I am looking for some "volunteer minded" people to join me in this quest to raise a record setting amount of money for the American Diabetes Association. Every thing can be done from your home using your computer and phone. Of course, there is no pay, but your name will be mentioned on our official ADA Tour de Cure web site! The event coordinator is a very important member of our team and your efforts will be much appreciated. As a small way of saying "thank you", I will send you a free e-book copy of "Pedal Against Diabetes" (after you become a volunteer and schedule our first event!).

I simply need someone who can call their local (and other small town) newspapers and schedule a date for me to appear (riding the Sidewinder trike) for a photo op and interview. Most small town newspapers are anxious to run a human interest story, especially if it is to help people in need (in our case...diabetics). At least one or two photo/interviews dates a month should be enough. I would do this myself, but I need help. Will you join me on this adventure?

You can learn more about me and what I am doing at:

http://main.diabetes.org/goto/Dr.DelPrince

All donations we raise go to the American Diabetes Association. Here's an update on upcoming and ongoing needs for volunteers with Erie Shores Humane Society, or for anyone who would like to join and help. If any of the following options appeal to you, please let me know. You are welcome to pass on this information to anyone who might be interested -- we need all of the help that we can get!

Special Events:

* "Photos with Santa", Sunday, December 7th, from 11-4 at PetSmart in Elyria, OH: Volunteers will serve in hour-long shifts in one or more of the following roles: directing interested customers through the line, taking information at the photo table, taking digital pictures of the dogs/cats with Santa, assisting our feline adoption coordinator with adoptable cats on site, staffing our information table, accepting donations, and collecting information from potential volunteers.

* "Presents for Pets", Saturday, December 13th from 12-5 at PET SUPPLIES PLUS in Elyria (next to Target): This is a "Cram the Van" type event where store customers are handed flyers by volunteers as they enter the store, with gift ideas (like pet food) that they can buy and donate as they exit the store. A radio personality from "The Wave" will be there helping out. Hopefully, the radio station's van will be used.

* Posting fundraising flyers: If you can design, print and post a flyer for us, we appreciate the added publicity!

Ongoing Needs:

* Donation cans: Volunteers are needed to find businesses who are willing to have a donation canister available in their stores. These volunteers will also check up on the canisters on a regular basis, collect money received, and make sure it is sent to the Erie Shores treasurer in a timely fashion. It is perfectly acceptable to support one canister at one business -- don't feel that you have to do them all!

* Adoption counseling at PetSmart: Volunteers are needed to assist Kimberly with Saturday cat adoptions at PetSmart in Elyria. Kimberly is generally there from 11:30 am to 5 pm - volunteers may stay the whole time or volunteer for hour shifts. We also hope to start adopting dogs at PetSmart, so if you are interested in helping with that in the future, please specify that you want to work with dogs.

* Cleaning/general support at "A Canine Corner" in Lorain: A Canine Corner is one of the kennels that houses some of our rescued dogs. Due to hard economic times, the owner has had to lay off nearly all of her staff, and desperately needs assistance with kennel cleaning, laundry, and dog socialization (getting the dogs out of the kennels and walking them is very important).

If you have any ideas for a fund raiser, please let me know!

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

Amy Roust
Volunteer Coordinator
Erie Shores Humane Society
amy7252@gmail.com
440-775-1605

My name is Melissa and I recently relocated to Broadview Heights. (Corner of Broadview and West Royalton). I was hoping to find a shelter to volunteer at. My almost 6 year old son is an animal lover. Our old roomate had a dog whom he adored, and our two neighbors had 3 dogs between them and my son was always feeding and playing with them. We have since moved to an apartment and cannot have a dog. He misses spending time with the animals. I would always refer to him as the neighborhood "dog whisperer" because they really bonded with him, and he was always gentle and caring.

I am hoping to find a shelter that would permit me to volunteer with him (to supervise for safety, etc) and allow him some time with the animals. Tasks like walking dogs, or feeding the animals would be feasible for his age. Would this be something that your shelter is looking for? If so, please feel free to contact me. I am thinking of something like 1 or 2 times a week for an hour.

I work in the non-profit sector so I know that volunteering with children can be a legally complicated issue. I'd be glad to sign any waivers or whatever is necessary. And, as I stated, I will always be there to supervise and monitor so he will be on my watch the entire time.
The Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals AIDS Clinical Trials Unit is now enrolling women in a first of its kind clinical trial for Cleveland. The trial is looking at two different female-controlled methods to prevent or decrease the sexual transmission of HIV: microbicides, which are topical gels, foams or creams, and pre-exposure prophylaxis or PrEP, which involves taking antiretroviral medicines to prevent or decrease HIV infection. Because the trial is an earlier phase trial looking at the absorption, acceptability and adherence of the microbicide and PrEP drug, the site is not seeking women who are at high risk of infection.

The development of female-controlled HIV prevention methods is a research priority around the world, as the number of HIV-infected women continues to increase dramatically. Of the estimated 33.2 million people infected with HIV globally, 15.4 million are women.

The trial is enrolling healthy, sexually active, HIV-uninfected women age 18-45.
