Yes, Getting Things Done offers a complete system for downloading all those free-floating gotta-do's clogging your brain into a sophisticated framework of files and action listsall purportedly to free your mind to focus on whatever you're working on. However, it still operates from the decidedly Western notion that if we could just get really, really organized, we could turn ourselves into 24/7 productivity machines. (To wit, Allen, whom the New Economy bible Fast Company has dubbed "the personal productivity guru," suggests that instead of meditating on crouching tigers and hidden dragons while you wait for a plane, you should unsheathe that high-tech saber known as the cell phone and attack that list of calls you need to return.) As whole-life-organizing systems go, Allen's is pretty good, even fun and therapeutic. It starts with the exhortation to take every unaccounted-for scrap of paper in your workstation that you can't junk, The next step is to write down every unaccounted-for gotta-do cramming your head onto its own scrap of paper. Finally, throw the whole stew into a giant "in-basket" That's where the processing and prioritizing begin; in Allen's system, it get a little convoluted at times, rife as it is with fancy terms, subterms, and sub-subterms for even the simplest concepts. Thank goodness the spine of his system is captured on a straightforward, one-page flowchart that you can pin over your desk and repeatedly consult without having to refer back to the book. That alone is worth the purchase price. Also of value is Allen's ingenious Two-Minute Rule: if there's anything you absolutely must do that you can do right now in two minutes or less, then do it now, thus freeing up your time and mind tenfold over the long term. It's commonsense advice so obvious that most of us completely overlook it, much to our detriment; Allen excels at dispensing such wisdom in this useful, if somewhat belabored, self-improver aimed at everyone from CEOs to soccer moms (who we all know are more organized than most CEOs to start with). <![CDATA[Hi, here's a little story for you! Hope you enjoy it. (Information Please) When I was quite young, my father had one of the first phones in our neighborhood. I remember well the polished old case fastened to the wall. The shinny receiver hung on the side of the box. I was so little to reach the telephone, but I used to llisten with fasination when my mom used it. Then I discovered that somewhere inside that wonderful device lived an amazing person, name ("Information Please") and there was not a thing she didn't know. Information Please, could supply you with anyones number and the time , if you needed it. My first personal experience with this genie in box, came one day. While my mom was visting a neighbor. Amusing myself at the tool bench in the basement, I struck, my finger with the hammer! I was in pain....... I wanted, to yell or cry out loud, but no one was around to give any sympathy. Quikly, I thought! The phone! Running for the the foot stool, and climing up. I unhoched the receiver and held it to my hear. And spoke into the mouth piece, A voice said," Informatiom" Can I help you! Yes!, I hurt my finer with the hammer. with tears in my eye's. Now having anudience. The question came! Where is your mother? Nobodies home. Are you bleeding? No, but it hurts really bad! Ok! can you go to the ice box, and get a small piece of ice and hold it on your hurt finger. Ok! After doing so. I went back to phone, talk for awhile longer. The next day, I called information please, because I had to know where Philadelphgia was on the map of United States. This I had know for school.After that, she help me with my math. Then she told me she had a pet Chipmunk and what she feed him. It was nice. my days where full someone to talk too! This went on for sometime. Even when, I was growing into my teens. Slowly the conversations stop! But, the memories where still there in my mind. Soon I went to college, in settle where I had a sister living there. I called, her and spoke to her for awhile. Then with out thinking I called the operator in my hometown. And a small little voice said," Informatiom Please " I said, Could you help me spell (friend)! And I mean too tell you a long pause, came over the phone. And a cry! and laugh! Is this you, you silly little boy! "Yes" Sally, It's me. Isn't this wonderful. I haven't heard from you in age's tell me all that's been going on with you. After we caught up. She just told me, anytime you want just to talk. Just ask, for me. Ok! Sally You know sally I want to meet you someday and visted awhile if you don't mind. Just let me know! That was Miraculously, to think, she still there for me. About three months later, I was time to meet my friend "Sally". So, I call once angain, a different voice answered, and said. Informaion, can I help you. "Yes" may I speak to "Sally" please! I'm an old friend of hers. "Oh! I very very" Sorry to tell you, This, but Sally was getting sicker than normally, and started to work less and less. till finally she just stayed home. She passed away, last week! I'm so sorry to give you this informatiom. I thought you knew! " No" With a great pause! Hello! are you still there! "yes". Before, I hang up with you! Did you say your name is Paul? "Yes" it is!" Good," Sally left a messaga for you! Let me read it to you. She wanted you to know she didn't have any kids of her own. only pets! . And of her Godly friends! that where near to her. That she aways, look forward to your call's. So, she could tell, us and her friends about you, the son that I never had! But, only knew! Tell, him (I still say there are other words to sing in.....) Maybe but a little exercise on your part will make reaching your goals easier. "As I write this, tomorrow is Tuesday, which is a cardio day. I'll spend five minutes warming up on the VersaClimber, a towering machine that requires you to move your arms and legs simultaneously. Then I'll do 30 minutes on a stair mill. On Wednesday a personal trainer will work me like a farm animal for an hour, sometimes to the point that I am dizzy — an abuse for which I pay as much as I spend on groceries in a week. Thursday is "body wedge" class, which involves another exercise contraption, this one a large foam wedge from which I will push myself up in various hateful ways for an hour. Friday will bring a 5.5-mile run, the extra half-mile my grueling expiation of any gastronomical indulgences during the week." I have exercised like this — obsessively, a bit grimly — for years, but recently I began to wonder: Why am I doing this? One of the most widely accepted, commonly repeated assumptions in our culture is that if you exercise, you will lose weight. But I exercise all the time, I still have gut fat that hangs over my belt when I sit. Why isn't all the exercise wiping it out? "In general, for weight loss, exercise is pretty useless," says Eric Ravussin, chair in diabetes and metabolism at Louisiana State University and a prominent exercise researcher.
