| POSITION: Major Gifts Officer

ORGANIZATION: Equality California (EQCA)

LOCATION: San Diego, California

WEBSITE: www.eqca.org

ORGANIZATION: Founded in 1998, Equality California (EQCA) has spent more than a decade of building a state of equality in California. Over the past 11 years, EQCA has strategically moved California from a state with extremely limited legal protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals to a state with some of the most comprehensive civil rights protections in the nation.

EQCA works to achieve equality and secure legal protections for LGBT people. To improve the lives of LGBT Californians, EQCA sponsors legislation and coordinates efforts to ensure its passage, lobbies legislators and other policy makers, builds coalitions, develops community strength and empowers individuals and other organizations to engage in the political process.

Since its founding, EQCA has successfully passed more than 52 pieces of civil rights legislation for the LGBT community – more than any other statewide LGBT organization in the nation.

Working in partnership with California’s LGBT Legislative Caucus, EQCA is committed to building a better future for all Californians by protecting youth, strengthening families and empowering communities. Each year at the Capitol, EQCA monitors thousands of bills and leads the state’s efforts to defeat legislation that could have a negative impact on LGBT Californians and their families.

EQCA, on behalf of its members, was an organizational plaintiff in the historic lawsuit asking the California Supreme Court to strike down state law that bars same-gender couples from marriage. In court, EQCA has also successfully defended California’s domestic partnership laws and related state policies that have been implemented in response to EQCA-sponsored legislation. With the California Supreme Court ruling on May 26, 2009 that let Prop. 8 stand, the vital work of EQCA is now more important than ever as the organization looks at ballot options and strategies for 2012.

EQCA is headquartered in San Francisco and has regional offices in Sacramento, Palm Springs and Los Angeles. Currently there are approximately 20 staff members across the three offices, as well as eight Regional Field Managers.

The following organizations are affiliated with EQCA:

Equality California Institute (EQCAI) educates LGBT people and the public at large about issues impacting the LGBT community and our allies. EQCAI empowers and organizes individuals, communities and allied groups to work proactively for fairness, equality and justice.

EQCAI leads ‘Let Californian Ring,’ a public education campaign to open hearts and minds about the freedom to marry, and the Equality Alliance, a broad coalition of LGBT and non-LGBT groups working together to further human rights. The Institute also directs the LGBT Health and Human Services Network and is a sponsor of the California Transgender Leadership Summit and Queer Youth Advocacy Day.

Equality California Political Action Committee (EQCA PAC) endorses fair-minded candidates and supports the campaigns of policy leaders who advocate for full equality for all Californians. EQCA PAC also supports political campaigns that promote the fair treatment of all Californians and fights misguided efforts that could delay our progress toward true equality.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: The Major Gifts Officer will report to the Eric Harrison, Director of Development. The position works closely with Managing Director Jim Carroll, and the Development Team, as well as the Executive Director, Geoff Kors.

The responsibilities of the teachers include; locating families to host the students in his/her group, 1 per home, teaching ESL for 3 hours a day, 4 days per week, (curriculum provided) and accompanying students on local field trips daily.
