COMIRB # 04-0940
<br>
We are currently recruiting Caucasian and Hispanic children (average age 8-13 years old) for a research study to look at the effect of a single exercise session on how the body handles a breakfast meal.
<br>
<br>
Screening assessments will include:
<br>
• a health and physical examination
<br>
• 2 blood draws; 2 hours between each blood draw
<br>
<br>
If you qualify to continue to participate in the study, based on the screening results, you will then complete the following tests over a 2 week period:
<br>
• measurement of your muscle and body fat content by DEXA
<br>
• ride a stationary bicycle 20-30 minutes with breath sampling
<br>
• measurement of how much energy your body uses when you are resting
<br>
<br>
You will then participate in the main part of the study. This requires you to do two test days separated by about 3-4 weeks. For three days before EACH of these test days, we will provide you with all your food and we will ask you not to play any sports or be very active. The night before each test day you will stay overnight in the Clinical Translational Research Center at The Children’s Hospital. Each of the test days will include the following.
<br>
• On one day, moderate bicycle exercise for 30 minutes and on the other day, 30 minutes of resting.
<br>
• Drawing of several blood samples from a small tube placed in a forearm vein,
<br>
• Breath sampling via a mouthpiece or plastic hood
<br>
<br>
Each test day will last approximately 7hrs, and you will be asked to collect your urine while you are in the hospital.

<br>
<br>
Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008
<br>

<br>
Sloans Lake (25th & Sheridan)
<br>
<br>
We need your help to put on a fun, fund-raising event for the Rocky Mountain Masonry Foundation. The Run Around the Block 5K will be at Sloan’s Lake on Sunday, Sept. 7. This USATF certified course will require a crew to setup and run the event. We have crew positions for people who like to get up early, people who want to volunteer and run the race, and for people who prefer to wander in later and finish up the job.
<br>
<br>
7:30 a.m. Set-up Crew: Your job would be to set up the race course - this involves putting up signs, setting out traffic cones, marking hazards, and unloading vehicles. We need one crew head and about a dozen workers. This is a good job if you want to run the race as well!
<br>
<br>
8: 30 a.m. Water station Crew: Your job would be to set up the water station, hand water to the runners and pick up the cups they throw on the ground. It’s a fast paced job, you might get wet, and you will get a good view of the race from mile 1.5. We need one crew head and two or three workers.
<br>
<br>
8:30 a.m. Start/Finish Crew: Your job is to set up and man the chutes. At the start of the race you will be helping keep the runners & walkers in their respective areas and making sure every one gets off to a good race. A fast 20 minutes later you will be taking the bib tags from the runners as they start crossing the finish line. We need a crew head and about three workers. We also need a data entry guru to get the race times in the computer as fast as possible.
<br>
<br>
9 a.m. Course Marshalls: Your job is to direct traffic at specific points along the race route. You’ll be keeping the runners safe from bicyclists and dog-walkers, and making sure the runners don’t take a wrong turn. We need a crew head and about four workers.
<br>
<br>
11 a.m. Clean Up Crew: Runners are messy! Water bottles, race bibs, stuff from goodie bags, cups, and more will be strewn every where. Your job is to pick up the trash, take down the signs, pick up the traffic cones and get the park back in the condition it was when we arrived. We need a crew head and about a dozen people for this job. This is a good job to pick if you want to run the race!
<br>
<br>
We look forward to seeing you Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008 at 10 a.m. at Sloan’s Lake for the Run Around the Block 5K, awards ceremony and post-race expo.

The goal of this project is to protect the turtles and to help run the conservation activities of the protection turtle program promoting the international cooperation and international solidarity.
<br>
The main work consists in collecting turtle eggs, burying them again in a secure place, and transporting the baby turtles safely to the sea. This will be carried out mostly at night, together with the people from Colola Village. They are the people who will work with the group and explain what to do. For this camp we will need very motivated volunteers who really want to get involved with the work of protection of the turtle.
<br>
There are also some extra activities to do with the local people - to help improve the town like putting names of the streets, helping to arrange a multi-use playground and maybe some cleaning work.

The official language of the workcamp is English. Some Spanish would be appreciated.

It is our mission to “Make a difference in the lives of kids with cancer and their families…one day at a time.”
<br>
<br>
Brent's Place is currently in dire need of EVENT VOLUNTEERS for our ROADLESS RIDE. Roadless Ride is a series of 12, hour-long, stationary bike "spinning" classes at a local health club. In addition to great spin classes, there will be tasty food, sweet swag, a fancy silent auction, and wonderful company from our staff and families. All proceeds from this event directly funds our MY TIME program that enables families to take in Denver attractions during their stay with us.
<br>
<br>
Whatday say... you in?
<br>
<br>
Here are some details:
<br>
<br>
What: help us hand out t-shirts, register folks, monitor the silent auction, and motivate spinners for this worthy cause.
<br>
When: Friday, October 17, 2008
<br>
Where: Greenwood Athletic and Tennis Club. 5801 S. Quebec Street Greenwood Village, CO 80111 – there will be free parking for all volunteers.
<br>
What time: We have two ideal volunteer shifts, 5:15AM to 11AM & 11AM to 6PM.
<br>
We will also need help with clean up from 6PM-8PM.
<br>
How: Please return this email with three pieces of needed information:
<br>
<br>
1)Your age. We prefer that volunteers be at least 18 years of age. Volunteers aged 15-18 years of age can participate, but must be accompanied by an adult.
<br>
2)You’re preferred volunteer station and reporting time. We realize that volunteering so early, and during the week, is very difficult. Please do let us know if you are available for any portion of the above shift.
<br>
3)You’re preferred contact information. I will send volunteering updates and reminders via email prior to event day. A cell phone number is also useful, in the event that our anticipated needs change.
<br>
<br>
Thank you (in advance) for getting up early, and/or staying late, and enduring the traffic, and putting up with our overenthusiastic volunteer coordinator… all for our kids with cancer.

<br>
<br>
<br>
7:30 a.m. Set-up Crew: Your job would be to set up the race course - this involves putting up signs, setting out traffic cones, marking hazards, and unloading vehicles. We need one crew head and about a dozen workers. This is a good job if you want to run the race as well!
<br>
<br>
8: 30 a.m. Water station Crew: Your job would be to set up the water station, hand water to the runners and pick up the cups they throw on the ground. It’s a fast paced job, you might get wet, and you will get a good view of the race from mile 1.5. We need one crew head and two or three workers.
<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
9 a.m. Course Marshalls: Your job is to direct traffic at specific points along the race route. You’ll be keeping the runners safe from bicyclists and dog-walkers, and making sure the runners don’t take a wrong turn. We need a crew head and about four workers.
<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
We look forward to seeing you Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008 at 10 a.m. at Sloan’s Lake for the Run Around the Block 5K, awards ceremony and post-race expo.

This 100-page MS Word document has fantastic content but its format/layout is horrific. As a result, it is currently very ineffective as a useful learning tool.

<br>
The Gig - Get a big deposit in your kharma bank by helping us redesign this important paper-based MS Word document for our agency. The goal of this project is to take our current Volunteer Handbook and reformat it to create an intuitively laid-out and extremely readable document. It is likely that this layout project will involve:
<br>
<br>
- Re-ordering content to create more organized sections.
<br>
- Standardizing the page layout with fonts, formats, margins, etc to create a more appealing layout.
<br>
- Create a table of contents, index and 'chapter' format that allows for quick access to the information beign sought.
<br>
<br>
This is not a graphics project, as our 100 page document is almost exclusively text. Our goal is to have the document complete by January 2009. This job will be able to be conducted remotely and at your leisure.
<br>
<br>
The Process - This is a NON-PAID position. If you are in a position to volunteer for this project and have significant layout/editorial experience, please send a resume and samples of your work to layouteditor@bigcitymountaineers.org for consideration.

Everyone has their own standards for flagging, but here are mine for your consideration...<ol>
<li>I don't flag spayed or neutered animals. While they might be being sold, they cannot contribute to the pet overpopulation problem.<br>
<li>I don't flag FREE animals unless is it clearly a lie (large fee being charged offsite).<br>
<li>I don't flag dogs over six months old that cost less than $200 and have been vetted and/or fixed.<br>
<li>I don't flag vetted puppies that cost less than $150. If they don't say they are vetted, I must assume they are not. <br>
<li>Usually breeders way the dogs is registered with the American Kennel Club (the abbreviation!). As soon as that term is used, a red flag goes up and I look HARD at the ad.
<li>If there is no fee mentioned, but the animal is registered, I flag it. Breeders try to get around the sale rule that way.
<li>I don't flag mixed breeds unless the ad gives off a designer dog vibe...Puggle, Golden Doodle, doxie/chi....
<li>I believe the phrase "rehoming fee applies" is a way of hiding a high price for a dog.
<li>The phrase "parents on site" is another tip off that this is a breeder. For some reason, unknown to me, they think people will accept cold hearted breeding better if the stud and dam are on site!
<li> Do try to read the ad carefully! So many legit rescues and shelter ads are flagged off because the ad wasn't read carefully!

It is famous for its ruins belonging to the erstwhile medieval Hindu kingdom of Vijaynagar, now declared a World Heritage site. The temples of Hampi, its monolithic sculptures and monuments are breathtaking. The Hindu style of architecture found at Hampi speaks of the splendor of the Vijaynagar Empire.
<br>
The volunteer projects in Hampi will concentrate on the protection of the cultural heritage site and on creating awareness among the locals and the tourists. Trees and plants will be planted and grown, thereby converting dry areas into beautiful spots for an eye to rest on. This will include physical work and will require a lot of creativity and motivation from the volunteers to convey the message.

While many children living in orphanages have lost their parents, others were given up because their parents couldn't afford to care for them. You can make a difference by working directly with the children or by in a support capacity. Lets offer these children the chance for a better life by providing them with an education and better prospects for employment later in life. It doesn't matter if you choose to work with the children, develop programs, raise funds, or raise social awareness about the problem, you just need to care in order to make a difference.

<font face="Verdana" size="2"><b>Volunteer project: </b> Roi-Et is one of the provinces in the North East of Thailand, known between Thais as Isan. The Isan is also one of the regions of Thailand where traditions are preserved and respected; the Isan culture is influenced by Laos and Lao culture. This influence is represented in their special cooking, handicrafts, music and dance and on the typical Muay Thai Boxing. <br>The Bo Pan Khan site dates back to the bronze era, when it was a main economic centre of the region due to the rock salt that could be found in the soil. Nowadays, the site is virtually abandoned despite efforts of the Thai government in the 90-ies to attract local tourists. Bo Pan Khan is surrounded by water, which is now filled with riverweed. <br>Environmental and social is the main work of the project. The volunteers will work at Bo Pan Khan to help cutting the riverweed and cleaning around the area, and planting trees or flowers in the garden. The volunteers will also discover the typical Isan culture and traditions, visiting villagers, farmers and local artisans, helping them in their tasks occasionally. <br>Study theme: The volunteers will learn about the culture of rural Thailand in general and the traditions and specificity of the Isan region. Thai language lessons will also be given to the volunteers.<br>Project language: English<br><br>
Location: The Denrat sub-district area is about 8 km far from Nong Hi, 25 km far from Panomprai city and 95 km of Roi–Et city, in the Isan region, North east of Thailand.
