But the speech—written by one of President Bush's speechwriters—didn't tell us the truth about Sarah Palin's extremist positions. And the more that people know her far-right views, the less they support her. * Palin recently said that the war in Iraq is "God's task." She's even admitted she hasn't thought about the war much—just last year she was quoted saying, "I've been so focused on state government, I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq." 1, 2 * Palin has actively sought the support of the fringe Alaska Independence Party. Palin asked the library how she might go about banning books because some had inappropriate language in them—shocking the librarian, Mary Ellen Baker. According to Time, "news reports from the time show that Palin had threatened to fire Baker for not giving "full support" to the mayor." 9 * She DID support the Bridge to Nowhere (before she opposed it). Palin claimed that she said "thanks, but no thanks" to the infamous Bridge to Nowhere. But in 2006, Palin supported the project repeatedly, saying that Alaska should take advantage of earmarks "while our congressional delegation is in a strong position to assist." 10 The plain fact of the matter is that Sarah Palin did a bang-up job delivering a Karl Rove-style political attack speech last night. <![CDATA[The money was alloted to the budget but not earmarked for anything when appropriated. She did not take it home with her. It is still in the Alaskan budget. It is her executive decision, based on the numbers presented to her now in comparision with the numbers 2 years ago not to build the bridge, but to continue the exploration for other alternatives to get to the Island. She could not build the bridge until the road on Gravina Island was built. It is still being built as we write. The $25 million dollars appropriated by the Federal Government specifically for the road is being used to build the road as planned. The alternative of the enhanced ferry access would utilize this road. Thanks for wanting to know. ]]>

The idea was to build this bridge to Gravina Island, a lightly populated island, along with a three mile road originally mant to connect the airport and the new bridge. The concept is that this project would open up new territory fo rexpansion. Congress earmarked $223 million for the project. Congress removed the earmark language for the money, but it still went to Alaska leaving it up to the administration of then Governor Frank Murkowski to decide whether to go ahead with the bridges or spend the money on something else. That was in 2006. In 2008 the projected costs of the ketchikan bridge rose to nearly $400 million. It is important to note that in 2006, while running for the governor's race, Palin did indicate she would also consider alternatives to a bridge. An enhanced ferry access to Gravina Island is one of the options under consideration at this time. So the readers need to understand that the monies that were allotted for "something" to be built to Gravina Island, was not necessarily a bridge. When the costs rose $177 milliion dollars more, the monies would have come out of State money. It did require a second look. Even though Alaska is flooded with new oil revenues, brought by high oil prices and a new tax regime, Palin vetoed $268 million in state capital projects this year. It is easy to just repeat what the media tells you, but you must know and understand the facts. If you do, you will understand that there is no issue with the bridge to nowhere. This wouldn't be such of a big deal if Sarah wasn't an advocate of abstinence-based sex education. Obviously it didn't work for her daughter, and its obviously not working in general. Kudos to Obama for doing the honorable thing by stating he won't use it as a political pawn. McCain didn't do such a great job by picking her. Reportedly, he only met her once or twice before picking her, and now there are reports that she's under investigation for abuse of power, not to mention that she's stated herself that she doesn't know much about international politics. McCain's going to have a hard time saying Obama's inexperienced when his own running mate has comparable experience. One can only assume that his motives for the Palin pick were not in the best interest for his country, contrary to what he flaunts endlessly. We need to put an end to the hypocrisy in politics, put our egos aside and country first, and elect who will lead America with integrity. The Republicans will keep on saying how Palin will make a great VP and how McCain made a brilliant choice. McCain, in my opinion, did not make a choice worth the label of brilliance. Obama picking Biden, someone with years of experience and public recognition, not to mention his foreign relations background, was a brilliant choice. Picking Palin, on the other hand, with a few years as mayor of a town whose population is less than 8,000 and less than two years as governor - who in this time span is under investigation for abuse of power and denies global warming is manmade - was for what looks to be, all of the wrong reasons. I'm sure Sarah Palin is an honorable woman, but is she the most qualified? If he was seriously concerned with experience, foreign or domestic, or with a concurrency with the majority of Americans on the issues, he wouldn't have picked a first term governor from Alaska with Democratic views on the Iraq war. He wouldn't have picked someone who admits herself that she is inexperienced with anything outside of her state; he would have picked Mit Romney or one of his opponents during the primaries, not someone he knows little more than you or I. ]]>

Giuliani last night: "On the other hand, you have a resume from a gifted man with an Ivy League education. He worked as a community organizer. What? He worked -- I said -- I said, OK, OK, maybe this is the first problem on the resume." Palin last night: I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a "community organizer," except that you have actual responsibilities. Now, the truth is that, starting at age 23, Obama ran a faith-based charity called the Developing Communities Project. It was made up of eight Catholic parishes when he got there and had one staff member. He was its director, meaning he was in charge. He made decisions about it, including staffing, budgets, etc. And when he left in 1988 to go to law school, he had grown its budget from $70,000 to $400,000, its staff from 1 to 13 people. More important, he created a job training program for this community and a college prep tutoring program. As mayor, she built a hockey rink/rec center using eminent domain (because apparently there just isn't enough land in Alaska). And keep in mind the timeline here: Obama did this as a young man BEFORE going to law school, becoming a successful lawyer and a law professor. I don't think it's right to attack someone for working in a faith-based charity out of college. I think we all have some embarrassing first-jobs in our past. I would not make fun of Palin for being a beauty queen and sports reporter out of college during these same years. "Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a "fiscal conservative." During her six years as mayor, she increased general government expenditures by more than 33 percent. During those same six years, the amount of taxes collected by the city increased by 38 percent. This was during a period of low inflation (1996-2002). She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a regressive sales tax, which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she promoted benefitted large corporate property owners way more than they benefited residents. The huge increases in tax revenue during her mayoral administration weren't enough to fund everything on her wish list, though — borrowed money was needed, too. She inherited a city with zero debt but left it with indebtedness of more than $22 million. What did Mayor Palin encourage the voters to borrow money for? Was it the infrastructure that she said she supported? The sewage treatment plant that the city lacked? Or a new library? No. $1 million for a park. $15 million-plus for construction of a multi-use sports complex, which she rushed through, on a piece of property that the city didn't even have clear title to. That was still in litigation seven years later — to the delight of the lawyers involved! The sports complex itself is a nice addition to the community but a huge money pit, not the profit-generator she claimed it would be. She also supported bonds for $5.5 million for road projects that could have been done in five to seven years without any borrowing. Sarah Palin as his running mate is that it reinforces his maverick credentials. I see it the opposite way: It undermines them. McCain looks like any other calculating politician, willing to do whatever it takes to win. The maverick argument is that Palin is an outsider -- the only one of four on the November ballot. "She's not from these parts and she's not from Washington," McCain said in Dayton, Ohio. Palin complements McCain's reformer credentials, having spoken out against corruption and earmarks in a state that has an oversize share of both. She is a young, fresh and, yes, female face. "A running mate who can best help me shake up Washington," McCain said. But I can't believe that McCain truly thinks Palin is the best choice to be a heartbeat away -- especially in a White House that would be occupied by the oldest man ever to be elected to the office. McCain runs the risk that Palin will turn out to be Dan Quayle with an up-do -- except with less experience. By the time he was selected as George H.W. Bush's running mate, Quayle had served in the House and Senate for a dozen years. Palin has been governor for less than two. Did anybody watching McCain introduce Palin on Friday doubt that he would have preferred to be standing there with Joe Lieberman? When he and Palin hugged on stage, it had the air of the new daughter-in-law joining the family. I write this as someone who has qualms about Barack Obama's inexperience. I found his choice of Joe Biden reassuring; Obama got credit, in my view, for recognizing his weak points and moving to buttress them. I write, too, as someone who respects McCain and who resisted piling on when he made accommodations in his pursuit of the Republican nomination. If he needed to mend fences with the religious right, fine. If he needed to reverse himself on the Bush tax cuts, that was far more disturbing, but as a matter of political calculation, it was understandable. As Don Rumsfeld might say, you run for the presidency in the party that you have. But McCain has always been clearheaded about the central reason for his candidacy: He wants to lead the country in the fight against global Islamic extremism. If "the threat of radical Islamic terrorism" is, as McCain says, "the transcendent challenge of our time," how would Vice President Palin help him address it? About the woman thing: "We should all be proud," Hillary Clinton said in a statement, of this "historic nomination." Sorry, but count me out. I found Palin's selection, and her calculated shout-out to unhappy Clinton supporters, insulting. Clinton's candidacy was attractive to me because it was not premised on gender. "I am very proud to be making history running as a woman for president of the United States, but I'm not running because I am a woman," she said. "I'm running because I think I am the most qualified and experienced person to hit the ground running in January 2009." Palin's selection, though, feels like a disappointing retreat to the identity politics of 1984, when Geraldine Ferraro was picked for the Democratic ticket solely because Walter Mondale wanted a woman. On Friday, Ferraro was on Fox News, talking about how "people are looking for a historic campaign," and suggesting that the choice of Palin "might do it." So women "who are disaffected by how Hillary was treated by the media, by how she was treated by the Obama campaign," as Ferraro sees it, are going to flock to McCain simply because he panders to them with Palin? Because Palin, who just a short time ago was describing Clinton's "whine," lauded her Friday for showing "such determination and grace"? Because, as Palin said, "it turns out the women of America aren't finished yet and we can shatter that glass ceiling once and for all"? How dumb do they think women are? So dumb that former Clinton supporters would defect to McCain-Palin, even though the candidates' agendas -- including their agendas on issues of particular importance to women -- could not be more different? In the estimation of this woman, anyway, McCain's standing went down, not up, with this cynical choice. ]]>

<![CDATA[ I had dinner last night with a Republican-leaning independent who was despondent over John McCain's choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate. She had been looking forward to supporting McCain as a fiscal conservative with a deep understanding of foreign relations. But all she could now see was that picture of Palin's pregnant 17-year-old looking defiant and stupid as she held mom's fifth baby. Many religious conservatives are jubilant. They regard Palin as a swell choice because her high-schooler was going to have the baby. The line sent my friend into shock. This is not a matter of abortion politics, she said, but of managing one's own affairs. "Don't they have birth control up in Alaska?" she asked. If that view has any currency among Republican-leaners, you can imagine what other independents are thinking. Or disaffected supporters of Hillary Clinton. Barack Obama's recent pandering toward the Clinton holdouts didn't do the Democrat a fraction of the good that McCain is doing him. McCain's apparent belief that dangling any woman before diehard Clinton fans would win them over may be optimistic. Until now, one could counter the Democrats' argument that a McCain presidency would amount to a third term for Bush. After all, McCain is a deficit hawk. He cares about the environment. Many pro-choice voters were willing to overlook McCain's generally anti-abortion stance on the belief that he didn't really care about the issue. And the widespread concern regarding McCain's age could have been assuaged by the choice of a competent vice president. Then who does McCain pick for VP? A 44-year-old who parades her dysfunctional family as a poster-child for conservative values. Who has virtually no foreign policy experience. It's four more years of national humiliation as our leadership undermines the teaching of evolutionary science, and if something happens to John McCain, opposes stem-cell research. One tries to untangle McCain's political calculations. The Schiavo case, creationism and similar excesses appeal to a passionate but small slice of the electorate. They are one reason voters are booting Republicans out of power. So while some religious conservatives may be "energized" by the Palin pick, most everyone else is revolted. You can't figure McCain. He had been doing well up to now -- holding even with Obama in a dreadful year for Republicans and building support among the independents who call the shots in swing states. His parents came from Puerto Rico and Spain. Cubans can be very blond or very black due to the African slave trade and the Spanish influence. Mexicans might be Indian looking natives or creamy colored, with black luxurious hair from the Spanish influence. He has accomplished nothing, and yet is rewarded with the honor of representing an American political party in running for the highest office. He has nothing to offer except the color of his skin. He has disassociated himself from the voices of the black community by excluding pioneers such as Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson from his campaign. He is the "token" for the Democrats and was their last ditch effort to try to win the election. I do not agree with the reverse discrimination techniques of Sharpton and Jackson, but I do acknowledge them as the voice of America's Blacks. Where are they in this election? To go even one step further, Obama makes a statement that he has Ludicris on his MP3 player to appeal to the Black community. He must know what kind of music he plays and the messages he sends out. Then he chastises him for his song. Again, who is the real Obama? For me, a Puerto Rican woman, he is the reason affirmative action never works. This process is insulting and subjects people to substandard ethics and expectations. I never needed affirmative action to reach my goals and have always been proud to be American. I speak English. My kids speak English. I have always worked and lived within my means. I never expected the government to get me out of a jam.
