Extensive training and program support provided to all advocates. Background check and references required. Must be at least 21 years old and have a good driving record and reliable transportation. Male volunteers and bilingual volunteers especially encouraged to apply. It is the oldest system of personal development in the world, encompassing the entire body, mind and spirit. It is the union between a person's own consciousness and the universal consciousness. The classical techniques of Yoga date back more than 5,000 years. The word Yoga means "to join or yoke together," and it brings the body and mind together into one harmonious experience.
Ayurveda is the 5000 years old Indian health care system, widely practiced, in time with the times. "Ayur" in Sanskrit means "life", "Veda" means "science". It is a perfect Science of health and longevity. This holistic science is the knowledge of complete balance of the body, mind and spirit, including the emotions and psychology, on all levels. It includes in its consideration, longevity, rejuvenation and self-realization therapies through herbs, diet, exercise, yoga, massage, aromas, tantras, mantras, and meditation. According to Ayurvedic tradition, health is the balance of elements air, earth, fire, and water, and illness is an excess or deficiency of any particular element. Ayurveda treats illness at its source, rather than at the level of symptoms, and helps an individual to take responsibility for their own health and well being. Ayurveda is also known as 'Ashtanga Veda' (the word literally means 'Eight branches of knowledge') as it is divided into eight specialized branches.
The volunteers will be learning the Basics of Yoga and Ayurveda in these three weeks of the project. Every day, there will be topics covered by the master (the person in charge of yoga and ayurveda classes), which will be practiced by the volunteers. Yoga will be practiced every day. Apart from that, volunteers will also help at the herbal garden and the nearby school.

Education is the key to reducing animal suffering. I started updating this website with animal-related news because I got to see images of what happens to animals hidden away from our sheltered city lives.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The more people know what animals go through, the more people will refrain from buying products which will further increase animal suffering e.g. fur / fur-lined outercoats.
PART 2
Do you or if you know of anyone who know Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Farsi, or any other language ? These are enormous markets that not exposed to the cruelty involved in the animal trade, and also, the animal organizations have not been able to penetrate into these markets deep enough. Try to enlist people who know such language to start blogs / facebook and myspace accounts to spread the message around.

PART 3
Are you or anyone you know considering buying fur or fur-lined sweaters like the picture below ? Please don't as more animals will be cruelly tortured and killed in order to obtain the fur. A city of Joy and Love, Grandeur and Glory... Kolkata alias Calcutta is full of life and bustle, verging on the chaotic as traditional occupations rub shoulders with ultra modern industries. Kolkata is India's second largest city, the capital of West Bengal and formerly, the capital of British India (1772-1912); it is a city with a great deal of charm - its imperial monuments, strong cultural and religious flavour.
However it is also suffering from a terrible lack of hygiene, illiteracy and unemployment are rampant, and the first to suffer from these poor living conditions are the children. In an effort to bring a bit of joy back to the faces of the street and orphan children of Calcutta, international group of volunteers together with local NGOs will organise activities to entertain and open the minds of the children to the outside world.

In Viet Nam, festivals are usually organized for poor children, street children, children living with HIV/AIDS, disadvantaged children, etc. and they receive presents such as candy, new clothes, books and leisure activities to make them happy and compensate for their hard life.
International and local volunteers will join together to make beautiful gifts for the children in the National Pediatric Hospital, welfare centers, street children and poor children who live in the Fisher Village. All of these children really need our help. They live in low life conditions and have to help their parents earn money since the age of 5 or 6. They do not have chance to go to school. The volunteers will plan and organize the Children’s Day festival for these less fortune kids in and around Hanoi, and give them presents.

1•••INTRODUCTION•••
We all know that the United States is a country of incredible diversity. The contemporary American family often includes a mix of races, nationalities, sexual orientations and religions.

The winter holiday season is arguably the largest celebration of family and religious traditions in the United States. During this time of the year, American families decorate their homes according to their traditions, displaying the rich diversity found here.

2•••ABOUT THE PROJECT•••
Janine Mapurunga’s latest project is a photo essay that will explore the diversity found in contemporary American homes, specifically focused on the varieties of holiday family traditions in the United States.

With this goal in mind, the photographer will create portraits of families in their homes with their holiday decorations. She may also choose to briefly interview family members about family structure and family history.

The final product will be a photo essay that includes several family portraits, each paired with a short text explaining family dynamics and a brief family history.

3•••ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER•••
Janine Mapurunga got her first camera at age thirteen and by age twenty she worked as a full-time freelance photographer. She left her home country of Brazil at an early age and has traveled extensively to follow her projects. At age twenty-three Janine was the first woman to teach photography at the Sacramento City College. She holds a bachelors in Cultural Anthropology from UC Davis and is currently pursuing a masters in Visual Culture at the University of Barcelona. Fascinated by the human condition, she specializes in portraiture and photo essays. Her time is balanced between producing images for editorials, weddings and advertising, and pursuing documentary and social projects.

Forte International Exchange Association (FIEA) is a State-Department recognized student exchange program based in Washington, DC. Since 2000, we have brought nearly 2000 international students to the US to study in public schools and experience American life and culture. We are currently seeking families to host students starting in the Spring of 2008. These students are selected for our program based on high academic achievement, strong English abilities, and interest in American culture. Host families are eligible for a modest $50/month tax deduction, but the real rewards are intangible: exposing your family to another culture, sharing your home and family life with a visitor from abroad, and making a personal investment in global cooperation and understanding.

Host families come in all styles and forms, but they are all part of the process that leaves students and families feeling culturally enriched with a larger picture of the world.

The area is an agricultural settlement and the region grows paddy, coconuts, arecanuts, black pepper, vanilla, exotic varieties of mangoes, exotic varieties of bananas and the famous tasty cashew nuts. Over a period of time the region has been facing a lot of water shortage and the region now is facing a receding agriculture practice as a result of the shortage of water.

Year 2003 was the beginning of an initiative to implement rainwater harvesting awareness programmes in the form of trying to set up a rainwater harvesting model in the region. Several volunteer projects were organized with the rainwater harvesting theme, and almost successfully completed such model in one of the villages of Moodabidri. Volunteers who participated in the workcamp dug hundreds of trenches to

This is a street families rehabilitation project, started in 2003 by Charles Ogutu. Initially the group used to advance loans to its members to do small business or assist their families but later they changed their focus to HIV/AIDS.

The international volunteer project will be held in Nairobi City for 2 weeks. Volunteers will come together to demonstrate the power of voluntary service in meeting critical needs of the local communities. The main objectives of the international workcamp are: Income generation and HIV/AIDS outreach program.
Volunteers will be working with the Haki Self group who are mostly Luo people - the largest tribe in Kenya, although there are also other ethnic groups residing within the area of Kibera. The local people are not well educated, especially the old generation, therefore some don't understand English, but local volunteers from the community are recruited to assist the international group with communication. Generally the people in this area are low income earners and live in poverty.
Kiswahili and Luo are the most spoken languages within the area. Kiswahili and English are spoken in the central business area and in Government offices, and are popular among the young professionals and educated youth.

Volunteer work: Volunteers will be involved in making jewelry and art work out of bone, providing home-based care to people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS, counseling, peer education and tuition.

The project seeks to bring people of various cultures together to build bridges of understanding, reconciliation, and peace. The long term goal of the project is to prepare youth to make positive contributions to their future and society through the values of understanding, helping, contributing tolerance, and respectful coexistence. These goals are achieved through education, awareness, youth empowerment and international volunteer projects.
The volunteers will work in a village called "Eish Al-Ghurab". This village was an Israeli military base. After the Israeli soldiers left the village a year and a half ago, the municipality took the place and now they are trying to carry out different projects there. They started to build a kindergarten, a parking, youth houses, gardens, a hospital, etc. The volunteers will help the municipality of Bethlehem in achieving the projects they’re working on. The volunteers will work in this area along with the people from the municipality, taking up different tasks every day, such as painting, farming, cleaning, etc.
The volunteer project will be running at Christmas time in Bethlehem, the best place to celebrate Christmas in. The volunteers will have the opportunity to celebrate Christmas with the Palestinians, sharing their celebration and solidarity.
Project language: English
Cultural activities: The afternoons will be used to give volunteers an intercultural learning experience, with a focus on showing them the Palestinian culture within the context of the occupation and hopes for the future. This will involve visits to refugee camps in Bethlehem, visiting the associations in the city, tours of places of interest, lectures, and most important, interaction with the local people. The volunteers will be able to visit the AICafe where they can watch documentary films about the situation in Palestine and the Middle East. They will also have the opportunity to speak with Palestinian politicians and authors to try to find the answers of all the questions they want to ask. The volunteers will also have the opportunity to visit other cities in the West Bank, like Ram Allah and Hebron.
Accommodation: In a rented apartment in the village "Eish Al-Ghurab", where the volunteers can stay all together in one place. The girls and the guys will stay in separate rooms.
Location: Bethlehem is considered a central hub of Palestinian cultural and tourism industries. The city has significant value for Christians as it is considered the birthplace of Jesus of Nazareth according to the Gospels. Bethlehem is also home to one of the largest Palestinian Christian communities in the Middle East. In addition, Bethlehem has three Palestinian Refugee Camps (Dhisha, Al-Azza and Aaida). The construction of the Israeli apartheid wall has had a severely negative impact on Bethlehem politically, socially, and economically. The wall runs along the northern side of the town's built-up area, within meters of houses in 'A'ida refugee camp on the one side, and the Jerusalem on the other.

Although it remains among the most traditional areas of the country, it is also the poorest and less developed part in terms of infrastructure or industry; creating a huge rural exodus and migration from the Isan inhabitants to Bangkok. The Khueang Nai District administration wants to dynamize the Deng Mor rural areas and stimulate English learning through the international volunteers’ presence. Since 1996 this project have been organized together with the Michoacan University and an organization called Ecotonia. This year the volunteers will work with the people of the village to protect the sea turtle, by collecting eggs, burying them in the turtle camp, taking care of the baby turtles and doing some work collecting statistical information about the turtles.
In this frame a group of international volunteers will be involved in the project, as members of the staff, which means that the volunteers will be very involved in the project and the work.

The goal of this project is to protect the turtles and to help run the conservation activities of the protection turtle program promoting the international cooperation and international solidarity.
The main work consists in collecting turtle eggs, burying them again in a secure place, and transporting the baby turtles safely to the sea. This will be carried out mostly at night, together with the people from Colola Village. They are the people who will work with the group and explain what to do. For this camp we will need very motivated volunteers who really want to get involved with the work of protection of the turtle.
There are also some extra activities to do with the local people - to help improve the town like putting names of the streets, helping to arrange a multi-use playground and maybe some cleaning work.

The official language of the workcamp is English. Some Spanish would be appreciated.

Who is FUR? Friends of Unwanted Rabbits
(FUR) is a rabbit rescue organization founded in 2004. We are dedicated to
finding forever, loving, indoor homes for abandoned and neglected rabbits
dumped at local area shelters. Our goal is to increase public awareness of
these intelligent, social creatures as house pets. We are committed to improving
the lives of companion rabbits through education on proper rabbit care. We
support spaying/neutering rabbits to improve overall health, behavior and
to decrease overpopulation.

Why does FUR exist? Each year thousands
of rabbits are abandoned at local area shelters. Rabbits are the 3rd most
frequently discarded animals at shelters and the most often overlooked. Most
are discarded by their owners due to a lack of understanding and knowledge
of these highly intelligent creatures. Others are dumped by irresponsible
breeders. In the recent past 99% of the rabbits discarded at the Sacramento
County Animal Care & Regulation were euthanized. Since its inception, FUR
has rescued over 400 rabbits and decreased the euthansia rate to appoximately
2%.

housed at two local area PetSmart Adoption Centers. Some of our rabbits stay
in foster homes until they are adopted and are not housed at PetSmart due
to their size and/or special needs. Volunteers care for the rescued rabbits
housed at PetSmart and provide exercise and socialization time outside their
cages. The rabbits are adopted to carefully screened indoor homes by FUR volunteers.

Right now TeamFUR is in need for volunteers who can stop by to hold, feed, pet, clean and care-take for rabbits. The time commitment is at least 1 1/2 to 2 hours a week on dedicated day (for example: each Monday). Volunteers are always welcome to spend more time with the rabbits but this is the minimum time it takes to care for them. We also need people who can help coordinate fundraisers or make copies of educational materials to hand out to the public at both the shelter and at our adoption events. Also we are in need of a few well experienced house rabbit volunteers that can help us make follow up calls after we adopt and to help answer our message line. Please contact TeamFUR at (916) 710-0105 today.

Rabbits are easily bored in an empty cage. They are very playful and toys are psychologically stimulating. They love toys that can be tossed, chewed on, or dug in. The dollar tree stores often sell large cylinder and balls for cats that can also be given to rabbits to play with. The rule of thumb is that the plastic needs to be hard, if a human can crush the plastic with their hand a rabbit can crush it with their teeth. For more information on the types of toys rabbits need or to make a donation call FUR at 916-710-0105 or email us at teamfur@gmail.com
|

Sacramento Court Appointed Special Advocate Program, Inc. (CASA) recruits and trains community volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children. As a CASA, you will work one-on-one with a child/youth advocating on their behalf in the juvenile court and assisting them in obtaining all necessary services while they are dependents in the foster care system.

The ultimate goal of a CASA is to help the child find a safe and permanent home, whether it would be a return to their families, adoption or guardianship. A minimum of one year and 15 to 20 hours a month (on average) is required. There is flexibility as to when you spend time with a child as there is no set schedule.

Extensive training and program support provided to all advocates. Background check, volunteer application, interview and references required. Must be at least 21 years old and have a good driving record and reliable transportation. Male volunteers and bilingual volunteers especially encouraged to apply. No prior legal or social work experience required just the desire and ability to work with these kids and the court system is necessary. This is a great opportunity for active retirees, students and working professionals.

Prior to being accepted into training, SCASA holds mandatory orientation sessions. You need to attend only one of these sessions. These sessions will provide general information about the CASA mission as well as a brief introduction of the topics to be covered during the required 35 hours of training. Our next training class begins 3/31/09 and will be held Tue and Thurs evenings from 6-9pm for a 5 week period.

Topics covered during training course include Advocacy and the Law, Court Process, Roles of the Attorney and the Social Worker, Cultural | | |
