EDUCATIONAL AND LEISURE ACTIVITIES FOR DISADVANTAGED CHILDREN IN A POOR FISHING VILLAGE

October 11 - October 22, 2010
November 8 - November 19, 2010
November 22 - December 3, 2010
December 13 - December 24, 2010
January 3 - January 14, 2011
January 17 - January 28, 2011

 This project has been running successfully since 2004. The Youth House School is a small education center for disadvantaged street children and children coming from a poor fishing village, located in the outskirts of Hanoi. The international volunteers will help run the school and will be responsible for keeping the school clean, cooking free lunch for the children, and teaching them basic things about their countries, health, etc. The volunteers will also organize some leisure activities for youth after school. This is a time for cultural exchange and embracing new relationships. The international volunteers will work together with a team of local volunteers, led by a group leader. The volunteers will teach around 15 children every day. Remember, the children are not used to rules and structure in their households, so volunteers must try to implement this by setting an example. The Youth House is also a place where young local people and international volunteers come to explore the cultural diversity, by teaching the children together or organizing leisure activities, such as taking the children to the swimming pool.
These activities are combined with projects to help disadvantaged people at the Fisher Village, who are very poor and live in slum-boats on the Red river. This is done by giving them food, medicines, water filters (for clean drinking water), toothpaste, second-hand warm clothes and free showers in winter, etc.
The Red River is the biggest river in Vietnam. The delta is located in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. The city continues to expand with many people coming from the countryside into the urban area. This however, is an expensive endeavor with the government imposing a tax on people coming from the rural area to prevent a massive influx of people. Some people decide however to come despite this financial situation and thus must live in house boats at the river to escape from having to pay. Since they do not technically live in Hanoi they must pay for school which is usually free until the age of 12. The entire family must work hours that most people would consider inhumane. The children wander the streets begging and collecting rubbish. An entire family barely makes $2 a day.

For more info and enrollment, please go to: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-vietnam.htm

To learn more about the international volunteer workcamps go to: www.cadip.org/workcamp.htm or give us a call:
 617-502-0400

 604-628-7400

Volunteer opportunities in other countries: www.cadip.org

Think of the qualities of a great city - fun, space, clean air, nature, culture - and Reykjavik has them in spades. It has the features of a modern, forward-looking society which are complemented by a close connection to beautiful nature. The population of the Reykjavik Capital Area is about 200,000. Reykjavik is spread across a peninsula with a panoramic view of the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean on almost all sides.
In this time of the year when conditions are favorable you can see the Northern lights (Aurora borealis) glowing curtain of greenish yellow lights, dancing in the distance to a spectacular, multi-colored fusion stretching across the sky.
The world’s northernmost capital is framed by the majestic Mt. Esja, which keeps a watchful eye on the city, and the blue waters of Faxafloi Bay. On a sunny day, the mystical Snaefellsjokull glacier appears crystal-like on the western horizon, while mountainous moonscapes spread to the southeast.
The international volunteers will visit kindergartens in Reykjavik and introduce different cultures to the kids. One of the tasks of this workcamp is to prepare games, songs and materials for those visits and we kindly ask the participants to bring materials that we can use for the preparation.
Volunteers are needed to learn & share the Buddha's teachings on the eightfold path with others.
These teachings lead to the end of ignorance & suffering.

The Four Noble truths

The First Noble Truth is that old age, illness, and death are all forms of human suffering, and that there are many other other ways in which people suffer. The Buddha accepted the Vedic idea of endlessly successive reincarnations where life followed upon life, with much suffering inevitably attending in each of these lives. The idea of Karma further sugesting that in each existence a person's good or bad deeds would respectively impact positively or negatively on their store of "merit". It was this Karma-merit that would underpin the advantageous, or pitiful, state into which individual reincarnations would occur.

The Second Noble Truth is that suffering is closely linked to desire, a desire for being which leads from birth to death and involve ageing, illness, and mortality. There are also various desires for pleasures and for powers which, frustratingly, may not be realised.

The Third Noble Truth is that suffering can be dispelled by the abandonment of all inappropriate desires.

The last of the Four Noble Truths holds that such abandonment of desires can be achieved by following the Noble Eightfold Path

The Noble Eightfold Path
The eightfold path to the cessation of suffering:

1. Right Understanding of the following facts:
* the truth about suffering ... (The Four Truths);
* everything is impermanent and changes;
* there is no separate individual self- this is an illusion. (We are one!)

2. Right Determination to:
* give up what is wrong and evil;
* undertake what is good;
* abandon thoughts that have to do with bringing suffering to any conscious being; cultivate thoughts that are of loving kindness, that are based on caring for others' suffering, and sympathetic joy in others' happiness.

3. Right Speech:
* Abstain from telling lies.
* Abstain from talk that brings harm or discredit to others (such as backbiting or slander) or talk that creates hatred or disharmony between individuals and groups.
* Abstain from harsh, rude, impolite, malicious, or abusive language.
* Abstain from idle, useless, and foolish babble and gossip. Abstain from recrimination and negative statements.
* Abstain from harsh speech—practice kindly speech.
* Abstain from frivolous speech—practice meaningful speech.
* Abstain from slanderous speech—practice harmonious speech.
* Speak the truth if it is useful and timely. Practice only necessary speech. Let your speech be filled with loving kindness. Speak that which alleviates suffering.

4. Right Action:
* Peaceful, honorable conduct; abstain from dishonest dealings; take concrete steps necessary to foster what is good.
* Do things that are moral, honest, and alleviate suffering. Do not do things that will bring suffering to others or yourself.

5. Right Livelihood:
* Abstain from making your living from an occupation that brings harm and suffering to humans or animals, or diminish their well being. This includes: activities that directly harm conscious beings, and activities that indirectly harm sentient beings, e.g., making weapons or poisons.

6. Right Effort:
* Foster good and prevent evil;
* Work on yourself—be engaged in appropriate self-improvement. The essence of right effort is that everything must be done with a sense of proper balance that fits the situation. Effort should be properly balanced between trying too hard and not trying hard enough. For example, strike the balance between excessive fasting and over-indulgence in food. Trying hard to progress too rapidly gets poor results, as does not trying hard enough.

7. Right Mindfulness or wakefulness:
* Foster right attention.
* Avoid whatever clouds our mental awareness (e.g., overeating, drugs, ).
* Systematically and intentionally develop awareness.

8. Right Concentration:
* Developed by practicing meditation and/or mental focusing. Proper meditation must be done continuously while awake, and should include work on awareness of body, emotions, thought, and mind objects.

http://www.lucidcafe.com/library/96jun/buddha2.html

Restoration of the World Heritage Site at Hampi and raising awareness among local children

 November 1 - November 14, 2010
The volunteer project takes place in Hampi, as it is popularly known today was the medieval capital of the Hindu empire Vijayanagara (the City of Victory). Hampi is situated in Karnataka state of India and is listed as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Hampi is charismatic even in its ruined state. It attracts thousands of tourists and pilgrims every year. Vast stretches of boulder-strewn hills make the backdrop of Hampi unique. Dotted around the hills and valleys are over 500 monuments. Among them are beautiful temples, basement of palaces, remains of aquatic structures, ancient market streets, royal pavilions, bastions, royal platforms, treasury buildings etc. Hampi is a backpacker’s paradise - every monument hides more than what they reveal.
The main objective of this project would be to spark interest among the local community by involving children and international volunteers in activities that promote sensitivity and respect towards the World Heritage site Hampi.
Founded in 1336, the site of Hampi, Karnataka, is located on the banks of the Tungabhadra River, in south India. In 1986, UNESCO inscribed the group of monuments at Hampi as a World Heritage site. More recently in 1999 Hampi was listed by UNESCO on the List of World Heritage sites in Danger prompted by the construction of two new suspension bridges and a new major road within the Core Protected Area which threaten the World Heritage site’s integrity. However in 2006 Hampi was removed from the List of World Heritage in Danger after addressing the World Heritage Centre’s (WHC) concerns. The recent threats are Urbanization & unplanned development; Environmental Threats; Lack of Cultural Resource Management.
The project would be to involve the local people to participate in restoration and maintaining the World Heritage site. The aim would be to raise awareness among the school children from in and around Hampi. The volunteers will organize different activities within the boundaries of World Heritage Site, at the same time involving the local school children. The project activities will be:
- Clean up activities around Virupaksha temple and Hampi Bazar, which is most visited by tourists and Pilgrims.
- Planting trees and looking after them around the pilgrimage area. Since Hampi is very barren and there are traces that in the past it had been much greener. It would be a good activity to address this change and involve the local children to plant trees and teach them to look after them till they can survive.
- Organizing Drawing competition for the school children and opening it up to local people by setting up an open gallery. Invite/Involve local Authorities, Guide Assosiation, teachers, and any other potential local partners. This would help build partnership for later work.
- The international volunteers will also continue with the restoration work of a temple that has been unearthed with the help of volunteers in the last two years.
Volunteers should be 18 years old and over

For more details and to see other projects in India please visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-india.htm

For volunteer opportunities in other countries: www.cadip.org, t. 617-502-0400 (USA); 604-628-7400

The project aims to ensure the reproduction of the turtles and preservation of the species for the future. There are two species of turtles arriving to this area: the Negra (Black Turtle) and the Golfina (Olive Riddle Turtle). The people involved in the project will help by collecting eggs, burying them in the turtle camp, taking care of the baby turtles and collecting some statistical data.
The goal of this project is to protect the turtles and to help run preservation activities focused on protecting endangered species, at the same time promoting international cooperation and international solidarity.
The main work consists in collecting turtle eggs, burying them again in a secure place, and getting the baby turtles back safely to the sea. This must be carried out at night since the turtles do not go out of the ocean during the day (because of their natural predators, it is safer for the turtles get out of the ocean in the dark). In collaboration with local indigenous people from Colola, the volunteers will seek for the turtles and take care of the eggs and the baby turtles. Locals are very friendly and working with them is very pleasant as they explain to the group what to do.
We need very motivated volunteers who really want to get involved in the work for protection of the turtles and are willing to interact with the local people and their culture.
There are also some extra activities to be done with the local people in order to help improve the town such as setting names to the streets or helping to arrange a multi-purpose playground for the children, and maybe some cleaning tasks, but this depends on the volunteers' initiative. The local people are very open to participate in other activities and the volunteers can also propose their own initiatives, so your ideas are welcome.
The official language of the project is English. Some Spanish would be appreciated.
Location: Colola is a small town located on the Michoacan State coast, between Maruata and La Placita towns. It's a remote place that offers an excellent opportunity to be close to nature, on a virgin beach, with no tourism around. The closest city is Tecoman at 200 kilometers, but other villages such as La Placita that are closer (45 minutes by bus) can offer Internet connection.

For more details, please visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-mexico.htm or give us a call: 617-502-0400 (US); 604-628-7400 (Canada)

This project is part of CADIP's International Volunteer Program: www.cadip.org/workcamps.htm

General rules and conditions for participation on our workcamp projects: www.cadip.org
