<![CDATA[Your training should ALWAYS be about SAVING TIME! GOOGLE SEARCH: COLGAN BRYAN GUITAR BASS TAB INSTRUCTION My name is Colgan Bryan and I have been teaching these amazing instruments (guitar and bass) for 32 years. Run my name and keywords through Google and you will see I am uniquely qualified to provide you with the following tips and insight to help you make better decisions regarding your training. It is my hope that you become aware of how you should take your decisions regarding your choice of teachers very seriously and not just assume all teachers are the same. After the tips, is an overview of a "behind-the-scenes" view of private teaching and what to expect. I take teaching very seriously not only as a teacher but also as someone who studied with numerous private teachers, many of whom were like heroes to me. They weren’t necessarily the more famous teachers either. I really hate to see people squander their time and effort needlessly while paying top dollar for lessons that should prevent this waste. ALWAYS AVOID THESE COMMON TRAPS: These tips are common sense recommendations that you will discover over the years, but it’s a lot better if you learn them now to avoid wasting time and money and from squandering opportunities. These “tricks of the trade” are actually very old, but they keep reappearing with different names and faces. Using these tips can help you to TRUST YOUR OWN JUDGMENT which might be the only thing you can rely on. • NEVER EVER ALLOW SOMEONE TO “ASSIGN” YOU A TEACHER OR AN OPENING WITHOUT INSISTING THAT YOU TO TALK DIRECTLY TO THE TEACHER YOURSELF! Some stores feel that they own the customer which is always a bad sign. The fact is, the store or school has NOTHING to do with YOUR progress and THEY are the only ones who benefit from your business relationship. Do NOT allow them to intrude into YOUR training or try to "own" you. Chemistry is something that only YOU can judge and a store cannot and should not prevent you from making that judgment. • ALWAYS AVOID “SIGN-UP FEES,” "REGISTRATION FEES." THESE ARE BIG RED FLAGS. These tactics have only one purpose; to "lock you in." They are hoping that you do not question the fact that YOU GET NOTHING FROM THESE NON-REFUNDABLE FEES. You will already be paying the store enough money since a huge chunk of each lesson will go rent INSTEAD OF EXPERIENCE. The sad part is this shameful tactic works. So many people are locking themselves in poor training because they don't want to “waste” the $20 or $30 they paid up front. The truth is, if you have paid one of those sign up fees, YOU HAVE ALREADY WASTED THAT MONEY and allowing it to lock you into poor training is only making it cost you more. I hear so many stories from students who were so surprised to see how that friendly teacher or store changed when giving notice only to endure manipulative comments criticizing their “seriousness” or “discipline” etc. for not committing to long term to lessons. • NEVER EVER SIGN UP FOR LESSONS FROM A PHONE "COLD CALL" SALESMAN. This should be an "oh-duh" but you will be surprised at how many people make that regretful mistake. Any legitimate teacher knows it is ALWAYS a mistake to allow a salesman to just call your house and sign you up for any kind of music lessons. Get their name and make sure that you avoid them if you do want lessons. Learning music should ALWAYS be YOUR decision NEVER a SALESMAN’S. • NEVER EVER CHOOSE A TEACHER OR STORE/SCHOOL BECAUSE IT IS CLOSE TO HOME OR THEY COME TO YOUR HOME. This is a perfect example of "a penny wise, a dollar poorer." The main reason you hire a teacher is to save time, not just hours or days but YEARS if they are experienced. Studying one month with an experienced instructor, even if you have to drive a distance to study with them, can save you more time than a year with an inexperienced teacher who shows up at your house or teaches in that nearby store. Experienced, qualified teachers NEVER teach in your home. • ALWAYS AVOID STORE/SCHOOLS BOASTING OF A LARGE STAFF OF TEACHERS EACH CHARGING THE EXACT SAME PRICE WHETHER THE TEACHER HAS BEEN TEACHING 30 YEARS OR 30 MINUTES. These “assembly line” policies reward inexperience and penalize experience so it is very obvious why these stores have to resort to tricks to lock you in. • WATCH OUT FOR STORES WHO TRY TO DISCOURAGE YOU FROM HAVING THEM SERVICE YOUR INSTRUMENT BY GOUGING YOU WITH HIGH PRICES FOR STANDARD REPAIRS. You are not paying that extra money for higher quality. You’re just bribing the store to take a salesman off the floor. Legitimate stores who want RETURN customers, never cut corners with servicing their customers with quality repairs and teaching. If they cut corners with one then they will cut corners with the other. • NEVER EVER SIGN UP FOR SCHOOLS THAT INSIST THAT YOU BUY THEIR OVERKILL EXPENSIVE GUITARS THAT PROFESSIONALS CAN’T EVEN AFFORD. THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM IN SOUTH FLORIDA!!! Learning is ALWAYS about the PLAYER and NEVER about the INSTRUMENT. The most dishonest schools try this tactic on parents practically implying that you would be neglecting your child's potential if you do not buy it and buy it now. THEY KNOW THIS IS A LIE AND YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT TOO. These places will also "cold-call" you to pressure you into lessons. This is a pet peeve of mine because I know so many people who have quit playing all together because of these places. • ALWAYS BE SUSPICIOUS OF TEACHERS WHO DO NOT LIST THEIR YEARS OF TEACHING EXPERIENCE, FRONT AND CENTER ON THEIR BIO AND WHETHER THOSE YEARS WERE FULL TIME. That number of years of proving themselves to their clients will tell you more than how many years of playing, what bands they have played in, education or their own personal influences combined. If they have only been playing 20 or 30 years, you can safely assume any claim they can teach you "everything," is an exaggeration. If they have only been teaching 10 years about 20 or 30 students then they are likely just beginning to understand how to teach and they shouldn't be charging more than $20 per hour. If they are teaching through a store or if they are dring to your house, they will charge up to $60 per hour with most of that money going to store rent or “travel.” If they avoid the question by saying they have been teaching a "long time" BIG RED FLAG! • ALWAYS AVOID teachers who mislead by omission, using only the word “experience” without indicating that they really just mean PLAYING experience NOT TEACHING experience. Some like to conceal how little experience they have by combining their teaching experience with other experience like number of years playing or even other subjects unrelated to guitar or bass lessons like golf lessons or swimming etc.. This is NEVER a good sign. • NEVER EVER HIRE A TEACHER WHO DISCOURAGES YOU FROM YOUR OWN CHOICE OF STYLES OF MUSIC. They might insist learning their style first will make your style easier. THIS MISTAKE CAN COST YOU YEARS!!! Private lessons are about YOUR goals. This is a very bad sign of someone who cannot adapt and probably shouldn't be teaching privately. A legitimate teacher is always HONEST with you about their limitations and their strengths. • ALWAYS AVOID “ENSEMBLE” OR “CLASS GUITAR” LESSONS WHO PROMISE RESULTS BY WATERING DOWN EVERYTHING TO THE SLOWEST STUDENT IN CLASS. Do the math and you will see this only benefits the teacher. You will just be charged the same amount while surrendering the main benefit of private lessons. You would be MUCH better off just purchasing a book and teaching yourself. • ALWAYS AVOID TEACHERS WHO TEACH PRIVATELY AS IF THEY ARE TEACHING A CLASS, insisting that everyone learn from the same book or follow the same “program,” exercises, songs, skills regardless of your own goals, strengths or weaknesses. Methods can be useful for some instruments but they are very limiting for versatile instruments like guitar, bass, keyboards and drums. They really just benefit lazy teachers, who do not want to make the IMPORTANT DECISIONS THAT ARE AT THE HEART OF QUALITY TRAINING. • ALWAYS AVOID GUITAR “GURUS” THAT SEE ALL, KNOW ALL AND EVEN MERCHANDISE THEIR OWN MAGIC, “INSTANT GUITAR” BOOK, METHOD, SYSTEM OR COURSE UNDER THE PREMISE THAT YOU CANNOT LEARN WITHOUT THEM. The truth is; YOU’RE the one that is going to be practicing and YOU’RE the one who will deserve the credit when you succeed, not your “Guru.” You can get better quality products for a lot less money in any music store but if you learn a local "guru's" method, you will likely have to start over to learn from other books or methods. • ALWAYS AVOID DOGMATIC TEACHERS WHO SEEM THREATENED IF YOU SUPPLEMENT YOUR TRAINING WITH INSTRUCTION AND TABLATURE BOOKS, DVDS, COMPUTER PROGRAMS AND RECORDINGS INSTEAD OF WELCOMING YOUR INITIATIVE AND WORKING THEM INTO YOUR PROGRAM. • WATCH OUT FOR TEACHERS WHO TREAT EVERY STUDENT LIKE A MUSIC MAJOR INSTEAD OF TAKING THE TIME TO DISCUSS WITH YOU YOUR GOALS AND YOUR NEEDS. This would be like a doctor or lawyer insisting you learn medicine or the legal system to treat a sore throat or handle a traffic ticket. While teachers financially benefit from this type of overkill it is very costly to you. • ALWAYS AVOID TEACHERS WHO PLACE A LOT OF DEMANDS AND REQUIREMENTS OF JUMPING THROUGH HOOPS FOR THE "HONOR" OF STUDYING WITH THEM IMPLYING THAT PEOPLE "ARE NOT REALLY SERIOUS" IF THEY DO NOT COMPLY. Your success will be the result of your own decisions and effort not because you have jumped through a lot of hoops. There so many time wasting exercises that "teach discipline" but they do not teach you music and a lot of teachers over prescribe them. • STAY FAR AWAY FROM EXPENSIVE WANNABE COURSES, SCHOOLS OR “BOOT CAMPS” THAT TALK IN EXAGGERATED HYPE PROMISING TO “GET YOU ROCKING.” These schools are known as "smoke and mirrors" schools that are actually just "ensemble" courses with a circus vibe; two worthless concepts that add up to one great big expensive, worthless concept. These are just music versions of “be a model” or “be a star” charm schools that assume that you have stars in your eyes. I am amazed that people still fall for these places. • STAY FAR FAR FAR AWAY FROM GUITAR “GURUS” WHO CLAIM THEY ARE GIVING YOU THEIR “SHORTCUTS” GIMMICKS AND SECRETS THAT “NO-ONE ELSE KNOWS.” FACT: Shortcuts are like credit cards; they feel good in the beginning and cost you for a long time. This might sound like an exaggeration but it is actually an understatement. I have many decades of experience teaching people how to “deprogram” bad habits these “shortcuts” have caused that are now blocking them from improving. Common, outdated shortcuts include the CAGED system and using catch phrases for memorizing the notes of the staff like "FACE" or "Every Good Boy Does Fine." Any system that has you thinking wrong notes first to find the right note is SLOWING YOU DOWN FOR A LONG TIME! • ALWAYS AVOID THE "IT WAS GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME" TEACHER WHO ASSUMES YOU WANT TO BE JUST LIKE THEM. It is not an automatic given that what was great for the teacher will automatically be good for you. Just because reading music or not reading music worked for them doesn't mean that you will benefit by following in their footsteps. It is much easier for a teacher like that to keep pulling you into THEIR comfort zone than it is for them to adapt to YOUR comfort zone BUT YOUR COMFORT ZONE IS WHAT MATTERS. • EVEN MUSIC TEACHERS CAN DO A LITTLE MATH. Teaching from home or driving to your house is not a guarantee of quality nor is a high prince. It doesn’t take very long for instructors to catch on that they can either work half as much or make twice as much if they just teach at home or deliver lessons to avoid paying the excessive studio rent. To them this is a huge raise. If they made $20 per hour in a store, they will charge you $50 per hour to come to your house. For them, it’s like getting paid and extra $30 without scheduling another student and you are paying $30 per hour not to drive somewhere but where is the quality? This is why ou will NEVER find a good teacher who drives to your home. They will charge you a lot extra for “travel costs” but they are really charging you for the students that they cannot schedule while traveling to your home.. Whether repairing cars, appliances or people, the fundamental step of diagnoses is crucial and yet most instructors neglect that step because they are not experienced enough or versatile enough to adapt to their clients' needs. That diagnosis is what you are paying for. DIFFERENT TEACHERS YOU MIGHT ENCOUNTER: Here are some unfortunate facts: Only a tiny percentage of “advanced” great players are capable of teaching and only a tiny percentage of them even want to. It gets even worse; store/schools mostly resort to hyping teachers from that high percentage of “advanced” players who THINK they can teach. To them teaching is a great gig to have until they become rock stars and when they quit to go on the road or to pursue their rock star dream, the stores think they can just plug in another renter to fill the studio. If you start over with another inexperienced teacher who has never taught, your price will NOT go down. Most private teachers fall into two categories: “street player” teachers and “pedagogy” teachers and there are two types of street players; self-taught and educated. Surprisingly, they all tend to make the fundamental mistake of assuming that learning is about the teacher when it is ALWAYS about the student. As a result they’re often looking in the wrong place for your solutions. The following is a summary of what to expect with each type of teacher if they have been teaching FULL-TIME less than 10 years and much longer if only part time. SELF TAUGHT STREET PLAYERS might play in a band and even have some great touring and professional playing credits. They operate under the “What works for me will work for you” assumption which is like saying if you graduate from the 5th grade you can teach 5th grade. Unfortunately, they become a wealth of bad habits by teaching their “shortcuts” and “secrets.” They tell you to “forget about reading music, just play by ear” because that’s the only thing they understand. You risk paying to learn their limitations. EDUCATED STREET PLAYERS might have training from private teachers, college and maybe even have majored in music or gone to the REAL Guitar Institute of Technology in California, Berkley, etc.,. They can very likely become your best option but it usually takes them many years of experience to stop assuming everyone wants to be a virtuoso, bogging everyone down with everything but the kitchen sink. They tend to struggle with diagnosis and over prescribe technical solutions to your training instead of musical solutions that are likely much more effective. You risk burning out needlessly with a lot of unnecessary busywork. PEDAGOGY TEACHERS might have a degree in music education and might claim to be “certified.” Unfortunately, “legit” pedagogy programs are extremely outdated and still look at guitar and bass as non-instruments. These programs tend to rely on presumptuous, mass training methods targeting class rooms because that’s where the money is. If you are like that tortoise from the Comcast commercial and you want someone to slow you down because you hate learning fast, find one of these teachers. Otherwise you would be better off teaching yourself out of a book. You risk paying them to slow down your progress even if they are experienced. While, over the years, I have been very fortunate to work for ethical, serious stores in southern California, I still advise you not to over-rate the credibility of a teacher just because they are in a store or “school.” There are many scams and greedy store/schools nationwide, who view teaching as nothing more than “real estate.” They can either be a large chain store or an individual setting up a “school” or “learning center.” I have to say I am very disappointed in many trends I see in south Florida that are justified by “the other stores do it.” They cannot find ANY experienced quality teachers who will agree to their high rent (sometimes as much as half the teacher’s fee) but they can still fill up their “studios” using inexperienced teachers with the store’s foot traffic. When the students give up or burn out, they just keep replacing them with more foot traffic. When the instructors quit, they will just go to local colleges to find inexperienced teachers who will fill their empty studio quickly and try to reassign the exiting instructors old students who feel locked in to the store. One unfortunate fact is that there are dozens more stores and “music schools” in any one county than there are qualified, experienced teachers in all of south Florida. As if that isn’t bad enough, storefronts that cannot attract experienced instructors become reliant on a lot of tactics and tricks to “lock you in” to their location. In this day and age of technology, and publishing you do are likely to make more progress on your own than with will paying top dollar for assembly line school/stores” who will probably never have a true quality instructor who is worth the price that you are paying the store. Read on and you will see how why. While you might assume that there can’t really be this much corruption and incompetence then I suggest doing your own math. If a “school/store” has only 10 teachers and they only teach 10 students and they charge $20 per hour rent then they are making $2000 PER WEEK which pays for more than the MONTHLY rent for the entire store. The fact is that the smaller “schools” boast of having about 30 teachers with 10 studios open as much as 10 hours per day, seven days a week and they charge each teacher as much as $30 per hour whether the student shows up or not. This isn’t even mentioning the overhyped chains of “schools” promising to “get you rocking.” You can see where there is a large incentive to “lock you in” and how easy it is for these “schools” to make excuses for lower quality and higher prices. That friendly store owner or teacher probably do not see themselves being greedy or corrupt; it’s just business and other stores are doing it too etc. My question to you is; DO YOU WANT YOUR INVESTMENT OF TIME AND MONEY TO BE APPLIED TO YOUR TRAINING WITH AN EXPERIENCED INSTRUCTOR OR THE “SCHOOL’S” REAL ESTATE? As long as you reward these store/schools by paying top dollar for lessons and they pay bottom dollar for the inexperienced teacher, they have a great incentive to provide low quality and little experience. THIS IS HOW YOUR LESSONS TURN INTO MORE OF A BAD REAL ESTATE TRANSACTION INSTEAD OF AN INVESTMENT TOWARD YOUR OWN GOALS. Each full-time instructor pays more rent for that tiny studio/closet than a 3 bedroom house. You have to ask yourself if that 5X5 room is more important than having an experienced teacher who can help you save years of your valuable time? Should you be paying top dollar for someone who can’t? Warning WATCH OUT FOR IMITATORS Since I have begun posting these tips, there has been a trend among schools and teachers accidentally expressing how defensive they are about having their scams exposed and their lack of experience. Some are trying to duplicate me with similar prices and similar ads but they cannot duplicate my quality no matter how much money they spend to look good. Others have taken anonymous personal shots at me without realizing that they are proving my point. Since they make their attacks anonymously, they obviously see themselves as one of the scammers that I speak of in my posts. Every bit of information I have provided is verifiable and I am more than happy to put my name on it because I hate to see these scams prevent people from learning and the wrong people profit from other peoples efforts. Fortunately, I have also had very supportive comments from more dedicated shop owners who applaud someone with my credibility bringing this awareness to the public. BTW There is only one way inexperienced teachers and schools can duplicate my quality; teach a few more decades, full-time while dedicated to their students and a couple more decades of music publishing and performing. Now if their idea of teaching is to have you buy a method book and walk you through it, then they will NEVER duplicate my quality. My view, backed by over ten years of math and science teaching/tutoring, is that students "learn" to dislike math because omnce they fall behind they tend to stay "behinder and behinder" becuase there are holes in the knowledge base that keeps them from doing well.
