Internet marketing is filled with “gurus” and “experts.” People who can help you “make a quick profit” with “tricks and shortcuts.” If you consider yourself one, then best of luck to you. We wish you every success.
On the other hand, if you’re always learning. If you’re dedicated to testing and searching and finding and studying until you identify a principled approach to doing things right….keep reading.
MarketingSherpa is a research firm specializing in tracking what works in all aspects of marketing (and what does not.) Our reporters offer Practical Case Studies and Know-How to 115,000 marketers who subscribe to our free email newsletters as well as paid members of our website.
We don’t simply reuse content. Or let the same people who write the same topic on every other website regurgitate all over our subscribers. This is real reporting. So to excel at this position, you must be able to do two things:

Research
As you can see, we write about facts, not fluff. Here’s a few things to keep in mind…
• Experience managing a beat, including planning an editorial calendar, researching industry trends, developing industry relationships, assessing potential topics for articles, etc. is crucial. Experience dancing to a beat is helpful, too. Hey, we all like to have fun sometimes.
• Do you have a deep knowledge of topics like email marketing, landing page optimization, ecommerce, search marketing, direct mail, online advertising, B2B marketing, social media, and analytics and testing? That would be helpful, after all, it’s what you’ll be researching and writing about. Of course, perhaps this job is your chance to learn.
• There’s death, there’s taxes, and there’s making deadlines. You might be able to cheat death or hire a good tax attorney, but there is no missing a deadline. Ever.
• We have a remote editorial structure. If you live near our Jacksonville Beach, Florida offices, that’s great. We’re a few blocks from the beach. You can go there for lunch. However, you’re free to live wherever you want. San Francisco. Boston. Botswana. So you must be a self-starter who can dig for information on your own. We’re here to help. But it’s ultimately up to you.
Present information

If your cover letter is as engaging as a traditional filibuster, don’t bother sending it. We’re not writing for Global Manufacturing Professionals or Systems Integrators. We write for the world’s leading marketers. The type of people who “Think Different” on their way to work in “The Ultimate Driving Machine,” “Behold the power of cheese” at lunch, and then, when the deadline looms, they “Just do it.” Because…they created these campaigns.

So if you can write up a detailed case study, good for you, that’s an important skill. But if you can make a case study sing like Pavarotti at Lincoln Center, keep reading. And keep these things in mind as well…
• Do you have experience writing in a new media environment? On paid membership websites? Writing email newsletters? Blogging? 2.0ing it up? That’d be cool. However, if we can get an ink smudge from every word you’ve ever written, and it was Woodward, Bernstein, and you…we want to hear from you as well.
• The best laid schemes of mice and men go oft awry. The best laid plans of MarketingSherpa reporters, including defining strategy and selecting speakers, turn into respected industry conferences.
• Are you a good public speaker? We’ll give some bonus points for that. We always need expert speakers to represent us during webinars, in-person events, and training session. But we don’t say no to JD Salinger, either.
• Do you have a Journalism, English, Communications, Advertising, or Marketing degree? That would be helpful. A summa cum laude graduate of the School of Hard Knocks? That could work too.
• Blogs. Twitter. LinkedIn. Foursquare. Kablooble. If you know which of those names is made up, that’s helpful. If you have experience and familiarity with these social media channels, that is even better.

Please excuse us if this seems a little too passionate. But I’m just guessing that the marketer who gazed at a chunk of cheddar and saw “Behold the power of cheese” was a pretty passionate person as well. And our job is to help marketers do their jobs better. They look to us.

So you see, kind of like Clark Kent and his alter ego, our biggest goal is to make things (in this case an industry) better. If you’re the same kind of person, and feel like this job posting was written specifically to you, maybe we’re your Daily Planet. So you in? If so…

In the end, all the above is (as they say in the job posting racket) “strongly preferred.” If you really want the job, impress us. Show us you have the ability to gain and disseminate knowledge. Entice us with writing so valuable and engaging that we’ve just got to pay you to come in every day and write some more because we want to see what you’ll write next. Send what you’ve got to www.marketingexperiments.com/careers.html.com.

| I work for an environmental consulting firm, and I'm looking for a freelancer to write/edit highly technical project descriptions for use in marketing materials. The writer may also need to interview engineers and scientists to elicit project details and verify content accuracy. I'll coordinate closely with the writer and ease them into that process. I expect to find someone who prefers telecommuting, but we can discuss working on site. I'd definitely like some level of face-to-face interaction.

The successful candidate will be paid hourly as a contract employee ($18-22, depending on experience). I estimate five to 10 hrs/wk, depending on our workload and the writer's availability. I'm not sure how long it will take to update our materials (months?), but this could easily develop into a long-term relationship with other types of writing projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

1) Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, PR or a related field.

2) At least five years experience writing/editing technical content.

3) Some experience with civil/environmental engineering or a related technical discipline. Being a "quick learner" is probably not enough. I need someone with exposure to my industry's jargon.

4) Reasonable availability during business hours. Don't apply if you have a full-time, 8am-5pm job.

5) Flexibility to work on various project types with no minimum guarantee of weekly hours. Some projects will probably keep you occupied up to 10 hrs/wk for several weeks. Other weeks will be slower.

6) You'll need to be set up for telecommuting (i.e., have a decent PC with high-speed internet and Word 2007).

Preferred Qualifications:

1) Graduate degree or certificate related to technical communications.

2) Experience preparing project descriptions, resumes, proposals, collateral and other marketing materials for an engineering firm (preferably civil/environmental).

Your Response:

Please email a detailed resume/C.V. or similar qualifications package. Craft your response to the criteria above. Please confirm that you meet the minimum requirements. Include the most relevant samples you have. I'll probably read them for about 15 seconds before deciding whether or not they go in the “viable leads” pile, so send your best stuff. Samples must demonstrate your ability to articulate technical content, preferably from a marketing perspective. They should be clear, concise, compelling and grammatically flawless. Please show that you understand the difference between project features and client benefits.

If you don't have directly relevant experience but really want this job, then pull a project description off some environmental firm's website and show me your rock star editing skills. Find a project that involves remediation, landfill engineering, stormwater modeling or something similar. Feel free to add fictitious details in brackets, as if to say, "This is what I would have tracked down if I could have contacted the project manager for details." Send me a link to the original, so I can compare.

I’ll do my best to respond to all applicants, but I can’t guarantee anything. If you’re a strong candidate, I’ll contact you within two weeks.
