Barking dogs can be annoying and embarrassing, and we’re not talking about sore feet here. Dogs like most of us, need to “talk” but excessive talking whether human or Canine can be a source of frustration. Now there are several safe and humane ways to stop excessive barking whether you have a small dog, large dog or even a stubborn dog.You can choose from static bark collars, ultrasonic units or spray bark collars. All of these systems have proven themselves safe and effective over the test of time and if a neighbor’s dog needs a dose of bark control check out the PetSafe Outdoor ultrasonic bark deterrent that looks like a birdhouse.

The Pet Super Center carries these products as well as all those products you will need to keep your pet happy and healthy.

http://thepetsupercenter.com/dog-supplies/bark-control

**Please note these type of deterrents are not yet approved for humans!

THIS SWEET GIRL URGENTLY NEEDS A HOME ASAP! - PLS GIVE HER A CHANCE AT A GOOD LOVING HOME!!

Meet BERNICE - she is a 5 y blue f amstaff that was found along with another female brindle dog tied to a pole so tightly they could not move. Park Rangers brought them into the NYC Animal Care & Control with no incident except that they had to bring them in using the polestick which dogs are very scared of and adverse to. She ended up biting the pole so hard she punctured her lip and because of this the NY Dept of Health was notified and they put her on a 10 day "NHB" - non-human bite hold. Now usually when the hold comes up... the DOH has been less than kind to pits and have ordered they be put down.. but in Bernice's case, the DOH reviewed what the staff had to say and FOR ONCE they did not order Bernice to be put down and gave her a reprieve... but now she's in danger of being put down because there is NO SPACE LEFTat the shelter... so PLEASE SAVE HER!

She looks like a little blue hippo, with begging eyes in her cage as she is always ready for a stroll. She is a very reserved female , mature and calm , who wants to be your loyal companion. It takes time for her to "give herself up" but when she does, she is yours forever. She walks nicely and many dogs were met without creating any issue for her. Her tail is always wagging happily. BERNICE has a good appetite, a hand can be placed in her bowl w/o any problem even when dinner is meatloaf or chicken. I have never heard her bark. She is rather peaceful and likes to just stay at my feet and be petted and talked to.

BERNICE is a bit of a "couch potato", a good dog for a less active owner. I discovered that Bernice LIKES KITTENS/CATS!!. When I took her out and walked her by the kittens that had just been spayed...one of the kittens was crying in her cage.It was heartbreaking to both animals and humans. Bernice ran toward her. The kitten calmed down, stuck her arm through the bar to caress Bernice 's nose and Bernice licked her. I guess, maternal instincts. Bernice was a mother before and unfortunately she is a bit afraid of small kids so she would be best with adults and older kids only. Bernice has been wonderful with all the dogs she's met... she's just a sweet sweet girl and deserves another chance at a loving home!!
If you can SAVE BERNICE by committing to ADOPTING/FOSTERING, please send an e-mail to: SAVETHISDOG@GMAIL.COM with your phone Ctcs... so we can contact you ASAP with more info on her!... THANK YOU!!

Go ahead and charge a huge adoption fee to insure the safety of your beloved little family member, as long as that money goes directly into an account set up for them at the Vet that they will be seeing with their new family, or to purchase food and supplies for them, or if the new family is well off enough not to want the the financial assistance, the large adoption fee should go directly to an upstanding charity.
No matter the amount - $100 or $10,000, what does and always will irk the true animal lovers is that despite the fact that you claim "it breaks your heart", you have no other choice, and you will only let them go to a perfect home", you want that adoption fee to go into your own pocket rather than using it to make sure that the pet truly does have the best possible life after you have signed off on it.
So yes, no matter what the amount, if it's going into your pocket and not for the benefit of the dog, I will flag you.
Meow!
My name is Pandy. I am a year old and I love to play with cat toys! And real mice if you have them! I love to play and hang out. Sometimes I feel like I am a dog! But I am very much a cat too - I eliminated all mice in my foster dad's store! My foster dad cannot keep me though.... sigh... Will you take me home? Pandy was rescued from a kill shelter. He is neutered, healthy and up to date on all vaccinations. He tested negative for FIV and FELV. Please see more pics and a video of Pandy courtesy of the neighborhood blogger and cat lover:

http://www.newyorkshitty.com/?p=30340

Pandy is fostered in a local pet store and loves people and other cats. He is not very fond of dogs.

Beautiful, friendly and -oh, so special, polidactyl cat needs home!
His name is Jazz and he was recued from a kill shelter.
His owner dumped him because he had a hematoma on his ear (Jazz, not the owner although there must have been something wrong with the owner too..., oh, well.).
Since then Jazz had a corrective surgery but his ear will remain floppy.... Which combined with his extra digits makes him even more special!
You see, Jazz has 6 toes on his front paws! It makes it easy for him to text or play the piano (you have to train him, but theoretically he can do it, lol)

Jazz is about 1 year old.
He loves people and other cats.

He is neutered, FIV and FELV negative, vaccinated and micrchipped.
He is ready to move with you and make you one happy cat owner!

Please run don't walk to meet Cool Jazz!

Meow,
My name is Sammy and I am a 4-month old boy. I love to play with kittens and humans. I am soft and cute and I love to play. And snuggle. And purrr.
I am looking for home and I hired a crazy cat lady to help me out.
Actually she rescued me from a shelter and I am hanging out with her cats and fosters.

So, I am healthy (negative for FIV and FELV whatever that means) and will be neutered (which sounds a little scary) soon... hmmm.

If you want to meet me - and believe me - you DO want to meet me - contact this crazy cat lady and she'll let you know what to do.
Meow.
One more thing - we would like Sammy to be adopted with a kitty friend. If you already have a kitty friend for Sammy that's ok, tho.
Thanks to everyone on craigslist for helping and getting all our kittens, and other adult male cat great, loving homes!!!

We still have Houdini here and the longer he stays, the more un-happy he is becoming. His appetite has dropped greatly since being here in his cage, and he is now losing some weight. When we let him out, he crawls into our laps for pets and will eat then, but he makes it clear to us that he is not so thrilled about this whole thing. He is a 1 year old neutered male, vaccinated, and felv/fiv negative. We don't know how he would be in a home with other cats. He has severe scars from scratches on his nose from other cats. He is very timid and cowers around them, and you can sense that he was beat up on a lot. An only pet home might be best for this guy. We care for him very much, and want to see him happy in a loving home.

Call 718-979-9400 if interested!
Thank You!
After receiving the same message that's also posted to CL in an email I did apologize to this woman. I would not have rushed to judgement if the "details" had been posted. The details made a BIG difference in the story that was posted. There ARE people who bash the ACC and just sit there doing nothing while an animal dies, I have rushed to a site more than once to help an animal only to find that the ACC had already arrived and removed the animal.

"The post was not to highlight our rescue efforts to feed our ego," OK but once I read what you had done for the cat it did paint a totally different picture of why you were posting "A Cat Just Died."

The thing is, you did everything you could while "pointing out the lack of efficiency on the part of ACC." Without the details it sounded as if you were equally inefficient in tending to this dying cat. Thank you for clearing up that point. Thank you for educating me about how you feel I should have responded.
A Volunteer Wrote: Prepare yourself for this heartache: This beautiful 2 year old girl, who has an enchanting, zen-like quality, was deemed "too depressed" by our behaviorist for an evaluation to be conducted. We can tell you this: We had a magical time in the park with this angelic girl, who radiates serenity. At 45 pounds she is striking looking, with a zebra-pattern coat that is so soft to the touch, and yellow eyes that should have earned her a starring part in Avatar. We were absolutely enamored by her: She was wonderful and gentle with other dogs, so happy and grateful just to be pet, and wanted nothing more than to stay by our side. And then it was time to go back into the kennel at the shelter, and we wanted to die a little. She hung her head, turned her back to it, and tried not to go. Then she started to shake. We can only guess at what her life was like before she got here, but for sure it was better than this, judging from the fact that she is leash trained, housebroken, and gentle as a rabbit. Please, do not make her stay one more night in this place. There are dogs strong enough to withstand it with their spirits in tact. The beautiful Baby is not one of them. Please, do right by her gentle, caring, absolutely helpless self.

Baby's time at the kill-shelter is running out. Please, if you can rescue her by adopting or fostering her call Michal at 631-220-2255 ASAP. She needs to get out of there. Thank you so much.
If you're looking at a cat or kitten and it's:

**sneezing,** it's time to check the nose. Is there mucous on the nose? This cat/kitten has an upper respiratory infection. A vet will recommend an antibiotic depending on what type of bacteria is causing the infection. Do not insist on giving antibiotics without a vet exam for practically everything - that is not the way to "treat" a cat.

Look at the:

**gums** too. If they are pale it means the cat is not getting enough oxygen or is anemic. If the gums are blue - this cat needs a vet ASAP because it is really low on oxygen and may have heart or other complications.

**eyes** and see if they are clear without mucous.

**teeth** to see what condition they're in. A cat with dirty teeth that are not cleaned by a vet can develope mouth infections that cannot be cured but need regular care for the rest of its life.

**ears**. Are they dirty? Does the cat shake its head alot? See if the swabbed ear comes up with gritty, black stuff that looks like coffee grinds. That is ear mites. It is treated for 2 weeks with one product and for 30 days with mineral oil.

Does the cat have **diahhrea**? It is not always due to change in diet. Diahhrea can be caused by parasites and must be diagnosed by a veterinarian. Diahhrea that smells extremely awful can be attributed to Coccidia a parasite that can kill a kitten within days. Another extremely awful smelling diahhrea is caused by Giardia. The cat loses weight and has projectile diahhrea every time it eats.

Cats with Diahhrea usually are also somewhat **dehydrated** because of the fluids they keep losing with the diahhrea. The vet may want to give the cat subcutaneous fluids. KittyKind recommends raw meat diets or tells you to give the cat rice. While you're doing this the cat is just getting worse.

Be sure the cat has been checked for **fleas**.

VERY important, and finally be sure to receive paperwork showing dates of deworming and vaccination.

Be sure to get all medical files on your newly adopted pet. Be aware that some of the above conditions can be easily treated by a vet.

However, if you adopt a cat and think it is healthy the vet visit never happens and the cat only suffers in silence until it's health becomes seriously compromised.

What is Ringworm?

If you are adopting a cat and it has lots of round, rough looking bald spots around the ears, eyes, neck and paws. Stop a minute. This could be due to a liver/kidney problem or it could be Ringworm. Ringworm can be treated. It is actually a fungus that attacks the cats hair and can spread over a good portion of the cats body. It is contagious to other cats and people can get it too. People can catch it from the cats. It can be treated with Athlete's Food Cream or a lotion called Fungisan. I recently used an ointment of goldenseal and myrrh and the results were FAST. A vet can give the cat a pill and a skin ointment to help get rid of the problem. Ringworm is itchy and looks like hives on a person. Always wash your hands after handling a kitten or cat with RingWorm. Update: I just learned that Goldenseal applied topically works wonders on getting rid of ringworm. Courtesy of Neighborhood Cats seminar!

If you see a kitten that you want to adopt with symptoms of sickness, make sure the organization takes it to their vet first and that it's healthy before adopting. DO NOT TAKE IT HOME TO MAKE IT WELL. TAKE IT HOME AFTER IT'S WELL. See the cute little gray and white kitten? He was sent home with what was called an upper respiratory (cold). Turns out he had herpes and ended up having to have the eye removed. Very expensive and very saddening.

***Always*** Get Medical Records to take home with you of newly adopted animals. Verbal assurances that they'll be mailed to you are not followed up. Some adopters expect you to take the animal to the vet after adopting what you expect to be a healthy animal

NEVER TAKE HOME A SICK ANIMAL. IF MEDICAL CARE IS PROVIDED IT CAN BE STOPPED AT ANY TIME. EVEN WITH A SIGNED CONTRACT DO YOU REALLY WANT TO HAVE TO DIDDLE OVER THE POINTS OF HOW MUCH MEDICAL CARE; WITH WHICH DOCTOR ETC IF YOU HAVE TO SPEND MONEY OUT OF YOUR POCKET? DO YOU REALLY NEED THE HEADACHE OF TAKING SOMEONE TO COURT TO GET THEM TO DO WHAT THEY PROMISED?

WAIT UNTIL THE ANIMAL IS TOTALLY HEALTHY; GET YOUR MEDICAL FILES; GET YOUR CONTRACTS AND THEN ADOPT. ONCE THE ANIMAL IS IN YOUR HOME ALL BETS ARE OFF.

Many rescue contracts DO STATE that rescues are not responsible for personal or physical damage in a foster home. If you do not want to agree to the terms, you do not have to foster with that rescue. It is far better to walk away than to have a bad experience and then be told that "No one put a gun to your head."

A lesson to be learned: Use Forms posted under "Ask Questions Before Fostering/Adopting a Pet.
Get signed paperwork every step of the way - a Papertrail is your best friend.

Be sure you’re both “on the same page.” Policy needs to be made clear to the foster home at the time of fostering. When it has to come up on CL because of an incident then communication between the parties was not clear at the time of fostering and/or the record keeping is pretty sloppy.

Someone on Craigslist debated that "If a rescue agrees to pay out of pocket expenses as in food and the like, and they do not pay, the individual needs to go to small claims court. The cost of small claims court is nominal --it is $15. Doubtful you would be owed less than that and making a fuss. So is $15 court fee too much???? Court is in the evening so you do not have to take time off from work. How hard is this to do if you are owed money by a rescue or you have a claim of $5000 or less in any instance, rescue or otherwise."

My opinion is why does it have to come to taking anyone to court to get their money back? Even if it is only $15? Shame! Shame! Shame! Ask Questions; Create a Papertrail; Use Forms and Contracts; keep Good Records.

Questions of Policy are addressed on the forms provided for you on my website listed below.
Hopefully more people will use those forms and there will be less ability for foster homes and adopters to be scammed. Hopefully the adoption/foster area will stabilize with people who are honest and forthright.

Hopefully more people will use those forms and have a paper trail so that they CAN verify their experience.

Hopefully people will begin to call the Better Business Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce with their complaints.

That will also help the Attorney General track the bogus and the non profits that should be investigated.

What I’m saying is that foster/adopter people are entitled to paperwork, signed contracts and honest agreements that can be verified because rescuers and 501 c3 organizations really will honor what they say and not force people to out them on CL or to have to go to Small Claims Court or to have to call the Better Business Bureau or Chamber of Commerce or the IRS or the Attorney General’s Office.

A bad experience is not just about $15 or even $100 – it’s about being lied to and financially inconvenienced sometimes with a foster animal that needs ongoing medical care..

It's about being stuck with a feral kitten that was portrayed as shy and maybe having it bite or scratch you. A cat bite is serious business - it can do serious damage because of infection.

It's about bringing home a cat/kitten "with an upper respiratory" that really had pneumonia or Calisi Virus or Herpes or something else that is contagious and can spread to your other pets - ringworm can be spread to humans.

It's about having a kitten die because it had coccidia and the diahhrea was explained away as caused by a change in diet

It's about having a horrible experience because the animal was misrepresented and the group won't take it back because they have no cage space or trying to pressure you to keep it a little longer even though your other pet is being beat up by the little guest.

Please Ask the Questions!! Get the paperwork!! http://mysite.verizon.net/vzeyfg4f/kittycatfosterpitfalls
Any honest group will have no problems answering your questions. After 7 years of volunteering and fostering here's what I learned.

Paper trails prevent "misunderstandings" or denying that a promise was made. Signed paper holds up better if you need to go to Court. Promises are made to be broken. A picture is worth a thousand words - yes, keep pictures too!

1. Read these forms and ask the questions that I've designed to protect you - policies are not something that should change depending on who is being recruited to foster or adopt.
3. Never forget that in some cases you are socializing the animal for this group who will adopt it out and collect an adoption fee plus grant money for "expenses" that they save on by fostering the pet out.

You should not be obligated to pay for Food, Litter or Medical Costs. They will also claim expenses to preserve their tax free status - if you spend money on the fostered animal get a letter from them for YOUR tax records. Your Cash is difficult to get back if the pet was misrepresented as sociable or just shy and instead turns out to be Feral or if the pet is sick and will cost you money after the adoption for vet care. Checks prove the exact amount paid and who it was paid to. Just because you're adopting at a reputable pet store doesn't mean the store's management is responsible for helping you get your money back. Check or credit card is a file that is not so easy to misplace and can be used as proof of where you adopted from if you need to return the pet per Adoption Contracts that state: "We will take the animal back at any time. . . "

People who are not ethical will tell you they need to pay medical expenses and that's why they ask for cash. Some of these people call themselves Rescue Groups; and are not a Non Profit. What does this mean? It means they don't pay taxes on all the cash they get in - not just one adoption but consider 10 at $100 that's good intake for one day. What's that come to at the end of the month, year? That doesn't include on the spot daily cash donations .

Not the little guy with one or two kittens for adoption but many every weekend. Is this rescue or a new lifestyle? Is the Adoption Fee non refundable? Why?

I'm sure there are some honorable Non Profits and rescuers out there but there are definitely a few bad eggs and those are the ones you need to watch out for. Consider the income from 10 adoptions at $100 each or 5 adoptions of 2 kittens (same price) you've got to wonder how much it generated over a weekend or over an entire week or year. Regular Donations in cash also add up.

Adoption Fees and Intake Fees are not Donations. I learned this when I visited the IRS in 2002. A donation means you gave a gift without receiving anything in return. A FEE however, is money paid for a service. Non Refundable? Ask why. If the answer seems fuzzy don't do it.

NON PROFITS are supposed to report income from adoptions, intake and donations. With some unethical groups CASH is very often not reported.

Non Profits can pay for their vet fees by check or credit card too.

This is called Bookkeeping! Income & Expense. Those things the IRS wants to know about. Cash often is not reported by the unethical and if you need proof of payment you have none when you pay with cash.

Get Original Medical records and Receipts for items the group says they paid.
They are a record of what you were told about this pet.
They cannot deny these records.
Their receipts show whether they actually paid for spay/neuter/vaccinations and anything else they claim or if they had it done
for FREE at the ASPCA van or through some other resource and are charging you for it.

Get original Medical Records. Look them over BEFORE you get home.

Get written Contracts! Get your forms signed by them too. (Get them from the website below)

Correct Paperwork will save you if you have to go to Court. I learned all this when I sued one group - I had no paperwork.

Use the forms created for your protection, everything I learned from my experience is on the table for you to learn from.

Ask the Questions generated for your side of the interview to get facts needed for a successful adoption.

I learned all this through Hard experience, You can learn from my experience.
Most of this is common sense. Blind trust will only result in an unsavory experience.

http://www.mysite.verizon.net/vzeyfg4f/kittycatfosterpitfalls

Go to the above site for your free forms and questions to ask organizations before Fostering or Adopting.

Thank you for posting your experience! More and more people are posting similar experiences on Craigslist and they talk about the same thing: bait & switch and your very clear statement that though they screen you it's clear the impulse adoption is what they strive for.

I've been posting for the past few years warning people about these rescues you mentioned and the way they treat people.
I've posted forms for people to take with them so that they'll know what questions to ask; what to look for during the conversation and regarding the health of the cats; I've posted warnings about paying by check or credit card vs. paying by cash.

What you posted sounds so much like what I write about that I guess it hit a nerve because someone took the time to flag each and every one of my posts probably - this is their response to the truth. Your posting took the words right out of my mouth. Nobody has the right in America to tell us who or what we can feed. Personally, I find it very cruel and inhumane to even come up with a law like this. Our lawmakers are out of control and something really needs to be done. People need to start having empathy and compassion for all living things and leave the hate and cruelty behind. If you don't like cats, fine, but that doesn't mean you should watch them starve to death and suffer either. What kind of person would like this and thinks this is a good idea? Whoever you are, you need help and how really does this solve the problem?

Hi,
I have two small dogs (with big personalities) and am looking for someone to sit them once sometime between May 7 and 12 and a second time between May 14 and May 22/23. They are very friendly (with other pets as well), but they need someone who is strong enough to walk the both of them - they are small but people often underestimate how strong little dogs can be - especially these two combined (but they do walk very well on the leash).. Furthermore, I am looking for someone I can trust, their last sitter was horrible - rearranged my apartment and one of the boys came back completely leash-aggressive (when he wasn't before - now the problem has been solved luckily but it took a while and just proves that he wasn't treated well). Please send me an email with your price per day/week and some info about yourself, including experience.

I have to agree with the poster who is defending feral cats and other animals left to the streets by irresponsible people. My cat is missing and I miss her dearly. I don't feel that she is dead but just lost, maybe got scared, usually she goes outside and comes back in. Recently last month I lost an 18 year old cat who passed away naturally, went to sleep and didn't wake up, the best way to go, so I'm more than devasted by my missing cat. I care for my animal friends, and I care for those who are just thrown out because we're a disposable society, if we don't want it anymore we throw it away, can't stand kill shelters, that is no solution, and for a town to dictate whether or not you can feed and take care of feral cats is just ignorant stupid. Who are they to tell you that you cannot feed them. Where do these people come from. Not even the town where I live will go that far--East Hampton--There are cruel people out there, people who hate cats because of some superstition, or hate animals in general. Over population, yeah there is over population, not animals but people who are a cancer on this earth, who just consume consume consume because we as a race, species feel its our right, because Genisis in Judeo Christian thought, says God gave man dominion over the earth, which is not in the original text, the original actually says God made man caretakers of the earth. Caretakers not kings to rape and pillage or dispose of what we deem as unfit.

Yes cats are predators, yes they go after small animals and either play with them to death or eat them and yes they use the earth as their litter box but don't we all, in one way shape or form. Stop being a problem and help be part of the solution. Respect all life. Everything that is alive belongs here whether you want to believe it or not, they belong her and have a right to be here.

Fight that stupid bill in Brookhaven, it sounds stupid it is stupid and even if it passes, disobey it.

Cat passed on (stray, lost?)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Date: 2010-03-11, 6:44PM EST
Reply to: comm-tgwzj-1639828505@craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This poor boy was found today, his soul departed up to the Rainbow Bridge. I was so sure he was someone's pet because he was friendly, and I tried posting about him on here hoping he did have a home and was lost. I'm so sad, I just wish I could have saved him. And the Town of Brookhaven shelter said when I called them about him, 2-3 days then they'll get around to picking his body up etc.

I checked him to ensure he still wasn't holding on and if I could rush him to a vet, no life. I stood over him and said a prayer. Please say a prayer for this angel.

And this is why we need to enact TNR everywhere, it saves lives. Most of the cats weren't even born out on the street they were dumped by people and the streets are a cruel place to live. Let's just hope it wasn't poison, as I can see by those that delete this sort of post on here, people can be cruel!

I've attached the kitty's picture to remember him by properly. May he rest in peace and now have a beautiful life where there is no more pain and always warm places to lay and plenty of food.

Rest in peace, boy - I am so sorry I couldn't save you.

We must fight against the spirit of unconscious cruelty with which we treat the animals. Animals suffer as much as we do. True humanity does not allow us to impose such sufferings on them. It is our duty to make the whole world recognize it. Until we extend our circle of compassion to all living things, humanity wi...ll not find peace. ~Albert Schweitzer, The Philosophy of Civilization
