Seabury Grandin Quinn was born in 1889 in Washington D.C., where he grew up and attended law school at the National University (now part of George Washington University), graduating in 1910. After serving in the Army during World War I, Quinn moved to New York and began writing, editing and teaching in the field of medical jurisprudence, specializing in mortuary law. Clement Clarence Williams was born on February 21, 1881 in Bryant, IL. Williams received his Bachelor of Science in Natural Science at Southern Iowa Normal School and soon after began teaching high school science. In 1907, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois and then received ajob teaching at the University of Colorado. While holding this job, Williams worked during the summers at the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad Company in Chicago. In 1919, he was awarded the head of the University of Kansas Civil Engineering department. Two years later, Williams became a professor and department head at the University of Illinois. He transferred five years later to a position as Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Iowa. Finally, in 1935, Williams became the President of Lehigh University. This institution, unlike many others around the country, expanded its enrollment during the Second World War. Williams excelled in his position as president. Williams wrote several books on masonry structures and foundations throughout his lifetime. Clement Clarence Williams died on February 20, 1947, one day before his sixty-sixth birthday.

It's hard to believe that the Simpsons have been around for more than a decade. Today, The Simpsons is the longest–running animated series of all time (dethroning The Flintstones in February 1997), and an intrinsic part of pop culture.
The Simpsons Complete Guide to your Favourite Show is a celebration of this family's phenomenal decade. Arranged by season, the book covers each episode of the television show, with the special episodes (the annual Halloween show, "Who Shot Mr. Burns?" and "Krusty Gets Kancelled") receiving eyeball–busting two–page spreads. A synopsis follows. The buyer can stop by my house and pick the book up or pay an additional shipping fee.

Bruce and Stan's newest book encourages readers not to disregard the minor, insignificant things in life. Rather, "God Is in the Small Stuff..."encourages a better understanding of God's infinite character, reminding readers that He is a personal and intimate God, involved in every detail of their lives, however minute. "God Is In the Small Stuff...and it all matters" contains 40 chapters, with titles such as "Remember that God Loves You," "Discipline Yourself (No One Else Will)," and "Contentment Won't Kill You." Each chapter includes an introductory commentary in the tongue-in-cheek Bruce & Stan style, followed by bits of pithy and sometimes humorous wisdom.

| I am selling, in practically brand-new condition, a copy of the best-selling book, "A Reporter's Life: Walter Cronkite." The buyer can pick the book up at my house or have it shipped for an additional fee. A synopsis follows:

He has been called the most trusted man in America. His 60-year-long journalistic career has spanned the Great Depression, several wars, and the extraordinary changes that have engulfed our nation over the last two-thirds of the 20th century. When Walter Cronkite advised his television audience in 1968 that the war in Vietnam could not be won, President Lyndon B. Johnson said: "If I've lost Cronkite, I've lost middle America."

Now, at the age of eighty, Cronkite has written his life story--the personal and professional odyssey of the original "anchorman" for whom that very word was coined. As a witness to the crucial events of this century--first for the Houston Press, then for the United Press wire service, and finally for CBS in the fledgling medium of television--Cronkite set a standard for integrity, objectivity, enthusiasm, compassion, and insight that is difficult to surpass. He is an overflowing vessel of history, and a direct link with the people and places that have defined our nation and established its unique role in the world.

But Walter Cronkite is also the man who loved to drive race cars "for the same reason that others do exhibitionist, dangerous stunts. It sets us apart from the average man; puts us, in our own minds, on a level just a little above the chap who doesn't race." He is also the man whose "softheartedness knows no rational bounds" and who always had "great problems at the theater, tearing up at the slightest offense against animals and people, notably the very old or the very young." He is the man who could barely refrain from spitting on the defendants at the Nuremberg Trials, and who could barely announce President Kennedy's assassination over the air for the sobs in his throat.

Walter Cronkite helped launch the juggernaut of television, and tried to imbue it with his own respect for quality and ethics; but now he occupies a ringside seat during the decline of his profession and the ascent of the lowest common denominator. As he aptly observes, "They'd rewrite Exodus to include a car chase."

Still, the American people know the difference. They know that for decades they have had the privilege of getting their news from a gentleman of the highest caliber. And they will immensely enjoy A Reporter's Life. | I am selling, in practically brand-new condition, a copy of the book, "George Burns: 100 Years, 100 Stories."

It's not hard to see why George Burns is considered one of the greatest comedians in American history. In 100 Years, 100 Stories fans can get a glimpse of Burns's past in vaudeville, radio, film and the dawning age of television. This audiobook has laugh-out-loud storytelling expertly performed by John Byner. His impressions of Burns's cast of characters (such as W.C. Fields, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Groucho Marx) add tremendous flavor to Burns's already hysterical yarns. Also deeply touching are Milton Berle's musings about the comedian. The entire package is a grand testimony to the joy of humor that George Burns thrived on throughout his century of life. | This book is BRAND NEW and could make for an ideal gift. The Blue Day Book is a wonderful collection of amusing, poignant animal photos and inspirational text designed to lift the spirits of anyone who’s got the blues. No one who has lips will be able to read it without smiling; it’s guaranteed. The fact is, we all have our bad days -- they are an intrinsic part of being human. As prescribed by The Blue Day Book in its delightful photo and text messages, the solution is to see each incident in perspective, recognize that our feelings of failure and loss are not unique, and acknowledge the absurdities of our existence, and glory in the potential we all have. In less than one hundred sentences, The Blue Day Book conveys this message with great compassion and humor. Its vehicle is charming black-and-white photographs of animals that are strangely human and completely free of judgment or pretension. The humble marriage of easy text and beautiful images takes us through the entire evolution of a blue day -- examines what it feels like, what causes it, and how to get over it. | I am selling a gently-used copy of the book, "Amy Grant: The Life of a Pop Star," by author Bob Millard. The buyer can pick the book up at my house or pay an additional shipping fee to have it sent. The synopsis is below:

Amy Grant is a bona fide pop star with roots of gospel. As one of the biggest-selling recording artists in gospel music history, she's made the sectarian leap to mainstream "pop gospel" - but not without a fight. Grant has learned that success doesn't come easily, or directly. Despite the Grammys, numerous Dove awards, and the throngs of devoted fans, Grant has had to live with often conflicting loyalties to her career and her spiritual beliefs. As the most glorious symbol of the new Christian woman - tough, liberated, ready to admit her mistakes - Grant is not content to sugarcoat the trials of her life. She has knowingly planted her feet on two antagonistic grounds: secular and religious, commandeering her conflicted position head-on, with warmth and grace.

It's an age-old question that has stumped the great minds of history: What is the meaning of life? In his hilarious and uplifting style, best-selling author Bradley Trevor Greive finally provides the answer: Figure out what you love and do it.Illustrated with playful photographs of animals, BTG's insightful prose again hits his target straight on. He muses about why we're here and our greater purpose in the grand scheme of things. His informal style provides a refreshing counterpoint to what has always been one of life's big debates. For example, when it comes to discovering your passion, BTG writes, "First, no one else will tell you about it-it's just like walking around all day with a sign on your back that says KICK ME.The Meaning of Life is a witty, thought-provoking book that makes an ideal gift for anyone who's seeking their true purpose-and wants to laugh along the way. | Hey, TV fans. I have for sale a gently-used copy of the book, "The PBS Companion: A History of Public Television," by David Stewart. The buyer can pick the book up at my house or have it shipped for an additional fee. The synopsis is below:

"The PBS Companion: A History of Public Television" represents an informal history of public television in the United States. David Stewart recalls he beginning of some major public television programs, such as "Masterpiece Theater" and "Sesame Street," that transformed "educational TV" into "public TV" in 1967. Noncommercial television programming has survived a half-century of government and corporate influence, institutional rivalries, administrative ineptness, frequent bouts of banality, and grandstanding politicians. Except for the first chapter, Stewart devotes each chapter to a specific series, which will appeal to readers in terms of their particular interest in such programs. Consequently, what we have is not a seamless history of public television proceeding from one notable series to the next, but rather a series of chapters devoted to notable programming that are essentially created to stand alone but still continue the general sense of history.
The line up for "The PBS Companion": (1) The Shakespeare Experience is about Frank Baxter bringing Shakespeare to television and setting the bar for educational television on both commercial and noncommercial television; (2) "An Age of Kings" was public TV's first unqualified national success, presenting Shakespeare's history plays in fifteen parts from Richard II to Richard III; (3) "The Ragtime Era" was the most watched noncommercial series up to that time, while the music rights were held by NET; (4) KQED traces the significant impact on public television of the San Francisco station; (5) WETA and the Battle of the Spanish Armada tells of the shaky beginnings of another station; (6) The (Improbable) Beginning of "Masterpiece Theatre" tells of what is probably the signature series for PBS, which began as an attempt to follow-up on the success of "The Forsyte Saga"; (7) The "Upstairs, Downstairs" Years is about the keystone show on that signature series; (8) Revisiting "Brideshead Revisited" is self-explanatory, as is (9) "Mister Rogers in His Neighborhood," made more poignant by the recent passing of Fred Rogers; (10) How They Got to "Sesame Street" provides too brief a look at the most important and beloved PBS program; (11) Fred Wiseman: No Simple Solutions looks at the PBS career of the distinguished documentarian; (12) Julia Child-The French Chef says it all; (13) Talking with Jim Lehrer turns the tables on the distinguished newsman; (14) "Wall $treet Week"'s Louis Rukeyser: One for the Money" is more about the show than the host; (15) Inventing "NOVA" draws a nice contrast between what this show was doing to popularize science compared with the rest of television and even "TV Guide"; (16) "The American Experience" is the most recent PBS success story, although critics originally objected it was not going in chronological order, although I was surprised that the most successful program in PBS history, "The Civil War," is reduced to a sentence fragment; and (17) "Frontline" closes the book with the most adversarial program offered by PBS.

Holding that critics have been perhaps too kind to public television programming, assuming any faults could be ascribed to inadequate funding rather than creative ineptness, Stewart suggests the reverse is true; program executives find "Fawlty Towers" hilarious but never think of considering producing anything similar. Stewart also dismisses the idea that PBS goes out of its way to avoid appearing to be elite (I am reminded of Ethan asking his mother on an episode of "Thirtysomething" if there was television in heaven and she replied, "Yes, but only PBS"). Stewart concludes instead that "public television programs simply reflect the social, economic, and intellectual interests of those who are professionally associated with public broadcasting." Stewart challenges the idea that PBS only makes "safe" program production choices because "public TV can no longer afford to fail" by noting the risks that have been taken, often with great success, as with "The Great American Dream Machine," "An American Family," Mark Russell's political satire, and "The Civil War." Stewart is right in characterizing his effort as an informal history, which should neither preclude someone else form undertaking a more formal history of PBS or distract from this pleasant little look at some classic television programs.

Long ago dubbed the fourth branch of government, the American press remains to most of the general public an inscrutable enterprise whose influence and behavior are alternately welcomed and maligned; yet the proper functioning of a democracy depends upon a media-literate populace to act as the ultimate watchdog. With wit and authority, John Hamilton and George Krimsky lead readers through the whirl of print journalism. They offer a curiosity-satisfying blend of explanation and interpretation, history, anecdotes aplenty, and statistical analysis to show what's wrong and what works with today’s newspapers. | I have available a BRAND NEW copy of "We Interrupt This Broadcast," a gripping hardcover book by Joe Garner and forwarded by Walter Cronkite. The buyer can pick the book up at my house or pay an additional fee to have it shipped. A synopsis is below:

Beginning with the explosion of the dirigible Hindenburg in 1937, this book and double-CD collection of audio broadcasts recalls a series of dramatic events so urgent that they interrupted scheduled broadcasting in America. The text of this package includes capsule explanations of such events as the attack on Pearl Harbor and the death of Elvis, accompanied by dramatic black-and-white stock photos. Introduced by the sonorous voice of TV journalist Bill Kurtis, the recordings of the news broadcasts revive the panic and thrill of some of the defining moments (mostly American) of the 20th century. This updated second edition includes three new events: the impeachment of President Clinton, the tragic shootings at Columbine High School, and the death of John F. Kennedy Jr. in an airplane crash. New recordings from the assassination of Lee Harvey Oswald, the Apollo 13 mission, and the Munich Olympics tragedy have also been added.
We Interrupt This Broadcast offers, in some ways, a strange view of the past. News that interrupts broadcasts is always sensational and usually tragic. Of the 41 recordings, only five or so don't involve assassinations, explosions, death, or defeat. Furthermore, only the deaths of Marilyn Monroe and Princess Diana represent the female side of modern events. Nevertheless, these recordings will fascinate many listeners too young to have heard the original broadcasts, and those who were alive at the time might enjoy hearing them again in all their crackling, nostalgic glory.
