Every two years, a point-in-time-count survey is conducted to get accurate count of out how many individuals are currently living unsheltered. This year, IHS will be assisting the State in conducting a this survey and volunteers are needed to pass out food and toiletries to homeless individuals living in downtown Honolulu and Waianae. This event will be held on Saturday, January 24th - Thursday, January 29th during meal times at different homeless shelter locations. <![CDATA[My 23 Year old son is in desperate need for companionship, preferable a female, but a compassionate male friend could do. My son suffers from multiple things, main ones are his fear of going places/people, that increases his extreme anxiety, and his Central Auditory process that does not let him understand abstract thinking, like jokes, idioms, etc. Because he is NOT retarded, he can't qualify for Maui services, and he gets 3 hours A MONTH! from mental health services that usually is an old person w/no compassion (sadly to say)...so he is left alone, in a painful, desperate situation. He wants a girlfriend, I can't get him one so...a friend for now will do. He is a handsome young man, with a heart of gold that has been dealt a very painful life, and all he asks is for some human contact besides me, his mother. He lives w/me. He goes to our condo pool and jacuzzi, usually in the late evening/night, (only after I peek to make sure there's no people there, due to his anxiety), as he sleeps all day as his sleep schedule is opposite of ours...he loves to play Playstation and super Nintendo but only Street Fighter. Brother, that comes once/week, would take him off roading, and on trips in the Zodiac boat that we own. Lately he has been willing to go the beach, (a miracle), just to look at it, (the beach across our place), but he has nobody to go with...he won't go w/me...I am not 2 much fun 4 him. So... if anybody out there is compassionate, and can keep a promise if they say they are coming, or call to let us know that they can't come, so my son does not wait w/no call/no show, and wants to help a good, beautiful, sad soul, please e-mail me. <![CDATA[The Hawaii Animal Sanctuary... a haven for homeless, abused, abandoned and unwanted animals. HAS, located on Oahu, is a place where animals get a new lease on life. Every animal brought to us has a chance to live out its life in a caring environment. Evolving as an animal refuge since 1990, the one-acre sanctuary is now the home to several hundred cats, a number of dogs, rabbits and other creatures. No-kill and re-homing policies are practiced. All animals are spayed and neutered in an effort to prevent further pet overpopulation in Hawaii. HAS volunteers provide nourishment, accommodation, medical care and exercise, as well as loving attention to our animal family. Responsible animal ownership is promoted, and as many animals as possible are adopted to loving homes with the promise that the animals are returned to the sanctuary if the new owners are unable to care for them. HAS is a non-profit organization run entirely by volunteers. We depend on monetary donations to keep the sanctuary operating efficiently, as well as contributions of food, medicine, and numerous other supplies that ensure the animals= well being, happiness, and overall quality of life. We need volunteers to help with our educational projects: Bucket Gardens, Keiki Nature Classes and our part time preschool: Na Pualani Preschool. Regular duties include pulling and cutting weeds around the noni, mulching/fertilizing, and picking noni fruit. <![CDATA[We’re looking for volunteers to start Writing for Wellness classes. Ideally you would be able to commit to a two-year program of running classes that help people who are recovering from cancer or other medical conditions. Julie Davey, who is a two-time breast cancer survivor, started Writing for Wellness classes to give something back to the community that helped her heal (City of Hope in Los Angeles). Because it has been so helpful, we are expanding the program to other areas of the country. Writing for Wellness classes show people who have had cancer or other serious physical problems how to write about their journey of recovery. More than just journaling, the designated topic for each class helps the participants focus on a specific aspect of their situation. Classes deal with anger and sorrow, but they also deal with friendships and laughter, hope and giving back to others. If the two-year commitment is too much, we still would appreciate it if you would join us to hear Julie Davey discuss teaching the classes.
