<![CDATA[Wouldn’t you prefer to keep your money rather than to just give it to the oil companies? I would, and you can….too many ways we don’t! And why? If you can’t or aren’t finding at least one way here to make up the gas increase, something is wrong….. → Great kids busy project to keep a copy in your car. Have them highlight or check off, look at after three days. Then go OMG! → Trucks, cars, semis that are parked overnight should be off, and not idling at roadside rests and truckstops. One of our states actually NOW has made this illegal……interesting….what would happen if 15 other of the decent weather year round states followed suit? → Taxis. Taxis. Taxis. In major cities, that we have at least 15 (NYC, Las Vegas, LA, Phoenix, Miami, DC, Indy, Houston, Chicago, to begin the list) Why do they idle when there is no fare? This is horrid, at tourist destinations like Vegas. Two years ago, when I was there, every hotel on the strip had 8+ autos, sitting idling – drivers out chatting/pacing. And at airports? We have at least 50 of those airports. I know that as you do, because there are 50 state capitals. Why aren’t cab companies coming down on drivers for this? Money out the door! Weather permitting rentacops, security guards, seems to me would be in higher efficiency of patrol a) on foot b) on bike c) on golf cart d) on ATV than in a car. Why? Those vehicles get in places a car can’t. Plus, the extra perks are they are cheaper to license, insure, repair, and fuel. Yet, we give rentacops cars—where do you see most of them? Sitting, idling right smack in front of the store; or just cruising the parking lot. And armored trucks really annoy me. 1) They park anywhere they want and block all kinds of a) entrances b) handicap parking, c) access to parking lots. I have never see a group of people that driving is part of their job; w/ no road skills. Then they sit there and idle??? If it’s a robbery issue-they carry guns. Many times money is in safety locked situations anyway. And any idiot trying to get in, first has to get UP, as these are NOT small autos you can JUST climb in. Have you ever seen a UPS/FedEx truck idle during a delivery? I never have. Maybe they have figured out that it costs. And the last I knew their target delivery stop time was 45 seconds. So, if it matters for 45 seconds.. Plus there’s the stolen vehicle issue. My dream would make it legal to move any idling auto, just to teach a lesson. I watched a rural mail carrier the other day, deliver to a row of about 50/60 boxes, inch by inch creeping along in HIS car. It took more than 30 minutes, and I wondered—why not park at one end and walk it? Wouldn’t it even be faster and cheaper? Well, I definitely know cheaper. Have you ever rented a car? Why do the clerks, pull the car around, show you features, measure gas level, inspect for damages, ALL THE WHILE leaving the car on? I risk pissing them off (and it does, imagine that) reach in and turn the key off; and generally make a matter of fact comment like “Save my gas, dude.” I’VE HAD TIMES this takes 10 minutes, why idle wasting gas? → Places that service autos, ie insurance co, dealers, parts warehouse, etc. should keep a copy on their counters. Don’t take spouse/kids/friends anywhere to drop off like mall, library, grocery, store, etc then sit in the parking lot, car on. Don’t circle the lot, Park. Waiting @ the bus stop on kids? Turn the car off. If you do this 5 times (we know it’s 10) times a week for even 2 minutes a pop – you wasted gas for 20 minutes ONE WEEK. Reality is about an hour a week. You could leave copies at pump….altho email also, it’s faster & always there. Turn car off when at funeral procession, rural mail delivery that gets out of car, loading/unloading. →Buy local .. everything you can meat market, produce, bakery, saves fuel bringing things to you. The only people who should not are shut ins. We utilize ship to me, it is not a convenience anymore. IT’S killing us at the gas pump. Read labels, buy American. Best example: White Rain Shampoo/Condition made in USA….VO5 made in Canada …you pay freight to truck it here, & sent your purchase dollar out of country. And raised gas prices. →Merge driving, look for city bus up ahead; don’t get stuck behind it, even worse (I saw this) 4 cars stuck in 4 lane intersection-light changed; rush hour traffic…noone in all four directions could move because of those four cars! behind the bus for two light changes. The backup was about than 200 cars. Wow. → It is legal to go LEFT on RED, from a 1way street to another 1way street with traffic that you merge LEFT into. Mostly downtown areas. Go right on red all the time, don’t hold up traffic. → A gas hose, is just like a straw – it achieves it’s own level. Think about that the next time you have a drink. Should I fill up or get few gallons at a time? Before/after I pump my gas, what happens? I estimate I get 10 gallons each year free, just by knowing this! Lighten remove anything unnecessary from your car. → Look at prices across the country especially if your planning road trips. Report incorrect pumps to department of weights and measures. Easy way to test a pump, run one gallon, Is it reading the posted price? Limit teen drivers cruising. If they go every Friday, make it every other Friday. Don’t mow lawn if you have grazing animals, let ‘em eat the grass down, and if they go thru your lawn, neighbors?? Choose alternate transportation with less or no fuel – especially for short trips. Even make it your goal say IF it’s 4 blocks, you’ll always avoid driving it. And make it a goal to do this once a week for normal driving use. → Use net for cheaper fuel–don’t then go there get in line and idle wasting 1/8 tank to get ¾. Read and learn about CAFÉ standards… do you know cars only conform to standards from 1980’s! yet technology has exceeded? Why? Good reads: A Declaration of Energy Independence by Jay Hakes; Energy Victory by Robert Zubrin. Did you see the new GM Chevy Volt? 232 MPG! Or the Nissan Leaf? Shouldn’t all cars be made this way? Why aren’t we demanding it? → School buses shut off AT school delivery AM & pickup PM, while loading/unloading. Cheaper and safer. → Don’t litter. Your litter creates two additional vehicles on the road to clean up. They need fuel to get there, that if you were not littering would not be happening, every drop drives up the cost and demand. It may not sound like it belongs here, but it does. The litter that is on the highway’s is picked up two ways, either employees or volunteers DRIVE out there and bag up, leave at roadside then trash crew comes behind and cleans bags. Trash cans are literally everywhere. Gas stations, stores, malls, your house, parks, etc….throw it in a trash can at your next stop. Guess who pays for that fuel? You do, in taxes. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. → If going out for lunch, ask coworkers if they want anything -eliminates multiple trips. One stop shopping. Combine all trips is good, combine all trips with neighbors, friends, relatives is better, and look for stores like Home Depot and Wally World that ad match. → Are you aware some cars are now being made if there is a 3 second stop, the engine is designed to shut down? Why not all cars? And if they’re making cars this way – that are smarter than us; hmmm… what are we doing wrong? What does that tell you? Why haven’t you sent the auto mfr an email telling them? After all they just got bailed out with YOUR money. → Only buy fuel if you need it not just because it dropped a cent or two. If it’s dropping, more than likely in 2/3 more days it will be cheaper. Consume all you have, gas does gum up. Maintain your car in good working order, oil change, tires, fluids, etc etc. →Monitor when you are idling, every person's needs are different. And so are driving situations. → Recycle or skip the plastic bags at the stores, they are made from oil. It takes about 37 million barrels per year! Use cloth or canvas. Reuse all you can. FYI-July 4th weekend, I got told by a Wally World cashier that the goal is by 2012, they are going to be charging for those plastic bags, make the switch now! → Construction & OTR trucks that idle, don’t. I watched a dozer cut and load a side dump truck at site. Took over 30 minutes (I know that because that’s how long it took me to walk past) 30 minutes. The dump truck ran the whole time, with no driver!!!! WHY? And cut warm up times! If you do ½ hour do 15 minutes. Treat work vehicle the same, don’t take the approach, I’m not paying for the gas so who cares? Oh but you are. You pay with higher prices at pump, on your electric, AND that’s your next raise your wasting. If waiting on a pace car @ construction zones or stopped in zones, turn car off. They have those flaggers for a reason, why idle? Your not getting thru faster even if you ram the car in front of you! Then your really not. → Use You can also save at home, because where does your electricity come from? Many sources, coal, oil, hydro, water, wind, solar…. get the CFC bulbs- you can buy them cheaper at dollar stores. Unplug EVERYTHING except stove/fridge/water heater, and plug them in as you go. Relying on a power strip really isn’t that much cheaper, and only helps when you forget. Your cell phone doesn’t need to charge overnight, usually 1-3 hours will do. If you did the math, on overcharging the cell phones we have; well with 30 million cell phones..….you’d find we are paying to waste a LOT of electricity. When using oven, use ALL the space, make extra meals, desserts, cakes, etc. but fill it up. If your freezer is empty store ½ full 2 liter water bottles in it, keeps fridge running better. → Drive the lights to avoid brake slow down stopped traffic. Let other drivers out in traffic, keeps them going & not just sitting there idling. Pull forward at pumps avoids others having driving around, and not just at pumps-anywhere. They even post this on the pumps. Do you realize when you stop to drop off you MAKE all cars behind you stop also? Park. Look before you start the car anywhere, if your in a parking lot & cars & people are behind you, c’mon you know you’re not going it clears, why idle? →Special events/venues/Concerts/plays/ fairs….take bus to just to save, if you drive – don’t sit in lot before or after with car on listening to radio/waiting AND after take your time 1) leaving the site just to get to your car and 2) in lot wait for traffic to clear. Or partying in your car idling – at least turn it off. → Stuck for a train? Turn the car off. Your stuck 5/10 minutes anyway. Skip drive thru’s of any kind…fast food, bank, ATM, pharmacy, even !funeral homes! , etc…park and walk it..consider it exercise, it gets you out of the 4/5/6 deep car idling line. At the ATM -takes about 3-5 minutes- why is car on? Use the walkup ATM. →What’s the value of a toll road? To go 80-90MPH? –do you need to get there faster? Will 15 minutes make that much difference? ONLY, when you crash on toll road, and then ..to get an EMS to you. →Forward this to your email contacts, make a bigger impact, use copy and paste; links expire. Will it make a difference? YES. But I do know this for sure, doing absolutely nothing will make NO difference at all. ]]>
