<![CDATA[ Hello! I am a California attorney, former journalist and English teacher, and a professional SAT + ACT Critical Reading and Writing tutor. I have tutored students at all levels for nearly 10 years. At any given time I have approximately 6-8 ACT students in the San Diego area. Each session is a private one-on-one meeting (sessions with two are possible). The approach is as follows: For the English Exam: The approach is split into two prongs addressing the two skills tested on this portion of the exam: 1) Usage and Mechanics - The approach for the English exam questions testing these skills requires a memorization of the stock 35-40 punctuation, grammar and usage, and sentence structure rules that have been featured on this exam since its inception. The grammatical errors they test NEVER CHANGE and as such are ENTIRELY PREDICTABLE. In our sessions, we draw out each grammar rule together through our exercises. We will then slowly and meticulously discuss the red flags that will be showcased in the question so that you will know come exam day that they are testing that exact rule. We will then commit time to understanding that rule thoroughly, create a mneumonic device for it, add it to our list and move on to the next rule. In your homework you will review all of our rules. There is no excuse for being surprised by a particular grammar rule on the exam - they are all predictable and can easily be identified with the appropriate strategy. 2) Rhetorical Skills - There are another 30 or so stock rhetorical rules testing strategy, organization and style that need to be applied in a fashion most appealing to the graders. A similar process is used to master these skills and the exam here is similarly formulaic. I will hand you a formula to use come exam day, words to sprinkle in, rhetorical devices to sprinkle in, and style cues to sprinkle in. The key is racking up the points in the areas of the most concern to the graders. In addition to understanding, memorizing, and applying the approaches above, it is a must that every student of mine receive coaching on the proper way to approach multiple choice questions, how to master the process of elimination technique, and learn fully how to get an answer even if you don't know why the correct answer is correct. YOU CAN BACK INTO AN ANSWER WITHOUT THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE SKILL THEY ARE TESTING. For the Reading Exam: My Reading Comp approach is my pride and joy. I also teach Reading Comprehension for the LSAT, GMAT, SAT, and MCAT. Each of these tests have different eccentricities but the fact remains - there is a tried and true approach that works on this section of the exam. I have med students, law students, business school students that seek out my assistance solely for reading comp. The approach will be explained in our sessions in detail but here's a brief account. I divide my approach into two prongs: 1) The Read - The read needs to be attacked with the appropriate mindset - YOU ARE READING FOR STRUCTURE. If you approach the read with a local approach or an overly global approach you are at a disadvantage. Within the read I will give you targeted, but minimalist notetaking strategies to use. Additionally there are other things we are mindful of during the read which I will reveal in our sessions. 2) The Questions - The questions need to be approached in the APPROPRIATE ORDER and they need to be addressed differently depending upon whether they are a stated or inference question. Within stated and inference questions there are sub-types of questions that have their own unique strategy. All of this will be addressed in the session. All I ask is that you absorb, then understand, then memorize, then repeatedly apply the approaches to every individual question and THE RESULTS WILL FOLLOW WITH PRACTICE. Again on this portion of the exam there are test taking strategies that can eliminate decoy answers and back into answers without a perfect understanding of the material or question. For the Writing Exam: Simply put, there is no excuse for not getting a near perfect, if not perfect score on this portion of the exam. The grading is entirely formulaic and the graders seek certain traits of an essay. I will simply hand you the formula, the organization, the rhetorical devices, the style cues, and certain vocabulary words to sprinkle in and then your job will be to apply it to each prompt you encounter in your practice and then do the same on test day. Even students of average writing abilities can excel on the writing portion. The ACT subscribes to a formula and thus can be beaten if a student learns the proper way to study for it. My students learn the proper way to study without wasting time poring over question after question. Instead we focus on the quality of your concentration and understanding of the material. The speed will come. The accuracy must first be established. My approach is uniquely tailored to the strengths and weaknesses of the individual student, unlike commercial courses which often leave a student feeling confused. All I ask of the student is to do the homework I assign and bring the same dedication that I bring to each session. <![CDATA[I am a California attorney and GMAT Verbal and Writing tutor of five years and have had hundreds and hundreds of students. I have created a streamlined, meticulous approach to the GMAT that: 1) utilizes a methodical step by step approach to each the reading, notetaking, answering of every different type of Reading Comprehension question (within both micro and macro questions, there are inference and stated questions. And within each of these variations there are further variations on the question types). 2) creates an in depth, yet easily cognizable "stock list" of the most commonly tested grammar rules on the Sentence Correction portion - this portion of the test is ENTIRELY predictable and many points can be accumulated here. I have devised methods that you will use on the exam to spot "red flags" that should jog your mind that a particular grammar infraction is being tested. 3) breaks down each "Argument" type into the major eight categories and employs a distinct, yet simplified approach to each of these eight types. Do not answer every argument question in the same fashion. Together we will work on the exact approach you'll need for main point, assumption, strengthen, weaken, inferences, reasoning, evaluation, and parallel questions. 4) employs a tried and true formula to the Essay portion that facilitates an easier way to achieve 6-level diction, style, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, device usage, organization, and theses. (my students simply go in with a set formula and apply it robotically on the exam to maximize points on the new scaling system). The grading is entirely predictable and we will simply inject the proven "point accumulators" into your essays. 5) Works on the overall approach to the exam including the order in which you should take particular questions and the GMAT system of increasing or decreasing difficulty. As you probably know, earlier questions on the exam are much more important to your overall score - we will discuss this in detail in our first session. Fact is, despite popular opinion, this test is predictable and you can beat it. I've honed my approach over the years to where we have become very successful at picking apart the unique decoys of each section and the most common and attractive wrong answers. The approach in this area is proven time and again. I know GMAT Verbal preparation process can be frustrating. Usually commercial courses don't deliver on their promises or enable you to understand the concepts at the level needed to ace this exam. I believe there is a reason for this and as such, I tailor my approach to the intricate reasons my students are getting questions wrong. This is a method you seldom, if ever, will receive from a commercial tutoring service. Frankly, you don't often get it from other tutors either, as I've had many students over the years who have "defected" from another tutor to come use my approach. The reality is many commercial courses simply don't have a viable approach to Reading Comp and their Sentence Correction, Arguments and Writing approaches are convoluted and unnecessary. My students always have success, if they work hard that is. We will pinpoint what it is that is tripping you up and will hone in on the exact areas that need serious scrutinizing. My satisfaction truly comes from your growth. The GMAT is a large portion of the admissions process for business school - do not skimp on the preparation. Whether we work together or not, if Verbal and Writing is your pet peeve area, I recommend selecting a tutor that specializes only in Verbal and Writing prep, rather than working with one who tutors for various exams and portions of this exam. Select a tutor who knows the GMAT inside and out, a tutor whose sole focus is on these portions of the exam. As you'll see below, my price is consistently more than HALF that of commercial course private tutors. The reason for this is not because you'll get inferior preparation - it's because I find it obscene to charge that much for GMAT prep. I am an attorney, meaning I attended law school and understand how costly it can be to obtain an education. My goal isn't to add to that - it's to give you exactly what you need at a reasonable price and then send you on your way to apply your talents. Here is a breakdown of what each commercial course charges for private tutoring sessions: Kaplan: $153/hr Princeton Review: $125 - $375/hr My rate is $85/hr. Additionally, I'm not anchored to the clock. If we're five minutes over, I never rush my students out the door - I finish the strategy we're learning. About ten days ago I listened to Jeremy and did the exercises he told me to do to so I could develop some muscle that I wasn’t using. He told me about the muscles abilities and the order to train them. I started with isolating the lower Pecs and then I moved into adding repetitions on some chest exercises I had not done. I did this at the beginning and for the first few days I was still able to press my 405 lbs without fatigue. Today, 8/17/09, I did two reps at 405 lbs with ease and took it up to 415 lbs. <![CDATA[The Law School Admission Test, administered in June, October, December, and February is used as a critical factor in assessing the law school applicants. Aside from an unscored writing sample which could be used as a tiebreaker, the exam contains five 35-minute sections of multiple-choice questions in three different item types, four of which contribute to the test taker's score. (An experimental section is used to try out new questions.) I am an educator with formal training in logic, offering tutoring in the following portions of the exam, both of which were still present on a section of the regular general GRE prior to 2002 before being replaced by two written essays on the analysis of issues and critique of arguments. LSAT questions are typically designed to evaluate thinking skills which have been acquired over a long period of time and are not related to any specific field of study, however, are totally coachable. Analytical Reasoning Questions (aka Logic Games - One Section): Designed to measure your ability to understand a structure of relationships and to draw logical conclusions about that structure. You are asked to make deductions from a set of statements, rules, or conditions that describe relationships among entities such as persons, places, things, or events. Common question types in this section involve grouping, sequencing, matching, selection, distribution, and hybrid games. Logical Reasoning Questions (aka Critical Reasoning - Two Sections): These are designed to evaluate your ability to understand, analyze, criticize, and complete a variety of arguments. Each requires you to read and comprehend a short passage, then answer up to two questions about it. These will normally be addressing strengthening/weakening aspects, author's/passage's main assumptions, principles, and ideas, forms of argument, resolving discrepancies or paradoxes, conclusions/deductions, and parallel reasoning. I am not involved with training for the Reading and Writing sections of the LSAT. The aspects of interaction with an unconventional (non-law background) tutor can't be underestimated in aiding to prepare you better for the exam. When you write, please specify a little background information including for instance what score range you are trying to get, and what prep books you have been using. I can work with you through some of the popular titles out in the market to help build a good level of proficiency. Since I am not a specialist I charge only $20/hour for my service.
