This year we are looking for volunteer actors to play characters in a few of our historic homes. Candlelight Tour takes place on the evenings of December 12 and 13, 2008, and lasts for three hours with a small break for every volunteer. Food and drink will also be provided at the event for all volunteers. This is a unique opportunity for anyone interested in learning more about their city’s past to participate in an event that makes history an enjoyable experience for everyone. How Do I Join the Gay Men's Chorus of Houston? If you are interested in joining the Gay Men's Chorus of Houston you have come to the right place. Just follow these steps. 1. Attend an open rehearsal. 2. At the rehearsal, sign up at one of the tables in the lobby of Covenant Church. 3. After filing out the information about yourself, you will receive a welcome packet. You can also pick up music in the lobby. 4. Enjoy the rehearsal. How long is rehearsal? 5. Once rehearsal is over and you are confident that the chorus is for you, keep the music. If it isn't, then please return the music and let membership know you will not be returning. 6. Within the following week, you will be contacted to attend a voice placement session. What is voice placement? 7. After your voice placement, sit in your designated area. 8. The last thing we require is a payment of your membership dues. How much/What are membership dues? Open rehearsals for the Gay Men's Chorus: * Holiday Concert: September 8, 15, and 22, 2008. * Spring Concert: January 5, 12, and 19, 2009. * Summer Concert: March 30, April 6 and 13, 2009. Location of Rehearsals: Covenant Church 4949 Caroline St. Houston, TX 77004 Length of Rehearsals: Rehearsals are most Monday nights and run from 7 PM until 10 PM. If that sounds like it's a long time, it really isn't after we get to work. There is a 10 minute break about half-way through rehearsal. Occasionally, we may skip our break and end rehearsal 30 minutes early in order to enjoy some snacks and socialize. At least once per concert, we will hold a retreat rehearsal. Most are one-day long, but some are two-days long and take place out of town. During these lengthy rehearsals, we get through a lot of material, breaking for meals, snacks, and rest. What is Voice Placement? Are you a tenor, baritone, or bass? You may or may not have an answer to the question, but we can help you find out! Voice placement is a short session (about 5-15 minutes) where you and the conductor will run a few scales, arpeggios, and perhaps a familiar tune. The primary purpose is to see where your comfort zone is and place you appropriately within the chorus. There are four sections in our chorus: tenor 1, tenor 2, baritone, and bass. Each one of those sections is then divided into upper and lower (and the part you sing corresponds to this). Your designation is what the conductor feels is the best for you and the chorus. This is not an audition. It should be taken seriously, but there is no preparation involved, nor should you worried. Membership Dues Base membership dues of $50 per concert are required for every member. There may be additional fees for each concert contingent upon needs for each individual, including costumes, props, et cetera. If you cannot afford these dues, our BCPA scholarship program may be able to help for the investment of a few volunteer hours.
