<![CDATA[I am a violin maker. Well not exactly. I buy unvarnished violins with their back removed. They are very good quality and not expensive. Then I try various things with the back and the top. Here is what I have tried so far. Area tuning – I divide both the back and the top up into areas and mark them with a pencil from the inside. Then I adjust tap tone of the area at the bottom of the lower bout in the back to E4. I can show you how to do this. When you remove wood, this lowers the tone. I raise the pitch by adding an aqueous solution of potassium silicate. I have plenty of this and can show you how to do it. You add a little at a time until the pitch is right. If you add too much, you remove a little bit of wood to bring the pitch down. We call this pitch the fundamental. The other areas are turned to an overtone of the fundamental. Examples are a major third, a fifth, a minor seventh, an octave, a super fifth, and a super octave. Great violins have been tested and they show this pattern. You do a similar thing with the top and back but using slightly different fundamental pitches and areas. All of the carving and chemical application is done from the inside for the sake of appearance. Once the violin is properly tuned, it is glued together and varnished. The varnish is applied using three different layers – each with different ingredients. The base layer is applied to bring out the flame in the wood. The second layer is used to fill the pores of the wood. The third layer, which can be divided into sub layers, is the actual varnish. I like the initial layer to be yellow and then subsequent layers can be colors of your choice. Sanding the top layer allows the yellow to show through for a beautiful antique look. Again I have all of the materials. Controlled blind tests have shown that violins treated with fungus that lives on wood improves the tone to the point where experts cannot tell the difference from that of a Stradivarius and some like it better. Stradivarius got his wood that happened to be floating in a lake and the wet environment encouraged the growth of this fungus. I am growing a culture of this fungus. I am experimenting with various ways of applying it. The wood needs to be wet for the fungus to grow and the trick is to do it without warping the wood. Area turning and fungus treatment can be combined. I am looking for one or more partners to work with me in this endeavor. It is a labor of love. I don't want your money and I trust that you don't want mine. I have weak hands and it is difficult for me to use finger planes and other tools to remove wood.
