"Nashville is becoming a joke"?

Welcome to the 70's! | I’m a local 25-year-old drummer and have been playing for over 16 years. I have no issues with playing to clicks/loops and I’m comfortable playing just about any genre (I don’t play double bass, sorry metal guys). I’ve played hundreds of shows and toured with independent/signed acts all around the country since graduating college about 4 years ago. I also have experience tour managing bands. I’m currently looking for touring bands that need a drummer or those who need a merch guy/tour manager. I have solid gear with hard cases, a 5x8 trailer if needed and a desire to be involved with music full-time, as I’ve only been doing it part-time to this point. Some of my influences include Anberlin, Brand New, Death Cab for Cutie, Explosions in the Sky, Foo Fighters, MuteMath, Paper Route and Thrice. If you like these types of bands, I’ll probably appreciate your musical tastes and your songs. Even if you don’t listen to these types of bands, I’m still interested in hearing from anyone who is hard working and plays genuine original music. Please no cover bands or those who don’t travel regularly. Last, I’m not looking to make a fortune and don’t expect to be paid just for showing up. I just want to be able to cover my bills and do something I love.

Thank you! | Country has really became a joke. What i do not understand is how these wannabe country singers are moonlighting as karaoke DJs at night. Did your career suck that bad that you feel you need to talk smack about knoxville. I saw your name on your email there and looked you up and it honestly blew me away when I read your post and you said " but I know I am a REAL country singer and obviously Nashville and the powers that be have decided to turn the Capitol of Country Music into a joke. Churning out a bunch of garbage aimed at kids that buy Taylor Swift CD's" and then you went on to say Country Singers need to unite.. Are you serious.????? You act like you had a Platinum song out already and that your hot shit. My girlfriend saw your myspace page and remembers you from a karaoke bar. She said them pictures on your profile looks like you love that movie "Brokeback Mountain". and that you talk with a lisp
You do not represent us real non karaoke Country Singers so do not act like you represent country singers and on top of that from the sound of your songs on myspace no wonder why you do karaoke. I am fed up with fakes like you , you are country in front of your friends but your a karaoke spokesmodel at night.
On your post you stated to "Stay away from Next Star" I looked them up and thats a singing competition correct? If your such a great country singer why are you joining a competition?? I guess Next Star told you that you sucked so now your going to bash them huh? Let me call next star and see how your tryouts went. Karaoke not paying the bills ??? I see your email address on your post about "Nashville is not country music town" let me contact next star and see if you auditioned for a TALENT SHOW. boy your country credibility will be shot. REAL COUNTRY SINGERS DONT DO TALENT CONTEST.....let me do some home work on this poser steve

The bashing has appalled me to the point of actually posting something on here for once. With every bash, you guys make Nashville suck. I thought musicians were cool. You bashing musicians are definitely not cool, and I doubt you're a good hang, which may be why you have so much to bitch about. The musicians I hang out with are the ones that would wish Baltimore guy the best. They are also ones that have way more work than they can handle, because they're not dick's, and people like them. That's a huge part of what it takes in this town. Don't be a dick.

Everybody could use some luck in this town. I say good luck to the guy from Baltimore. After all, he knows what he wants and he has the balls to set out to do it. That in itself is already way more than can be said for many, many others in this town. | Lenny Round

While enjoying the response they received within this little town, Monkey Love decided to embrace a more ambitious goal, which resulted in their eleven-song debut. In 2001, Monkey Love released their first public offering entitled "Waiting to get off..." which is a creative display of funky grooves -Killin' Is Easy, Threat, silly lyrics -Serious, The Fair Song, and emotional angst-Didn't I, Know It All.

While other bands leaned towards a 'bubble-gum' pop-rock style, the BulletBoys had an undeniable groove and R&B vocal flair that won over fans and audiences around the world. Released in 1988, the self-titled BulletBoys debut received high praise with critical acclaim. Immediately, their first single 'Smooth Up In Ya' shot to the top of the music charts. Their next singles, 'Hard as a Rock' and a cover of the O'Jays song, 'For the Love Of Money' helped to skyrocket album sales and secure their place among rock's top artists. | Here is an original thought, dont post ANYTHING if there is the slightest chance your feeling are going to get hurt(funniest thing WHO cares what ANYONE on craigslist thinks....other than the guy from Baltimore...weak). Still haven't heard the guy sing or play just a couple of "I rock" photos and a crappy attitude. As far as the "Southern" thing, Most that CANT make every excuse in the book(this has always been my favorite). Play your music and rock the world.....but remember "thin-skinned" last about 2 years at the most........smell the roses and step over the shit. | To the guy from Baltimore:

For what it's worth, there are a lot of cynical, pissed off people in this town who are totally clueless. You obviously have a great grasp on how to play in a band and entertain an audience. Most people in this town get up and play what they want and no one cares. They have no idea what it means to entertain, which they also don't seem to realize is the most important thing, to the crowd, to the bar owner, and to anyone who works in the music business who might happen to stumble upon them. Being an entertainer and pleasing the crowd is the first most important thing. Most of the losers taking shots at you are pissed off and resentful towards Nashville because they have never learned what you already have. I thought your first post was actually really well done and it stood out to me as someone who actually gets the whole thing-that it is not just about self-gratification. If you want that, stay at home, don't go out and try to play bars and then get pissed cause no one likes you and music row won't have anything to do with you. These people obviously can't look at the charts and see that for the most part the best entertainers, not the most talented people, are at the top. Hats off to you and don't listen to all this southern fried bullshit people are aiming at you.
Good luck and bring it on-this town needs more people who actually get it!!

To everyone bashing this guy:

Don't you have anything better to do? Does it really bother you that much if someone from out of town comes in and tries to give it a shot. Aren't we pretty much all trying to do the same thing. We should all be for each other - not against. All musicians share a common bond, which should make us all be in this together. Just because you don't share the exact musical tastes or beliefs as another musician doesn't make you right and him wrong. This Craigslist bashing stuff going back and forth really just makes Craigslist less legit. Isn't it supposed to be something that is helpful and useful to all of us isn't it. I'm not in any way a Craigslist police and never have been, it just gets old having to rummage through all the BS to get to meaningful posts.

We have 11 finished instrumentals and are hoping to find a singer who writes lyrics as well. We will share publishing, and we will cover all studio time re tracking your vox. Even if you have another band, this is a great opportunity as a side project if you're looking to try something a little different out. We are NOT a touring act, but this project will be released via a label in the fall/winter. We even need a final band name, so this is really a cool little project to sink your teeth into if you like what you hear. Please reply with a myspace, etc link where we can hear your voice, and we'll shoot our link over! Hope everyone's having a great 2010!

I was on The Mark and Natalie show twice last week, on 95.5 New Country KWNR. It was awesome to meet Mark and Natalie. They have the best listeners on the planet. I was also on The Channel 5 and 8 News, The Rant with John Huck, and an article in The Review Journal. These were all here in Las Vegas. My CD is selling pretty well, and I am in the process of putting together a brand new Country band to perform here in Las Vegas to start.

| So I'm trying to get a band together. I'm going to try and avoid all the stupid craigslist cliches while I write this.

I like rock music. Plain and simple. Specifically, stuff like The Replacements, Gin Blossoms, Big Star, early Cheap Trick, The Knack, Soul Asylum, Ryan Adams/Whiskeytown, Springsteen, The Clash, Dinosaur Jr., The Hold Steady, Oasis, The Rolling Stones... I think you get the idea.

I write and sing, and play guitar. What I'm looking for is a group of people who are into the same things and pay no mind to the fact that we're in "Nashville, Music City USA." That's just fine for most people, but personally have no plans to throw on Wranglers and a cowboy hat and hit lower broad with this kind of music, because we'd get thrown out on our asses.

I go to school here in town, have lived here for two years, but I haven't gotten around to posting this until now. I mostly miss playing shows and having a good time, etc. If you don't think I sound like a total loser and would like to get in on this kind of thing, just send me an email. We can get together and have a beer and talk about music, etc.

So, in short. I'm looking for a guitar player, a bassist, and a drummer. 21 and up, preferably. Smoking and drinking is almost encouraged. If you like loud Rock N' Roll with a little alt-country and punk rock thrown in, I think we'd get along. | Good post Eric.

You're talking Nashville Tennessee correct?? LOL | Oh yes...I have done this! You pay a few bucks (cover charge) for the privilege of competing only to have some tonally challenged girl with a ton of BFFs win the prize. Your song could be earth moving but it won't make a bit of difference because music, talent, skill, and passion are not the point. Even knowing someone doesn't get you very far...I know some heavies/managers/producers who write crap and make it fly just to keep a death grip on the stash of cash! Can anyone say day job? Oh wait...the economy...SNAP! You'd better really love playing music with your children and performing for the people who care about everything else except the music in your life! | She has worked with greats like Fleetwood Mac, Sam Cooke, Faith Hill, VInce Gill, Robert Plant...I could go on and on....Bekka is in town for a few months and is available for studio work...Now is your chance to get this great american vocalist to do your project for a VERY competitive rate....She will add soul and uniqueness to your project! Peace! | All the talk about thousands of writers in Nashville...let's see if we can be surprised!!

Most of the songs that will surprise you are going to be under the control of a publishing company. Those companies are not just going to hand out their best songs to an unknown artist, without some major label affiliation. The publishers are in it to make money, and in the long run, it's better for them to hold the song for an artist they know will make them money. You'll have to convince them that they aren't wasting their time (or song). | TMR Productions wants to give every Singer, Songwriter, Band and anyone who wants to record the opportunity to make the best recordings possible.

Sorry but if those scenes are so smoking (Chicago/Boston/Baltimore(?laughable) then WHY THE FUCH are you in Nashville trying to do Heavy Metal? Wow Nashvegas never comes to mind with a Metal scene, be like going to Chicago to be a Country star and bitching the whole time about it. I think if you have to wear ROSE COLORED glasses to "survive" then thats ALL you are accomplishing. Live in your mind like half of every idiot that comes here, just keep saying how great you are over and over again and maybe someone will believe it. PLEASE MAKE SURE ALL SONGS ARE PROTECTED. If you DO NOT HAVE PUBLISHING, PLEASE MENTION WHEN SENDING!!!! We want you to get paid!! | Listen guys, clearly you do not have to have an old school "A" game to make it in Nashville. With the right Bloodline, spouses or friends, you can be downright awful and have a full fledged career! Won't name names but several "kids of" other famous people made debuts recently, all to stellar critical acclaim, and they all stink.
The song you can get cut as an insider often would have been laughed out of some workshop. I can name at least three "hits" in the top 40 right now that are just downright bad songs, but since a successful songwriter wrote or co wrote them, they got heard and even cut and charted.
Relationships.

You could also name dozens of names of spouses, mostly female, who wouldn't have had a shot in the depths of hell if they hadn't married an older veteran writer. People will now co write with them just in the hopes the hubby might co write someday (fat chance). So now the spouse gets all the co writes.
Another alternative is the affair and a pregnancy if you want to get really predatory about it.

Writing? Obviously this is an A game writers town, if you can have relationships with real writers. See most of them are home, with family's, friends, on the road as artists themselves, parenting, and all sorts of other various scenarios. You're not generally going to meet these people out and about. The only people you're going to meet in the bars for the most part are predatory types of people who feed off pleebs. It seems like the final glory days of writers nights ended as well.

It's very soul draining to be around successful people , some worth many millions, who don't seem to want anything from their successes other than to hang around each other and be drunk all the time in a dive bar. They go out of town to the same places year after year for "drinking vacations" then come home to drink more.

Without a quality relationship, even one friend, this is a miserable lonely place Only the younger people are going to get a shot at those relationships now , the sheer numbers of no talents have gotten so mind boggling insiders just won't listen anymore. It's a waste of time. No person with talent could sustain sanity for long anymore without some inside contacts.

I met someone the other day who made claimed to being a writer. When you went to their links, you couldn't even believe someone could be that delusional. It breaks your heart, not only for them, but for yourself, when you then find out that "no talent" is cowriting with "fill in blanks with A lister" because someone knew someone.

I just read the posts and ponder the sadness of it all. I also noticed that many of my favorite writers have "relocated" to other states as well, so even professional writers now are feeling the sting of these wunderkind hit makers we have in town now getting most of the cuts. They move because the day to day writing now is relegated to creating hits for 16 year olds to cut.

If it wasn't for the excellence of a few great artists still demanding top notch material, it would be pointless to be here anymore, there would be no hope at all. The final blow is when you actually do develop the relationships, then you come to find out they will never co write with you, because the competition is just to overwhelming. For every you in town, there is a you whose been doing it 30 years already. A middle aged person had a shot here before 9/11. That time has passed now, and unless you're already in the game, the chances are pretty much less than zero. | Yo, my names Justin, I'm 25, just moved to Nashville after graduating college.
