<![CDATA[Are you learning a foreign language? Please don't spend any money until you have a clear idea of where you're going. I'm a translator / interpreter and sometimes a teacher/tutor. I read, write, and speak Spanish, French, Dutch, German and Portuguese. I have a few ideas & hints to offer you: a) Spanish lessons on tape and CD (available for free at the public library) can work for you, but only if you apply yourself at least an hour every day, repeating OUT LOUD the words and phrases from the CD. b) Watch the news/weather, first in English, then in Spanish, and TAPE the Spanish news and weather while the captions (closed captioning for the hearing impaired) are visible on-screen. Since you know more or less what news they are talking about, and if you tape it and play it back later, you'll be amazed at how many words you start catching, in spite of how fast they talk. You will have to pause it as needed, and rewind it a little bit, many times. c) you will need to know the rules of grammar, spelling and syntax of YOUR OWN LANGUAGE before you can be successful at learning a foreign language. For example, you will need to know what nouns, verbs, adjectives adverbs, and articles are. You should know that plurals in English are not formed with apostrophes except in a very few foreign words. Thus, the plurals of IDEA and TUTOR are ideas and tutors, NOT "idea's and tutor's." d) Make friends with an immigrant from Central America or Mexico who speaks VERY little English. You can help each other, if he/she is motivated to learn some English. e) Don't sign up for classes or lessons if you know your lack of time or lack of motivation will lead you to drop out, stop going, or stop actively participating. Why waste your money? f) You can rent movies for free from the public library, with subtitles are in Spanish for an English language film, or in English for a Spanish-language movie. g) We are all totally immersed in English, 16 to 18 hours a day with our TV, radio, newspaper, and our daily interactions. To what extent can you immerse yourself in Spanish language, and avoid the barrage of English? Get books, CDS, pamphlets magazines, newspapers and software in SPANISH. h) take a professional translator/interpreter out for lunch or dinner in a quiet cafe or restaurant. Bring your Spanish books, and pick his brains over wine or beer. Ask him all the difficult questions and the bits you got stuck on. Combine learning with pleasure. Don't be shy about speaking what little Spanish/French you might already know. Learning can be fun.
