| It seems I am noticing more people than usual wanting to adpot a Pitt Bull puppy...I just have this to say: I HOPE your wanting to adpot this dog as a member of your family,to care for it and love it, NOT to put this dog in any danger, meaning fighting other dogs. People who consider this type of action a "sport" are demented people and should be jailed and never allowed to own even a fish! Just a thought to everyone. A dog is basically what you make it. No dog should be subjected to any violence and Pitt Bulls are I think the most common dog that gets into this type of trouble. PLEASE,take care of animals. A Pitt Bull can be your best friend. | Going away for vacation or travel for business? Chance was picked up as a stray but we think he might have come from a home not too long ago. Although he's a stray, CHANCE is a smart boy who understands what you want him to do, although he doesn't always listen. The shelter has a lot of distractions however and we think CHANCE would do better in a quiet environment where he can actually hear you better. He would appreciate a home with a new friend. Why not come by the shelter and see if that might be you. What's there to lose other than a chance at CHANCE? (top)

Ali (A06318089) is a 1 to 2 year old Boxer/Pit Bull mix that was picked up as a stray wandering the streets of Philadelphia. Ali has a medium energy level and is learning how to walk well on leash. His expressive face and soulful eyes are just begging for some to take him home. Like the famous boxer Muhammad Ali, this great dog is agile and athletic. He enjoys the attention of people, but is too feisty to live with cats. We aren't sure how he is with other dogs yet. Please come down to the shelter and visit with him! (bottom)

If you can't adopt a dog today, perhaps you would consider saving a life by fostering? You would provide food, water, a crate, blankets and love. The shelter provides limited medical care at the clinic (for kennel cough, etc.) and helps advertise the dog on PetFinder. You can bring them to adoption events on the weekend which are run by the shelter. There is a large volunteer network ready and willing to help you foster! Please go to the shelter (11am -6pm) and ask for Natalie or Jill if you are ready to foster! You must bring your dominant resident dog for a dog meet if you are interested in fostering.

Adoption fee is $40 plus an $8 fee for a city license if you are a Philadelphia resident

Address of the shelter: 111 W. Hunting Park Ave, Philly PA 19140

PAWS' Adoption Center is open every day from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. There are more than 50 adoptable dogs at the shelter each day! Please reference this dog's ID NUMBER when inquiring about this pet.

All dogs adopted from PAWS/PACCA are up to date on age appropriate vaccinations. Spaying or neutering is included in the adoption fee and all dogs are spayed or neutered prior to going home. Your new best friend will be permanently identified with a 24 Petwatch microchip!

Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., several of our pets make an appearance at the Oregon Avenue PETsMART in South Philly, the Bustleton/Cottman PETsMART in NE Philly, Rittenhouse Square at 18th and Walnut, and animals can be adopted every day at our new adoption center at 2nd and Arch Streets in Olde City. |
Meet Casper (A06337878)! He is approximately 2 years old. He is a solidly medium built Pit Bull terrier mix. He was surrendered to the shelter by his previous owner because they felt he was too active. However, this breed does need lots of exercise. He likes to run and play ball. He does need a little help in learning to walk a little better on the leash, but Casper is a good boy and even knows “sit”. After he has had his walk and play time he enjoys to cuddle. He gets along well with other dogs, but not sure of cats yet. So stop by and meet friendly Casper. He could be what your looking for! * It is possible that this dog is deaf* (top)

Felix (A06363170) is a big sweetheart that likes to give and receive attention. He's a very solid dog with decent leash manners too! He’s pretty calm, and loves to just lie next to you and relax. He does try to be a lapdog, even though he’s a little bit too big for that! He hasn’t been dog reactive at the shelter. Does he seem like the right dog for you? If so, please come and see Felix at the Shelter today. (bottom)

| Several years ago my indoor cat decided to take a vacation and ran away. We were devasted and I posted signs all over my townhome community. One day a woman called with a tip for me. She said to put the UNWASHED clothing of the cat's favorite person in the house out on your deck. Well we didn't have a deck so I used a chair to carry the scent of the clothing. I first put my clothing out but the cat didn't come home. After a couple of days I put my Husband's clothing out. By the end of the first week the cat showed up at 5:30 am. I was so elated. It actually worked. This may not work in every case but it did for me. Our cat just needed the scent to find his way home.

If anyone else should try this please let me know if this works for you. I am not sure if this works for dogs but it is sure worth the try.
UPDATE: Since the first time I posted this TWO families tried it and their cat came home.
Good Luck to all finding their pet!

I am fostering 2 formerly stray angels!!! They are the cutest brother and sister ever. The male (Pasquale, he's the bigger one) is mostly gray with some white, and the little girl (Felicity) is mostly gray, white, and has a little beige on her (dilute tortie). They are long hair and the sweetest things ever. I am guessing they are 7-8 weeks old. They are very sweet, human friendly, and they love to play and cuddle with each other.

These guys really need a home. I would love to find a new family for them ASAP. I can be available most days before Thanksgiving to meet and hopefully adopt them to their new loving home.

Gemini is a beautiful 8 year-old pitbull girl. She is the smilingest dog at the shelter, and that says a lot for her personality and her love of people.

Gemini is graying around the face a bit but is full of life, with many more years of love to give. She enjoys going for walks and and behaves well on the leash. She also seems to be housebroken and to enjoy other dogs.

I tried to work with my landlord on keeping her but he won't budge. i had her on here before, but i kept stalling cause i don't want to get rid of her but can't stall any more. So, please if you have a love for cat's,have good intentions and can take good care of her please adopt her. I would like someone who knows they can care for her the rest of her life and not give her away or take her to the spca after they decide they don't want a cat. That's what i'm trying to avoid. I just want to give her a good home. and vet references would also be greatly appreciated! thanks for you're interest and please consider adopting jingles. | will be a family dog no game dogs please im looking for a pup that will grow to be a family dog thanks joe email me what u have colors ages and the adoptions fee thanks joe | Free to good home.

Hughie has been here waiting for a home, but caught the kitty version of a cold. He has started to sneeze, and he really needs YOUR help!

If you have room to give Hughie a few weeks of foster care, you'll truly be saving a life. Once Hughie is feeling better, he will be adoptable.

Unfortunately, the shelter is completely full right now! Hughie's only chance to get out of the shelter alive depends on YOU!

There are many volunteers willing to help you with fostering if at first it seems daunting. All Hughie needs is a little love and compassion to help him through this.

Upper respiratory infections are easily treatable with the right medication, which will be provided by the shelter. Once this handsome guy is in a home environment, he will be well and ready to be adopted within a couple of weeks time. Without a home environment and someone to help him through this, he won't have any chance at all.

Don't give up! It is due to them being so busy caring for the animals.

I have learned it is best to just go down there and talk to Natalie and tell her you would like to foster, there are so many animals there that need fostering.

Oksana is a terific, friendly and outgoing pitbull we've been fostering for PAWS. She has the cutest wrinkle-face in the world, loves everyone she meets, and she's ready for adoption to a loving home.

Oksana is between one and two years old, spayed and up to date on vaccines. She is crate-trained and has been in foster care in a home with other dogs and children age 3 to 10. Her behavior with cats is not so polite, so a cat-free home will be best for this all-terrier girl. She's a strong dog, but not very high-energy; one walk a day keeps her happy and calm.

Scribbles is an adorable but sadly neglected little guy who needs somewhere to recover his health. A foster home may be his only chance:

Scribbles is a 1 to 2 year old male pitbull. Scribbles came into the shelter as a stray and he is in bad shape. He is quite emaciated and has open sores on his hind end, hips, and front ankle; the sores are likely due to being tied up on concrete without having any muscle or fat to cushion his bones.

Scribbles adores people- as you can see in his silly photos, he is all about getting some love. All he wants to do is snuggle. Scribbles does not seem accustomed to being around other dogs, but appears to like them. He doesn’t mind cats.

Scribbles needs to leave the shelter ASAP for a foster or forever home where he can get the food and TCL he deserves

If you can help Scribbles or would like to meet him, please email Natalie@phillypaws.org right away.

New foster parents who have dogs in their home will need to bring their dog to the shelter to meet Scribbles before they can be approved to foster him.

While waiting, he caught a cold and found himself in the Isolation Room along with the other sick cats. Problem is, it's very hard to get well in that environment. Pumpkin needs someone to foster him for a week or two. Upper respiratory infections aren't as bad as they sound--all he needs is his medication (provided free by the shelter), some good food and a warm place to sleep and he'll be good as new. Then he can find the forever home he truly deserves. If you think you can help this poor boy, please contact PAWSkitties@gmail.com.

Upper respiratory infections are contagious to other cats. Pumpkin Pie will have to be kept separate from them or in a covered crate. Dogs and other furry animals cannot contract his illness.

Please help us get the word out about this beautiful dog in need. She needs a foster or forever home prepared to help her with her separation anxiety:

Svetlana is a gorgeous two to four year-old Akita/German Shepherd mix. She is an affectionate and friendly little girl with a sweet face and a really beautiful coat.

Svetlana is very friendly and loves people; she has lived with children and other animals in her previous home.

Svetlana's one challenge is that she isn't used to being left alone and suffers some separation anxiety. She was adopted and returned because her adopters did not want to work through the problem with her.

Separation anxiety most often resolves in a few weeks with consistent help from humans, and Svetlana needs someone who will give her this chance and help her to adjust to a new home schedule.

Svetlana's shelter ID# is A06274913; please bring it with you if you come to the shelter to meet her.

This sweetheart was abandoned but she's still smiling--Gemini needs to leave the shelter right away. Please help us spread the word and get her out:

Gemini is an adorable 8 year-old pitbull. She is the smilingest dog, even at the shelter, which says a lot for her personality. Poor Gemini was surrendered because her owner was moving, but she isn't holding it against anyone and she loves everyone she meets.

Gemini is graying just a bit around her face but is full of life, with many more years of love to share. She loves going for walks and and behaves well on the leash. She also seems to be housebroken and to enjoy other dogs.

Let's give Gemini something to smile about--a forever home!

| My friend and I have several cats and kittens for adoption that we're fostering. We require vet references and a small adoption fee. All cats are neutered/spayed, have been tested, are up to date on their shots and have been treated for worms and fleas.

Please note, some of our cats are FIV positive. FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus) is very similar to HIV in humans; it is NOT easily shed to other cats. A positive cat cannot infect a negative cat by sharing a litter box or food and water. Please consider an FIV positive cat, many of these cats are so wonderful and have the ability to live a very long happy life.

Here are the pretty kittys we currently have available:

Sweeney and Lovey - Male gray tabby with white, and female tortie/calico (respectively). Brother and sister; approx 5-6 months old. FeLV/FIV negative. Very sweet, slightly shy - does very well with other cats.

Tasha - female tortie/siamese mix, 5 months old, FeLV/FIV negative. Very sweet, does very well with other cats.

Ripley - male gray semi-long hair, 5 months old, FeLV/FIV negative. Very sweet, does very well with other cats. Brother to Tasha.

Simon - male simaese mix (very unique looking), approx 2 years old. FeLV/FIV negative. Friendly, does very well with other cats.

Rockett - male black cat, approx 3-4 years old, FIV positive (FeLV negative), he does okay with other cats, but sometimes has a tendency to dominate, so our recommendation is that he is an only cat.

Frick - male black long hair, approx 2 years old, FeLV/FIV negative, semi-feral, but LOVES other cats and the indoors. You can't really pet Frick unless you catch him, then he will let you hold him (briefly) and he LOVES to be brushed when you can catch him.

Tortie - female tortie (hence her name), 2-3 years old, FeLV/FIV negative, very friendly and does well with other cats.

Bud - male black cat, approx 2-3 years old, FeLV/FIV negative, very friendly but would do best in a house without other cats (he loves to rule the roost!)

Little guy - male black kitten, approx 3-4 months old, FeLV negative, very friendly and loves other cats.

Little girl - female torbie, approx 5-6 months old, FeLV/FIV negative, very sweet, but a little shy. Would do okay in a house with other cats after an adjustment period.

Pud - BIG (20+ lbs) male black and white semi-long hair cat - approx 4 years old, FIV positive (FeLV negative). Pud looks like Sylvester and is VERY laid back - he just wants love.

Tuffy - male silver tabby, approx 3-4 years old, FIV positive (FeLV negative), super friendly and does well with other cats.

Snoop - male black cat, approx 3-4 years old, FIV positive (FeLV negative), special needs (he's a little neurotic and would very well being an only cat with someone who is home a lot)

Thanks! | If their own "population control" method worked than there would not be a deer population problem. Do you really think the deer know how much habitat they will lose each year?? | Actually, a controlled hunt is a very practical solution to a major problem. Deer DO NOT control their own population, especially NOT by how many babies they have. They do not have condoms or birth control pills, but plenty of hormones and evolutionary drive to reproduce. Deer have no natural predators left in this area. The only predators they have left are cars, hunters, and possibly a very hungry pack of coyotes. Control hunts are the only way to cull the population.

Decreasing the population is actually GOOD for the deer. As winter arrives, they will be starving to death because there are TOO MANY deer for the amount of food available. Also, as the population climbs, more will be hit by cars (hurting the animals and the people). Plus, as spring arrives, they will eat all your petunias - thus increasing conflicts between humans and wildlife.

Caring for animals is a great thing. I'm highly involved with animal rescue myself. However, you have to understand the difference between a dog freezing on the streets, and thousands of deer with their population numbers completely out of control. Its ok to feel bad for the deer, but bringing the population down to a natural level is actually better for their population. The babies will be much healthier in the spring. | Just to clear up some issues:

Update 11-18-08- Dane is still at the SPCA waiting so patiently for a great home to come along. He is very handsome and such a sweet boy- and he is looking good lately in his patriotic bandana! Come take Dane for a walk and fall in love!

Dane is an extremely handsome, white, muscular American Bulldog. He is three years young and a remarkable boy. His owners were no longer able to care for him. He does better in a house with children 16 years and older and with no cats. He gets along with some dogs but does not get along with dogs who challenge him so a home without other animals is ideal. He is very smart and loves attention. His owners report that he needs leash training but although he was a tad strong I had no difficulty. He knows how to sit , stay and give his paw. This is one good looking boy who needs a forever home. Come and meet Dane.

Meet Cornelius! He is a big teddy bear! Cornelius came to the shelter as a stray and is approx. 2 years old. He is such a love bug- He LOVES attention and is super friendly to everyone, including kids. He loves his treats and takes them nicely from your hand. He knows how to sit already too! Cornelius must have been kept outside sometimes, as his ears are being treated from fly bites with an ointment, but you would not know anything was wrong because he is a happy boy! And they are healing nicely and soon there will be no signs of any issue. Keeping dogs outside is not appropriate and not giving them vet care for injuries is even worse, so Cornelius is certainly better off finding a new loving home through the SPCA! Cornelius is a strong, large, young boy that needs exercise and active owners to get him out and about! But I imagine him being a couch potato in the home. He's fine around food and bones and is very tolerant of being poked, prodded and tugged on. He needs a home with no other animals but a home with kids would be great! Come and meet this boy, you will not be dissappointed!

Victoria is a beautiful brown and white, female pit bull terrier. We estimate her to be about 3 years old. She is such a sweet and loving dog that gets so excited when she actually gets out of her cage and gets company and pets from humans! She lives to just be held and loved. She doesn't bark at all at the shelter. Victoria would benefit with lots of love in either a foster or FURever home! She's cute as a button with her brown marking right over her eye! She likes to play and run around and just is an all-around wonderfully sweet girl. She seems to like other dogs but is a little reserved around loud and rambunctious ones and would do best in a home without small kids, as she is a little mouthy when she gets excited. She is good with people around her food bowl and her special bones and is already trained to the sit and down commands- I have to say that in the face of distraction she is remarkably obedient! She's very submissive to people, is gentle taking treats and adores being called a good girl. Please come and meet Victoria today- you won't be disappointed!!!

~~original post~~

This poor little guy has had quite a journey. He was originally found near Temple University by a college kid. A young guy in NE philly has been taking care of him since then and this weekend he came to our home (I thought he was my missing min pin). He really is sweet with both my kids (8 & 2) so I KNOW he has a family out there and we live in an apartment that doesnt allow pets ( we moved in since ours went 'missing') He hasn't snapped at my kids and my 2 year old even hand feeds him. He only peed once in our house. He is very deaf I would say probably completely and he has some obvious tumors. I would love very much to reunite him with his family. I will add pics tomorrow. I am worried that maybe his home is with someone who doesn't know about craigslist so please check with your neighbors. He is very old and I want the rest of his days to be calm.
Please don't flood my in box saying you want to adopt him. At this point the main focus is finding his real home.
Male is neuterd, female is not spayed. Both very friendly, housebroken, not declawed...but no problems with scratching. Male is orange stripe, and female is all white with cream tail and ears, and blue eyes.
Prefer to adopt out together. In my experience and through talking to pet professionals, I have found that cats are less destructive in pairs of 2 or more. Included are 1 cat carrier, 1 kitty condo, litter and food. New litter box will need to be purchased by owner, as mine has seen better days.
Heres the story...I acquired these two babies when it was just my boyfriend and I alone in an apartment. We had no other responsibilities. But now we have a fairly small house, a toddler, an infant, and our third baby on the way. We can no longer give them the attention that they need. They are great with cats, dogs, and children. It's truly heartbreaking to have to do this but I have to do what is best for them.
