<![CDATA[Russian Speaking Voice Teacher Available Katya Kortny teaches group voice technique classes on Friday evenings as well as private (one-on-one) instruction. She is adept at teaching technique to students to use in any genre of music, including theater, classical, pop, and rock. Ms. Kortny studied at the Moscow Academy of Theatrical Arts, and was the star pupil of M.B. Mordvinoff and T. Yanko. She was invited to work in many Soviet musical venues, but chose to perform at the Moscow Musical and Operetta Theatre. There, she spent twenty years developing her talent and became one of the theatre's favorite stars. Katya starred in operetta classics such as DIE FLEDERMAUS, COUNTESS MARITSA, FRASKITA, MERRY WIDOW, SILVA, A TRIP TO THE MOON, and BLUE BEARD, as well as the musicals HELLO, DOLLY! and MY FAIR LADY. Katya has performed at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall (1992) and with Russian musical tours in New York, New Jersey, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington D.C, and other cities. While still in Russia, she taught acting skills for several years in the Moscow Drama Studio. Katya also acted as the Russian Song Vocal Coach for Fordham University's well-received production of THE THREE SISTERS in 2001. Recipient of the award "Honoured Artist of the Russian Federation" and a member of the All Russian Theatre Society, Katya joined Singers Forum in 1999 to teach voice technique and performance skills. Iâ€™d always wanted to street-perform in Nantucket so we scheduled a recording session with the pianist to lay down accompaniment tracks. With this CD I sang on the streets of Nantucket, in art galleries and at parties. The reason Liz's ideas and feedback work, is because she is a working actor, singer, writer, dancer, producer herself. All I need to do is give her a mere kernel of an interest in something and she comes back with of resources, ideas and locations where I can get paid to do what I love. From Gael Schaefer: Liz recognized my easy high notes and encouraged me to sing songs that showed them off and also fitted my ingÃ©nue image. When I auditioned for cruise ships, children's theater, regional theater, off-Broadway and more, I realized that I needed to be able to sing in different styles, My natural vibrato worked well for "legit soprano" roles but to get more jobs, I had to work on other styles such as pop, country, contemporary and folk. Liz has opened up the bottom of my range, showed me how to blend my chest and head registers, and choose songs that reflect the "new me." I was recently cast as Hannah in "The Spitfire Grill." And though I'm singing frequently in a lower register, I can still use my strong high notes. Liz has taught me the value of keeping my entire range in shape. So an unexpected result of my studying with her is that I am in greater touch with my feelings when I act. She has the musical vocabulary and experience to work with all levels of singers. I watched her do detailed work with singers of Broadway caliber, and I saw her draw original, moving performances from people with less experience. Liz has a passion and enthusiasm which she passes on her students. She has a great knowledge of resources and opportunities which are available, and she helps and encourages her students to go to auditions and to get work. from Heather McCall: Every time I got to sing in front of an audience I was paralyzed with fear, nothing would come out. Liz gave me confidence, support and a way of working. She refused to accept my lack of trust in myself, as if she knew something I didnâ€™t. She gave me â€œcan doâ€� exercises and got me vocalizing every day. Liz felt that it was time for me to get up on stage and recommended me to Southeastern Theatrical Productions for a revue called â€œBest of Broadway.â€� There were only three performers so you had to be able to do everything. They wanted an audition video so Liz created the material with me and videotaped me in her studio. I got the job and went on a 7-week tour, 10 shows a week touring through 5 states! It was a marvelous experience. I not only learned how to sing in front of audiences but to keep my voice in shape and functioning with the vocalise tape Liz had made for me. Thank you, Liz! From Chris Welber: I had been playing in a gigging rock band when I decided I needed to take my singing to a higher level. Liz immediately identified what I needed to work on. My low notes were basically non-existent, That was the first thing Liz took care of. When I met her for the first time, I knew how to write good lyrics and I knew I had a nice voice but... I couldn't sing. I had tried to get into voice classes at Columbia University where I taught French. However, at my audition for the Music Department I was told that though I may like to sing I had a huge pitch and rhythm problem, so they wouldn't accept me in the class. Then, I found Liz, someone who would teach me singing from A to Z. According to the Columbia people, I should probably have quit singing forever, but I didn't and I'm so glad. Liz taught me how to use my vocal instrument through breathing exercises, support, and through the blending of my head and chest registers. To make a long story short I am now involved in a project with professional musicians. I haven't heard of anyone else doing this--to perform live in front of an invited audience at her studio while being taped for a DVD. I know Liz has more professional clients, but she has this gift for dealing with people from the lower end of musical professionalism like me, to the top. from Christina Faison: I came to Liz Hodes fresh from the Midwest, Iowa, Iâ€™d sung since I was in diapers in countless musicals, church choirs in Davenport, but Iâ€™d never learned how to act a song. Liz made me aware of the lyrics. What did the song mean to me? Why did I want to sing it? What did I, as the character. want to achieve by singing those words? What had just happened in the characterâ€™s life just before singing the song? What happened afterwards? These were the questions Liz used to intrigue me as we worked on the song. Liz had studied with Uta Hagen and recommended I read her book, â€œRespect for Actingâ€�. It didnâ€™t matter if I was singing just 16 bars for an audition, Liz said that I had to learn the entire song. I talk about 16 bars because I was auditioning for Theatreworks, USA, and hoping to get my Equity card and I was allowed 16 bars. We had gotten my set-up monologue down to one line, that launched me into my 16 bars. Lo and behold, they called me back.five times!! I finally got the job and became a member of Actorâ€™s Equity. Liz was as ecstatic as I was. This is now the way I work, whether Iâ€™m going to an audition or preparing for a show. Thanks Liz. I've written a lot of music in the past 2-3 years that I am booking dates now to be out performing this summer. It's all groove based, and about building energy that people can dance to. I started adapting some of this to an acoustic setting just so I can start getting it out there. I've been getting a good reception from crowds and also venues that are waiting for me to bring this back in band form asap. I have recordings and charts for all of the songs and for the right keyboardist it should be a pretty easy and fun situation to hop in to. I need someone who has the ability and time, and realistically can get songs together on their own from the charts and clips and come to the studio knowing the parts of the song so we can put it together as a band. (917)553-8677 In response to some FAQ's: RECORDING: I point a stereo condenser mic and/or a digital video camera at the stage and record the gig; I mail a CD and/or DVD of the performance the next day. VAN: I pick you up at your apt or rehearsal space, drive you & your gear to the gig & back. Yes, I do help carry gear, and I'm very good at what I do. For a little extra I can guitar tech as well. PA: I bring the sound system, set it up & run it. From a 4-ch to a 16 ch board or 1200w powered mixer, 700w subs, mains, monitors, mics etc; I also have battery powered amps and a gas generator for outdoor gigs. $150 will cover a folk singer in a coffee shop or small bar. Most gigs will be around $300 and up. Disclaimer: The video and audio recordings are good for podcast, webcast or for sharing with family & friends. If you want a professional broadcast-quality music video contact a production company and be ready to spend a few grand!
