PRESERVING THE CULTURE OF THE HILL TRIBES IN NORTHERN THAILAND

  November 9 - November 22, 2009
December 14 - December 27, 2009
January 11 - January 24, 2010
February 8 - February 21, 2010
March 8 - March 21, 2010
April 12 - April 25, 2010
May 10 - May 23, 2010

Volunteer project: The Akhas are part of the Golden Triangle hill-tribe cultures. Like in the neighbouring countries where they also live, they face in Thailand strong difficulties to be recognised and to value their particularities. The AFECT organisation contributes since 1981 to the defense of their rights, youth empowerment, elders support and cultural preservation and study. The volunteers will learn about their culture and problematic situation and contribute to AFECT projects and the daily life of the Akha villages.
The main objective of the project is cultural exchange between the volunteers and the local villagers but the participants of the project will also practically work in the communities doing different kinds of support and development works, like renovation of some community spaces or field works and farming with the villagers. The exact nature of the work will depend on the needs of the village at the time of the project.
Study theme: The volunteers will learn about the AFECT campaigns and discover the Akha culture, lifestyle, particularities and problematic situation in Thailand from the inside and from Akha people themselves. An introduction to Akha and Thai language is foreseen.
Special requirements: No special profile is required. Nature lovers, ethnology fans and human rights activists will be particularly interested in this project. Adaptability is required from the participants.
Age range: 18 and over
Project language: English
Leisure time: The free time will be organised according to the weather and the actuality of the communities but in general it will be essentially spent in the community. The volunteers will have the chance to learn about Akha cuisine, massage and specific handicraft. They might have the opportunity to attend traditional Akha ceremonies and events (like the principal Harvest celebration in March). If the weather permits it, trekking in the hills can also be foreseen.
New years Eve, according to the Thai Buddhist calendar takes place in April. The volunteers in the April group will have the great chance to attend the ceremonies and festivities in the village with the local population.
Accommodation: The volunteers will be hosted by the villagers in the communities where they will work. The conditions will be the same as for the Akhas themselves: very basic compared to urban Thailand, but very authentic. Do not expect occidental luxuries in any case.
Location: The project will be held in the Chiang Rai region (North-west Thailand) and the surrounding mountains all the way to the Golden Triangle borders, maybe one of the most beautiful locations in Thailand! The influence of the hill tribes and nearby Burma, Laos and China shapes the culture here.

For more details and enrollment, please visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-thailand.htm or give us a call: 604-628-7400

For volunteer opportunities in other countries: www.cadip.org

EXTRAS NEEDED FOR NATIONALLY DISTRIBUTED ANTI DRINKING AND DRIVING PSAs -

Many of you know that long-time Channel 5 Weatherman Dave Brown lost his daughter, granddaughter and unborn grandchild to a drunk driver a few years ago. His son-in-law, Greg Kuehl, was a photographer at Channel 5 at the time. Six months ago, the grandson of former Channel 5 producer/director Bryan Cottingham was badly injured while riding with a driver who was drunk. He was in a coma for a month and is still undergoing rehabilitation to regain his most basic functions.

Dave, Greg and Bryan have joined together to produce a series of anti drinking and driving public service announcements that will be distributed and aired nationally. They have assembled a pro bono crew of very talented Memphis professionals and have received donations of equipment and facilities as well as all props and locations needed for the shoots. The state and national offices of MADD are also on board and will be helping us with publicity and with national distribution. We are asking for your volunteer help so I want to assure you that no one involved in the project will receive payment of any sort.

We have everything else in place. Now we need lots of extras. The PSAs will be videotaped in Memphis on March 9th and 10th.

March 9, 2010 Memphis Funeral Home 3599 Poplar
We need extras for 2 scenes:
9:45am-1pm – 40 people for a funeral scene in the chapel. We need a variety of adults of any ages as well as 6-10 teenagers. Race is unimportant. Dress is proper funeral attire.

2pm – 6pm – We need 20 people for a “visitation” scene. Again, we need a variety of adults of any ages. No teens or children. Some or all of these people can be from the morning group or you can volunteer for one scene or the other. We are shooting 3 different versions of this scene and need more African-Americans from 2pm-3:30pm.

March 10, 2010 FedEx World Headquarters 3650 Hack Crossing - Building E-1
4pm – 8pm – We need 20-25 adults to be the audience in a night club scene. We will be shooting wide shots as well as close-ups and small groups of people laughing at a comic doing “drunk” jokes. This will be intercut with night scenes of a very bad wreck with emergency crews, fire and police trucks and ambulances.
Dress is casual but neat.

MADD’s National Director of Communications calls these spots, “the most compelling I have ever seen cross my desk.” Please join us as we make a difference in the fight against this very serious problem. Broadcast quality versions of the spots will be available online for download if you want a copy.

If you would like to be a part of our effort please e-mail Bryan Cottingham at Bryancott@yahoo.com. Include your name, age, a phone number and the times you are available. Our Talent Coordinator will get in touch with you with all arrangements. If you have any questions you can call Bryan Cottingham at (615) 337-7014.

Think of the qualities of a great city - fun, space, clean air, nature, culture - and Reykjavik has them in spades. Reykjavik offers both the features of a modern and innovative society and the marvelous traits of a unique natural landscape. The population of the Capital Area is about 200,000. It is spread across a peninsula offering a panoramic view of the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean from nearly every part of the city. In the summer, you can sit by the harbor at midnight and watch the sun dip slightly below the horizon before it makes its way up again.
All around the world photographers are participating in photo marathons. A photo marathon is a competition, where the photographers are given certain topics to interpret within a time limit. Any one with an interest in photography can take part - beginners and experienced photographers. The international volunteer team will help organizing this event. In Kisumu, there are many orphans who, without help, would have no future. Salem Orphanage is a home to about 130 orphans who lost their parents (usually to AIDS) and street children from the slums. There are primarily boys, due to the "preference" for girls as household labor help, and the difficulty for boys to stay at home if their mother marries someone other than their father.
