Peaceful Living,a non profit organization is looking for loving persons willing to spend at least 3 hours a month being a friend to a person with a disability. Most of these individuals do not have a friend and many have little or no family contacts. Would you consider volunteering and making life happier for someone by doing a monthly activity such as going out to eat, shopping, bowling, movies, concerts, zoo, etc. or just hanging out with them. The individual pays their own expenses and you pay your own expenses. If you volunteer, that means there is one less friendless person in Montgomery County. Go to our website at www.peacefulliving.org and check Friendship Connection. | If you have a few minutes, please access the following survey and complete so I can include it in my thesis.

May 6 - May 21, 2009

This is a street families rehabilitation project, started in 2003 by Charles Ogutu. Initially the group used to advance loans to its members to do small business or assist their families but later they changed their focus to HIV/AIDS.

The international volunteer project will be held in Nairobi City for 2 weeks. Volunteers will come together to demonstrate the power of voluntary service in meeting critical needs of the local communities. The main objectives of the international workcamp are: Income generation and HIV/AIDS outreach program.
Volunteers will be working with the Haki Self group who are mostly Luo people - the largest tribe in Kenya, although there are also other ethnic groups residing within the area of Kibera. The local people are not well educated, especially the old generation, therefore some don't understand English, but local volunteers from the community are recruited to assist the international group with communication. Generally the people in this area are low income earners and live in poverty.
Kiswahili and Luo are the most spoken languages within the area. Kiswahili and English are spoken in the central business area and in Government offices, and are popular among the young professionals and educated youth.

Volunteer work: Volunteers will be involved in making jewelry and art work out of bone, providing home-based care to people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS, counseling, peer education and tuition.

Since 1996 this project have been organized together with the Michoacan University and an organization called Ecotonia. This year the volunteers will work with the people of the village to protect the sea turtle, by collecting eggs, burying them in the turtle camp, taking care of the baby turtles and doing some work collecting statistical information about the turtles.
In this frame a group of international volunteers will be involved in the project, as members of the staff, which means that the volunteers will be very involved in the project and the work.

The goal of this project is to protect the turtles and to help run the conservation activities of the protection turtle program promoting the international cooperation and international solidarity.
The main work consists in collecting turtle eggs, burying them again in a secure place, and transporting the baby turtles safely to the sea. This will be carried out mostly at night, together with the people from Colola Village. They are the people who will work with the group and explain what to do. For this camp we will need very motivated volunteers who really want to get involved with the work of protection of the turtle.
There are also some extra activities to do with the local people - to help improve the town like putting names of the streets, helping to arrange a multi-use playground and maybe some cleaning work.

The official language of the workcamp is English. Some Spanish would be appreciated.

Happiness for the poor in the Lunar New Year's days

January 7 - January 20, 2009

Tet (Feast of the First Morning) is the Lunar New Year of Vietnamese people. It is the most important traditional celebration each year in Vietnam. Vietnamese usually spend one or two weeks to visit their families, friends, and relatives, and beautiful places. They also go to pagodas and temples to pray for happiness, luck, success, good health, etc. with holy meanings for the New Year. They also make and enjoy very delicious food and cakes, especially “Chung” cake which is square sticky rice cake that all Vietnamese make only for Tet. However, there are still poor people and street children who do not have money for buying or making “Chung” cake.
The international volunteers will join a group of local people and volunteers to make "Chung" cake for the poor people and then give them out as happy gifts for the Lunar New Year. The volunteers are expected to help about 300 people on this special occasion. They will also take part in preparing and decorating houses of the poor people. The volunteers will organize special parties and give gifts to street children to wish them a Happy New Year for better lives and lots of luck.

The local host is an organization which works in many activities, such as cultural and environmental, to promote sustainable development and divulgate the richness of the indigenous communities in Mexico. In this project, a group of international volunteers is invited to participate in activities with the community called Mata de Platano, to help in a program that seeks to promote the creation of activities for sustainable development.

The volunteers will help in the construction and maintenance of a community center, called "La Casa del Volcan". The construction has already been started by the local people, but volunteers will help at the creation of a place that can receive tourists as a camping zone, since Mata de Platano is surrounded by very beautiful natural environment. Moreover, the group will gather some elements for the opening of a community museum.

Time Frame:

§ For three to seven/eight months beginning around Jan/Feb 2008

§ A love for Jesus and a desire to serve Him.

§ Junior High Focus - We are looking for some folks who will "specialize" by working with the Junior High groups who come to serve with us. If you desire to work with this age group in a creative way, please make sure you mention that in the application.

§ Stipend ($800/month).

§ guiding them to each site and restaurant; and

§ leading evening discussions/debriefs;

§ other stuff as needed.
In winter and spring, groups usually come for 1 to 2 days (weekends), during spring break and summer, they stay about 6 days. You're assigned to a group and then help them during the whole trip. When groups aren't in, you'll help with special projects and volunteer with our ministry partner organizations.
