Since 1996 this project have been organized together with the Michoacan University and an organization called Ecotonia. This year the volunteers will work with the people of the village to protect the sea turtle, by collecting eggs, burying them in the turtle camp, taking care of the baby turtles and doing some work collecting statistical information about the turtles.
In this frame a group of international volunteers will be involved in the project, as members of the staff, which means that the volunteers will be very involved in the project and the work.

The goal of this project is to protect the turtles and to help run the conservation activities of the protection turtle program promoting the international cooperation and international solidarity.
The main work consists in collecting turtle eggs, burying them again in a secure place, and transporting the baby turtles safely to the sea. This will be carried out mostly at night, together with the people from Colola Village. They are the people who will work with the group and explain what to do. For this camp we will need very motivated volunteers who really want to get involved with the work of protection of the turtle.
There are also some extra activities to do with the local people - to help improve the town like putting names of the streets, helping to arrange a multi-use playground and maybe some cleaning work.

The official language of the workcamp is English. Some Spanish would be appreciated.

Spend the afternoon in the woods working with high school and middle school students. Volunteers will help the students identify, document, and remove invasive species. Volunteers should wear closed toed shoes, bring gloves, and wear bug spray, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Lunch and water will be provided. The students really enjoy working in the woods and documenting and understanding their progress. The students will spend the first half of their day identifying and removing invasives and the second half replanting native species. The high school students will be mentoring middle school students. They are asked to identify three invasives: Ligustrum, Privit, and Chinese Tallow. Once identified, they use a piece of twine to measure the circumference of the stump, record their information, and then they are to cut the invasive down. The invasives will be marked by orange construction spray paint, all the students have to do is identify the species. Volunteers do not have to stay the entire time but, we do request a 3 hour commitment.

If you are looking for a way to help the many people (especially those that can least afford the losses they sustained) who were victims of the devastating Hurricane IKE, I hope you will consider channeling that help through the Second Mile Mission Center. We opened our doors only a few hours after the hurricane had completed its destruction in our area, and those doors have been open virtually from daylight to dark since that time, as our staff and volunteers have been working long hours to help people in desperate need. Where we normally see 15 to 20 families a day, we have had over 200 families on several days since the storm. Last week we helped over 4100 individuals in 1025 families, and they continue to come in as word spreads that we are a source of help. No one has been turned away without receiving help in the form of food, water, furniture, and/or clothing, all distributed with individual counseling and a hug where appropriate, to show that someone really cares about them.

The Rainforest is disappearing at an alarming rate so you should see it while pristine areas exist. Better yet, do something to reforest land that has been clear cut or work with one of many groups that fight every day to protect existing forest. You can help from your home by raising money and awareness of the issue, or you can strap on your backpack and head south to work on the front lines.

This international volunteer project aims to
improve the quality of life of Peruan children, teenagers and women. The
project works in rural areas and rural communities, developing a set of
strategies and actions to reduce the indexes of exclusion and to help in
the solution of family problems such as violence against children and
lack of education. It is a program that works on many levels from
theoretical to practical activities. One of the places where this
program works is the orphanage URPI at the City of Ayacucho, Peru.
In the frame of the project a group of international volunteers is
invited again to participate in activities with children and Peruan
families.
Volunteers will work every day with around 80 children of Ayacucho.
Volunteers should be 18 years old and over
