<![CDATA[There are a number of different organizations that engage in “recording for the blind” here in South Florida. Our particular group of volunteers has been affiliated for many years with the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind, which provides us with a small room for recording purposes. The State of Florida Division of Blind Services Regional Library is requiring all such organizations to change over from analog recording to digital recording. In practical terms, that means that all our volunteers need to be computer-literate (Windows PC), and a number of our long-time volunteers have not been able to make that transition. We’re currently in dire need of new computer-literate volunteers. There are two types of volunteer activities: actual voice recording and administrative/editorial support. We have a desktop computer system set up at the Lighthouse for recording, and some our current volunteers are editing recordings on their own home computers (in order to keep the desktop unit more available for recording). <![CDATA[We have a unique effort to help connect families and our troops stationed in the middle east. We want to provide our troops access to business quality phones and video conferencing free of charge -- something that simply does not exist over there at the moment. Essentially we're setting up centers at US military bases where our service men and women can go to and call home whenever they like. No calling cards, no per minute fees and crystal clear quality. In addition we provide web cams and video conferencing services so the families here can see their loved ones. We succeeded in doing this for the first time in October of last year (2007) and it was a great success. We are trying to get another base online before the holidays and could use your help. We are looking for people that could make phone calls to various government organizations and help us select a base to bring online as well as coordinate with the military to see that we meet our deadline of being operational before Thanksgiving. You do not need to be familiar with communications technology, just have a drive to see this project through and the time to commit to it. We would also like to find a volunteer coordinator to head up this effort, so please contact us if you are interested. Here is a little more background on the project. We are a local satellite communications company. We provided all the communications support to Martin County during the hurricanes of 2004 and 2005 (Frances, Jean, and Wilma). During a natural disaster, when all land lines are typically down, the only communication systems that work are satellite based. However, these systems have always been incredibly expensive to operate and thus are out of reach for many applications. We sought to change this and through some innovation we have come up with a way to reduce these costs by more than a factor of 10. What would normally cost $100,000 to do, we can do for less than $10,000. The applications for this are nearly endless and now we have systems all over the globe providing critical communication for everything from construction sites to foreign embassies and even yachts. We realized another application that has greater impact that any of these endeavors however: our troops. Since we have reduced the costs by so much, we can very easily provide free communications to our troops. Currently access to phones is very limited at many military bases in the middle east and even when they can get access to one, it is very expensive. This is why there are so many efforts asking for people to donate phone cards to send to our troops. What we are doing does not require a phone card and there is no cost to the families, the troops, or the US government - we are paying for everything. Someone can simply pick up the phone and call home just as if they were here in the US. The only problem we have is while we are willing to donate all the equipment and satellite time, we do not have the resources to deal with the arduous task of working with the military to setup another base. This is very time consuming and with the economy the way it is these days we have to spend our time focusing on projects that generate revenue. Thus we are looking for people to help us with this part. We have done this once before so we are somewhat familiar with the process and can provide some guidance, but we are looking for someone to head up this non-profit effort and together we will bring another base online before the holidays. Believe me, there is nothing more rewarding than when we bring the link up for the first time and you're not only talking to someone stationed over there, but you can see them. The first time we did it, I was not prepared for how it would make me feel. To give you an idea, here are some of the letters we received: "Subject: Thank you!
