<![CDATA[We had a dog that wouldn't stop barking. He would not stop barking for hours and I'm not kidding. Put a shock collar on him, he stopped barking IN 15 MINUTES and didn't bark excessively again. With a better collar he's allowed to bark a couple of times then the collar gives a beeping tone to warn him if he doesn't shut up, he's going to get zapped also, you can set the level of "stimulation" to just enough to get him to respond so you don't have to feel like your "giving him the chair". Cheaper collars don't have this feature. it's not like the collar continues to shock them all the time. There's not wanting to be cruel and then there's being stupid to the point of not doing what needs to be done to solve the problem. In our case the neighbors threatened to poison or shoot him if he didn't stop barking.(left an unsigned note) ]]>

It is a reflection on all of us who work in shelters and should they remain in the top 5o it will show others that little Rhode Island is pro active in helping animals in need. Friendly for a chihuahua. Big eater. Only likes other dogs after a few meetings, not ideal for dog park. He would rather sit on your lap or beside you all day. Will sleep in his crate or with you. He is fine with children, but the fewer the better. Preferrable 7 or older. He is extremely active if given the chance, but will be a couch potato if you are. Good with cats-but only if they are not afraid or mean, he thinks they are to play with. ]]>

<![CDATA[Update - New photos of Lila and her little puppy foster friend - you have no idea how far this girl has come - her foster mom has worked miracles - she knows her stuff but in the long run, it was love and patience and kindness that brought Lila around - she is wonderful - don't let her breed scare you - there's no more wonderful or gorgeous dog ever! Lila is a very lucky girl - she was in a home where she was not being treated very nicely by her owner and someone who knew him (and her) decided to save her - she's with one of our foster moms now in Providence and is just a great dog Lila is the perfect dog for anyone who wants a dog that will demonstrate unconditional loyalty and think the world revolves around their owner. She is anxious to please and just an absolute doll of a dog! Lila is completely housetrained, rides well in the car, and has made tremendous strides with her crating. Lila rides beautifully in the car. Lila continues to be wary around strangers. Her previous home was a nightmare, so she will often crouch to the ground when someone new approaches. The last few weeks have really helped Lila in this area. The more positive reactions she has with people, the more she is learning that her terrible life is over and she does not need to worry that people are going to hurt her anymore. Lila lives in a home with two other dogs and has had a few spats with them. However, when her foster Mom worked with her on some training techniques, Lila settled beautifully into the pack. Lila would do fine with another dog in her home as long as her future owner had experience with dogs and could mimic the structure that her current foster Mom gives her. Lila has a strong prey instinct, so we are going to say no cats for this girl. Lila currently lives in a home with a 10 year old boy whom she adores. We are not concerned about Lila hurting children, but we are concerned that children may hurt Lila. She has had a very difficult background so we want to ensure that any potential adopters have children who will be respectful of her. This dog deserves her Cinderella happy ending and we are hopeful that someone out there will fall in love with her mesmerizing eyes and spirit. This is one special little girl... I am very loyal and obedient. I respond to all the commands I know and I am housebroken. I have a lot of energy and enjoy playing and being with people, but I also do very well on my own and can be left alone for a long day without any problems. I am a GREAT watchdog and protector. I am also a clown and will do anything to for laughs. Although I am nearly perfect, I DO NOT get along with other dogs or cats. One dog in particular, which is unfortunately the other dog in my current home. I need to be someone’s only dog to be happy. I am very strong and dominant, two things that serve me well as a watchdog, but not as a companion to the old dog I currently live with. <![CDATA[No you just don't go to the Dr's when you are sick. It's called preventative care. With people and animals things can be detected and prevented before becoming serious health issues. And for all the people who have indoor cats that they think don't need shots. I used to believe that as well. For one, the rabies vaccine is the law. I had an indoor cat that killed a bat. The bat had to be tested for rabies, which it had. And the cat not being current on it's vaccine either had to be PTS or quarantined for 6 months at the local shelter to make sure it wasn't infected. Rabies is 100% fatal in humans and animals. Not something to mess around with. So yes shelters will check to see you animal is current on it's rabies vaccine. Just take your cat to the vet for a checkup and cat it's rabies shot current then you will have no problem adopting from a shelter. There is a lowcost clinic for $25 at Titan Pet Supply Store on Dec 6th.]]>

He has NOT seen a Vet, as there currently is no reason to (you do not go to the doctor generally unless needed, right?). <![CDATA[ I have a 10 month old English Bantam Bulldog, great dog but I can not control his excitement. I have a 2 1/2 yo son and a 1 1/2 yo son that love him very much but he is just so hyper that they both get knocked down and scratched by his excitement and I can not get him to stop. I have tried everything and I need some more options. We got him thinking he would be a mellow dog like the english bulldog but it has been 9 months and he has not changed but I refuse to get rid of him. There must be something I can do. I have has puppies before and none have given me half as much work as this one..lol.. Well that's about it and any advise would be great. I wanted to try a trainer but at $150-$200 for 3 hrs and X-mas around the corner in this economy it is just so hard to do. Thanks for all your help. ]]>

<![CDATA[Looking to Rehome: Complete operational Salt Water aquarium. 29 Gallon Eclipse ALL GLASS, not acrylic, aquarium. This is a complete system that is operating. For any of you that aren’t familiar with salt water systems, when you set up a new system you need to wait up to several weeks for a system to stabilize before adding fish. This system comes with EVERYTHING: all cleaning supplies including a handle with scrapers and scrubbers plus a mitt and assorted small pads, cleaning solution for the exterior of the tank, all chemicals for the fish and water, 2 siphon/vacuums, small hose for acclimating new fish, spare hose, 2 nets, extra salt, Formula One cube food, almost a full tray (have ONLY used Formula One), spare filter pads, and anything else that I may have overlooked. Now for the tank, it is a 29 gallon all glass Eclipse with hood. This system has the filtration system built into the hood; it uses activated carbon inside a pad and a Bio Wheel, and 2 florescent lights one of which is an Actinic Blue that really enhances the color of the fish and can be used if you want to add corals, there is also a spare white light. I also have a UV filter and pump in the system. Now for the live system; there is plenty of live rock and the system was originally set up with live sand. There is a pair of Percula Clown Fish (like the ones in Disney’s Finding Nemo), and a Spotted Hawk Fish (this is a VERY inquisitive fish that will actually follow you around the tank). To my dismay, I took her to a vet for her first check-up and shots and was told that she has a Luxating Patella and requires $1500 in surgery to correct. I've telephoned the woman whom I got the dog from and left a message concerning the same and, obviously, she has not called me back. I'm sure she was aware of this problem and did not disclose. <![CDATA[I have never had a problem housebreaking puppies, but I have dealt with high anxiety/seperation anxiety dogs. I found that if I increased the amount of exercise the dog got and made sure that he/she was tired when I had to crate them, they learned to go to sleep instead of getting stressed that you're leaving. I have a pug, so I know how high-energy they can be when they're babies. The other thing I can suggest that's worked for me in the past is trying not to fawn over the dog when it gets stressed. The more you try to comfort them by stroking or talking to them, the worse the problem gets. Keep in mind that puppies from pet stores can poop anywhere in their cage, so this is probably why your pug thinks its fine to poop in his crate. Housebreaking can be really tough with pet store pups, but hang in there! ]]>

<![CDATA[Hansel & Gretel, brother and sister have landed themselves in the pound :( They were picked up by animal control after being dumped on someone's property who did not want them. Their mom & dad were picked up as well. They are 2 of the cutest black & white kittens I have ever seen. Chubby little dolls with short soft plush fur. And Hansel actually has some brown fur mixed in his coat which makes him quite unique. They are also both EXTREMELY affectionate purrbugs ! Estimated to be about 4 months old. Their mom and dad were checked out by the vet today, got a clean bill of health and are negative for FIV/FELV. Kittens appear very healthy as well but they have not received any vetcare yet. There is no fee to adopt the kittens but there is a $25(per kitten) spay/neuter deposit required if you would like to use your own vet. You get that back after having the kittens fixed by 6 months of age and the shelter does follow up. It would be great if this adorable brother and sister pair could stay together, but we will split them. Looking for someone that is able to provide a vet reference so I know they will be taken care of properly and renters need landlord permission. A vet reference means that you have a cat or dog now or a cat or dog in the past that was fixed, kept up to date on shots and provided routine vet care throughout it's life. And if you're too cheap to pay a rehoming fee of say $100 then I guess you're going to be feeding them Kibbles and Bits from the grocery store too! And all breeds are different, some are high energy, don't take a dog just because it's free just to have to rehome it again in January after you find out you don't have time for it, it's not housebroken, and it chews things! The sad thing is you'd probably be the ones asking for the rehoming fee if you did have to give it up! If you want a dog, take your time to figure out what sort of breed you want (p.s. not all little dogs are the same!) And if you really want to adopt, then do it, but find out as much as you can about the dog first, to make sure it will fit into your family. Please do NOT just try to get a free dog before Chirstmas, rushing is the worst thing to do. Make sure you can give the dog a forever home! Sometimes finding the right dog, takes time. Other times it comes sooner than expected (like with my own puppy), just be prepared. And for goodness sake, it's called high quality dog food, if it comes from the grocery store, it is not.
