I've answered a few ads on CL, but haven't really received any legitimate responses. I'm not looking to volunteer my body for medical experiments, such as the ads for birth control or weight lose - thank you, but no thank you. I'm active duty Navy, and have always had a strong urge to volunteer. I volunteered as an emergency room receptionist - mainly letting people know what department to go to or where their family members might be. I also volunteered as a Candy Striper and had loads of fun with patients of all ages. I've volunteered within the community picking up trash, helping build a school (while deployed to Japan), and a few other smaller events. I love it. Now that I'm active duty military, it's harder for me to put volunteering into a 'schedule'. If you have any events coming up that needs volunteers, please let me know! As I stated, as long as it's not scheduled office work, I'm pretty much able to do it, and I'm not afraid to get dirty. ^-^ Thank you, and have a great day! | Hi! Just one reason you're so awesome is because you logged onto craigslist and spent your TIME looking at volunteer opportuntites. The second reason you're awesome is because you clicked on THIS VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY!!! I'm Julie Castine (The Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator for The Arc Jacksonville)... I’m writing because The Arc has a three Volunteer opportunities that we’d love to have filled by fun, talented, family-friendly musicians (and we have a TON of other volunteer jobs that are in EVERY cateogry- gardening, photography, at our nightclub, construction work etc- just email me- lol). I’ve posted these priority musician requests on Craigslist before, emailed them to budding musicians and high school bands. Unfortunately no one has responded yet... so we're really depending on YOU!! The show must go on!!!

The Arc serves adults over the age of 18 with developmental disabilities, such as autism and down’s syndrome- and our people absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE music and dancing! They are some of the best “fans” a music group could want, but due to transportation issues and being on a fixed income rarely get to enjoy LIVE music! Most of the adults that we serve grew up in the “old days” of institutional life, and have never experienced one-on-one friendship, love, fun, compassion. It touches my heart so deeply to see how moved they are by simple acts of kindness. Last week I met “Michael” who grew up in an institution without parents, friends or loved ones, and now attends Club Arc regularly. He proudly showed me his birthday card, I smiled and said “that’s nice” and started to walk away… until I noticed the date on the upper right corner- September 2nd 2002. That was last birthday card he received (from a Best Buddies Volunteer). He was SO HAPPY to have it that he carries it around with him every day! Connecting Good-hearted people with someone from an often-forgotten part of our community (even if only long enough to write a card, sing a few songs or do an activity) means the world to them, provides a reason to laugh and smile, and creates a memory that lasts forever. Please help me spread the word about these three volunteer opportunities- Maybe someone else will have their own “Michael” story touch their heart!!

NAME: Group Home BBQ

WHEN: Any Weekend 1pm to approximately 3pm

TIME COMMITMENT: 2-3 hours

VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED: A small band or singer/guitar soloist

CROWD SIZE: 15-30 people

TYPE OF MUSIC: Classic Rock, Sign-Along, Original Songs

The Arc has five group homes that serve adults with developmental disabilities live there and they are cared for by a 24 hour rotating staff. As spring approaches, the group homes host BBQ's and many of them have invited their parents to visit. None of the group home residents drive, and although the staff provides the best care (and fun) possible for them- they don’t have friends who call just to say “hello” or get invited to the movies or dinner. On many occasions group home residents have very lonely and repetitive days, without excitement or something “new” to look forward to. So, the Saturday BBQ's are really big deal for them, everyone is anxiously looking forward to it! It would be an extra-special treat for them to see a LIVE musician (for many of them it would be their first opportunity!!) perform in a low-key backyard setting, and “show off” for their parents! The BBQ starts at 1pm and should wrap up around 3pm. Free food and drinks for the volunteers! The Arc also has some sound equipment that can be used (extension cords, 2 large loud stage speakers (Harbinger), a Behringer Xenyx 1002B mixer and a microphone) if needed.

NAME: CLUB ARC (Westside- 4401 Wesconnett Blvd, 32210)

WHEN: Every Friday Night, 5:30pm-9pm

TIME COMMITMENT: 3.5 hours

VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED: A small band or DJ (we have speakers, microphone, mixer)

CROWD SIZE: 50-150

Club Arc is a night club exclusively for adults with developmental disabilities. We’ve been open for about 4 months and the number of people who come keeps growing! We have a wonderful amateur DJ who volunteers his time mixing a playlist from the computer, but it would be a special surprise to offer a live band playing original music and/or classic hits! During the day the club space is used for a seniors program and every Friday night we convert it as closely as possible to a night club environment. Club Arc features a pool table, a café (virgin drinks and food), couches, a dance floor, separate DJ/band area, black lights, disco ball, revolving lights and a separate game room downstairs (with the Nintendo Wii, Karaoke and Bingo). Club Arc is one of the only options for Friday night entertainment to adults with disabilities and is run by one manager and about 10 volunteers. We are ALWAYS in great need of volunteers over the age of 18, who are outgoing, love loud music and to socialize with others. Please help us spread the word! Without volunteers the nightclub can’t stay open.

NAME: THE ARC JACKSONVILLE (Production Sites)

WHEN: Lunch Time (Downtown, Arlington or the Westside)

TIME COMMITMENT: 30 minutes to an hour

VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED: A soloist or duet

CROWD SIZE: 20-70

The Arc Jacksonville has three production and day-training facilities throughout Jacksonville. Level one individuals are able to use their skills and work in production environment on contracts (such as forming cardboard boxes for large companies, wrapping trial sized items and shredding documents). Level two participants are learning and improving their skills doing daily activities (such as exercise, arts-and-crafts, preparing easy meals, and developing communication skills). Level Three is also known as “medically fragile” and those individuals are generally confined to a wheelchair and are “non-verbal”. The Arc also have a seniors program, and a program for adults with mental illnesses. Although each of these groups are very different, one thing they have in common is their love for music! At our 3 production facilities, lunch is usually taken around 11:30am, and (any day of the week) we welcome a musician to come in and give a short performance in our cafeteria. This would not only be an awesome, fun and exciting surprise (as it would be for anyone at work!)- it will give them motivation for the rest of their day, allow them to see how an instrument is played, and show them that someone cares! The performance can be done during lunch for the entire group, or a small group (or one-on-one) demonstration can be done showing how (any) instrument works in a class-room setting between 9am and 1pm.

If anyone is interested in Volunteering, have questions or want a tour of our facility prior to committing to a date please contact me directly at Volunteer@arcjacksonville.org or by calling me (Julie) at (904) 207-4477. Although I’ve worked in the non-profit community for about 5 years, I’m new to working with adults with developmental disabilities- Volunteering with The Arc will not only be a blessing to others, but it will pierce your heart in a way you didn’t know was possible! Other benefits of Volunteering with us include; broadening your social network (with other volunteers), media attention through our newsletter, free day of fun, Facebook photo opportunities, chance to appear on our website, letter of appreciation, job letter of reference and referral, recording volunteer hours for work/school/military (military volunteer service medal), free Disney ticket (after 8 hours of service), free food and drinks (event specific), skills learned can be added to your resume, and most importantly… YOU WILL MAKE NEW MEMORIES FOR SOMEONE AND CHANGE THE TIME YOU SPEND WITH THEM CAN CHANGE THEIR ENTIRE LIFE!

| SafeRide America is a 501(c)3 nonprofit public service agency headquartered in Atlanta. The mission of SafeRide America is to proactively prevent all types of impaired driving and to provide assistance to children that have lost one or both parents in an impaired driving accident and to children that have been injured by an impaired driver.

We serve public safety by providing proactive transportation solutions to help eliminate the two most common excuses given by impaired drivers: money and having their car with them. To accomplish this goal we created SafeRide, a year round program dedicated to driving impaired individuals AND their cars for them. We prevent impaired driving tragedies before they happen.

Due to overwhelming demand from the Jacksonville area, SafeRide America is planning to expand our coverage to serve Jacksonville's citizens by opening a local chapter during 2010. We are seeking local volunteers to help us succeed in expanding to the area. Your help may result in helping save the life of someone you love.

We need your help with FUN-raising. The proceeds raised in the Jacksonville area will be set aside in a fund created to start SafeRide Jacksonville operations. Community service hours will be awarded. We have created an awareness program to encourage responsible driving in Jacksonville- by using magnets on cars as message boards, we can reduce the number of impaired driving accidents by reminding everyone to drive safely. Our cause magnets are ribbon-shaped and the size is about 8 by 3 inches, with the message 'Never Drive Impaired'.

We welcome everyone's help, however, if you are serving community service hours, your assignment would be simple: talk to everyone you know to remind them to never drive impaired as well as about the opportunity for SafeRide to start operations in the Jacksonville area. We call it FUN-raising because it really can be fun! Ask for a small donation, as little as $5, to go toward funding local start-up costs in exchange for a cause magnet for them to display on their vehicle. We will send you a timesheet to keep track of your hours and we will provide a letter (at no cost to you) on our letterhead verifying your volunteer hours for whomever necessary. We are a 501(c)3 non profit and accepted by all courts and schools.

Please CLICK HERE to fill out a quick application and help us prevent impaired driving in Jacksonville. Further contact information will be provided and a SafeRide representative will contact you. Many of the families do not have Latrines..

I started working with Jun in Lagoa dos Cágados, Ouricuri and Serinha, Brazil. This community is 1 hour away from Quijingui city by bus. We live in Lagoa dos Cágados. It has a population of about 300 and the population is really young.

The people are so nice and kind. They always help each other. Ouricuri is as big as Lagoa dos Cágados, but the families are poorer. Serinha is smaller than these two communities and this is the poorest community between the three. There still is no water tank system. Each house stores the rainwater.

The first two weeks, we did interviews with the families. Through the interviews I knew and realized a lot of things. All of the family we interviewed have Bolsa Familia program, it means the family has less than the lowest income. Most of the families we talked to do not have latrines, even though some of them have a TV. Many children have repeated their grades and generally they stop going to school when they are 18 years old, even though they haven’t finish their study. Even the parents don’t care a lot about their children’s study, more than half of the parents are analphabet. So, here, the children go to school to get the Bolsa Familia program.

I think the biggest problem is the employment. Here most of the people work on the farm, but, especially in the dry season, there is not enough employment for all of them. In general, the person can earn only R$100. It’s really difficult to support a big family with this small salary.

After the interviews, we planted fruit trees. Actually, it is difficult to grow them, because of the dry season. We told the families it would be better making some shadow and some stuff to prevent the animals from eating them. Now the plants are growing little by little. And we also started to have 5 English classes per week and we made activities with the children.
We started building latrines. We will make 10 latrines in these 3 communities. To make the latrines, at first, we had to make a hole of 1 meter and then we prepared the cover which is made of cement. This week we’ve just finished making 6 holes of 1 meter.

That is the mission of God Cares We Care. Forgotten inmates are matched with a follower of Jesus Christ who becomes a Pen Friend to them. The send "Paper Sunshine" (letters) to them, building a friendship over time. For some inmates, they haven't had a visit or letter in ten years, or more! When they hear their name called for mail, they're so shocked and overjoyed, that they break down and cry.

YES, IT'S SAFE! Every letter goes through our post office box, so your address isn't seen by the prisoner. Plus, we read EVERY inmate letter to make certain that they're following our guidelines for writing to a free person. We have Pen Friends in 14 states, and inmates in 12 states.
ATTENTION, MEN! We have five female believers writing for each male believer that writes. We need men to step up and be matched with male inmates. Will you answer God's call?

Send your name and mailing address, you'll receive our newsletter, statement of faith, plus the name, address, and a letter of introduction from the inmate that God's chosen just for YOU! Lord bless you richly for your compassion!
