authorization for Use of Financial Force").

Even the amount of taxpayer money being bandied about -- $1 trillion -- is similar. Think you got your money's worth for the Iraq war? Congratulations -- you're about to buy another pricey debacle.

We've seen how negligent the Bush administration is with our money -- flushing billions on wasteful, mismanaged Iraq reconstruction and Katrina recovery projects.

Now the same folks who brought us those no-bid, profit-guaranteed, crony-friendly, war-and-disaster-profiteering boondoggles want us to hand them control of a $700 billion Wall Street slush fund -- with no strings attached. How dumb -- or frightened -- do they think we are?

This is, as Matt Yglesias calls it, "a crisis point for American liberalism." The battle lines are already clear: Paulson and Bush and the Republican Party want a license to reward the worst actors in the financial industry and do nothing for American families suffering the consequences.

Remember a few years ago when lawmaker after lawmaker -- mostly Democrats, but a few Republicans -- said of Iraq, "If I'd known then what I know now, I'd have voted differently."

Well, this time at least some lawmakers -- mostly Democrats, but a few Republicans -- are not being so easily bamboozled. Congressional Democrats, led by Chris Dodd in the Senate and Barney Frank in the House, have put forth proposals doing away with the Paulson's demand for unprecedented authoritarian power and adding a requirement that the government do more to help troubled borrowers refinance their mortgages.

The Treasury appears willing to bend on those elements but sticking points remain, including efforts to limit the pay of executives and Dodd's proposal that taxpayers get a share of the profits if the bad debt being bought rises in value.

Let's hope Democratic resolve holds up against the inevitable charges by the Bush administration that demands for oversight, limits on executive compensation, profit sharing for taxpayers, and aid for struggling homeowners will lead to an economic Armageddon.

There is no question that the need to address this crisis is urgent and that the issues involved are complex. But urgency and complexity cannot be allowed to become excuses for lawmakers, the media, and the public to throw up their hands and allow themselves to be bull-rushed into disastrous public policy.

Over the past 30 years, Americans have been bombarded with sermons evangelizing for the free market religion of the Right, and the supposed correlation between unregulated markets and progress. In the process, the American people have been demoted from citizens to consumers, and sold a bill of goods (rather than a Bill of Rights) about how the almighty market was the essential foundation of democracy.

In the course of selling us on buying, the market-worshippers shredded the modern social contract, the hard-fought consensus that had emerged since the New Deal, which ordered our political priorities, and expressed both our communal concern for the most vulnerable members of society and our disapproval of huge inequalities. We were now supposed to believe that all could be left up to the soulless, self-correcting calculus of supply and demand. Government involvement was an anachronism, regulatory oversight an impediment.

The last few weeks have demolished that notion. In the battle over the proper role of government, the forces of the Right, the high priests of the church of the Free Market -- including Bush, Paulson, and the Masters of Wall Street -- have suffered a monumental defeat. So why are we allowing them to dictate the terms of their surrender?

Well, at least Jack Balkin is paying attention. It's a must read.

Update: Ian notes that Obama seems to have drawn a line in the sand: NO DEAL! Although I must note, after reading Obama's remarks, I don't see anything about Section 8 or legal oversight in them AT ALL. And that is disturbing. Here are the key points:

First, there must be no blank check when American taxpayers are on the hook for this much money.

Second, taxpayers shouldn't be spending a dime to reward CEOs on Wall Street.

Third, taxpayers should be protected and should be able to recoup this investment.

Fourth, this plan has to help homeowners stay in their homes.

Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac execs now offering advice to Obama
Senator's links to mortgage giants also include campaign contributions

Fannie Mae headquarters in Washington, D.C.
NEW YORK – Campaign contributions from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac made to Barack Obama may backfire if the Democratic presidential hopeful wages an aggressive campaign to cast blame on rival John McCain and the Republicans in Congress for the mortgage-related losses that forced the U.S. Treasury to take over the quasi-governmental mortgage giants.

A review of Federal Election Commission records back to 1989 reveals Obama in his three complete years in the Senate is the second largest recipient of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae campaign contributions, behind only Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., the powerful chairman of the Senate banking committee. Dodd was first elected to the Senate in 1980.

According to OpenSecrets.com, from 1989 to 2008, Dodd received $165,400 in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac campaign contributions, including contributions from PACs and individuals, followed by Obama, who received $126,349 in such contributions since being elected to the Senate in 2004.

In contrast, McCain warned of the coming mortgage crisis as he pressed in 2005 for regulatory reform of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

"For years I have been concerned about the regulatory structure that governs Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac – known as government-sponsored entities or GSEs – and the sheer magnitude of these companies and the role they play in the housing market," McCain said on the floor of the Senate in 2005, speaking in favor of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005.

McCain pointed out Fannie Mae's regulator had stated the company's quarterly reports of profit growth over the past few years were "illusions deliberately and systematically created" by the company's senior management, which resulted in a $10.6 billion accounting scandal.

The bill passed the House but was never brought up for a vote in the Senate, largely because of Democratic opposition to change in the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac regulatory structure that remained in place until the Treasury takeover two weeks ago.

As evidenced by the failure to pass the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, the Democrats in Congress have repeatedly fought back Republican Party efforts to reform the two mortgage banking giants.

Instead, Democrats in Congress have sought to preserve the quasi-governmental status of the mortgage giants, seeing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as places to locate former top Democratic Party operatives, where they have earned millions in compensation, despite a continuing series of financial scandals. Enron-like accounting manipulation, for example, boosted earnings to a level at which massive executive bonuses could be paid.

In the aftermath of the U.S. government takeover, attention has focused on three Democrats with close ties to Obama who served as Fannie Mae executives: Franklin Raines, former Clinton administration budget director; James Johnson, former aide to Democratic Vice President Walter Mondale; and Jamie Gorelick, former Clinton administration deputy attorney general.

All three Obama-related executives earned millions in compensation from Fannie Mae.

Johnson earned $21 million in just his last year serving as Fannie Mae CEO from 1991 to 1998; Raines earned $90 million in his five years as Fannie Mae CEO, from 1999 to 2004; and Gorelick earned an estimated $26 million serving as vice chair of Fannie Mae from 1998 to 2003, according to author David Frum, a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute.

All three have been involved in mortgage-related financial scandals.
In 1998, according to the Washington Post, Gorelick, as Fannie Mae vice chairman, received a bonus of $779,625, despite a scandal in which employees falsified signatures on accounting transactions to manipulate books to meet 1998 earning targets. The moves, in turn, triggered multi-million-dollar bonuses for top executives.
Gorelick was embroiled in another controversy over an alleged conflict of interest when a 1995 memo she authored as deputy attorney general surfaced while she was a member of the 9/11 commission.

The memo, which became known as the "Gorelick Wall," appeared to establish barriers that barred federal anti-terrorist criminal investigators from accessing various federal records and databases that may have assisted them in their criminal investigations.

According to the Associated Press, Raines and several other Fannie Mae top executives were ordered in a civil lawsuit to pay nearly $31.4 million for manipulating Fannie Mae earnings over a period of six years to trigger their massive bonuses.

Raines was also forced in the settlement to give up Fannie Mae stock options valued at $15.6 million.

Last year, the Securities and Exchange Commission alleged Freddie Mac had engaged in accounting fraud from 2000 to 2002, imposing a $50 million fine on the company and on four executives fines for amounts ranging from $65,000 to $250,000.

Johnson was appointed to head Obama's vice presidential selection committee, until a controversy concerning an alleged $7 millions in questionable real estate loans he received on favorable terms from failed sub-prime mortgage lender Countrywide Financial surfaced and forced him to step down.

WND previously reported a panel chaired by Elena Kagan, dean and professor of law at Harvard Law School, speculated at the June two-day meeting of the American Constitution Society that Gorelick was a possible attorney general cabinet appointment if Obama should be elected president.

The decision by the U.S. Treasury to take over Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae could end up costing the U.S. taxpayer as much as $100 billion, although the extent of losses at the two giant mortgage companies remains to be determined.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Freddie and Fannie own or guarantee about $5.2 trillion worth of mortgages.

The riskiest loans held by Freddie and Fannie are known as "Alt-A" and sub-prime mortgages, worth about $780 billion, or about 15 percent of the total portfolio.

The federal government takeover of Freddie and Fannie passes to U.S. taxpayers the contingent liability for failures in the entire $5.2 trillion loan portfolio held by the two mortgage giants.

Over the past four quarters, Freddie and Fannie have suffered losses of about $14 billion, as the mortgage market has been hit by a wave of defaults and foreclosures not seen in the U.S. since the 1930s.
