The Developmental Neuroimaging Laboratory at the UCSD Center for Human Development is conducting cutting-edge research into the relationship between brain development and social behavior. Our current studies examine how children develop their extraordinary abilities to process socially relevant information when viewing other people’s faces. To do this, we examine your child’s brain activity while s/he is viewing pictures or movies of faces and other objects in an MRI scanner. Safety is our highest priority and we have designed our procedures so that the MRI scanner is safe for your child. We conduct all of our studies at the UCSD Center for Functional MRI, a world-renowned research facility for brain imaging research.

We need your child’s help for our research studies. We are seeking healthy, 6-12 year old children and 13-16 year old teens to be participants in our studies. Qualified volunteers will be paid for their participation in our research studies. Your child’s contributions may also help us understand conditions where problems in social interactions may arise, such as in autism and other developmental disorders.

Please contact Jarnet at 858-822-4953 or email at jarnet@ucsd.edu to receive more information and to volunteer as a research participant. It has the features of a modern, forward-looking society which are complemented by a close connection to beautiful nature.
The population of the Reykjavik Capital Area is about 200,000. Want to volunteer in a middle school setting where the entire campus is high achieving, respectful, and results-oriented? Want to see the sense of pride in students’ faces as they work harder and achieve at greater levels than they ever thought possible? Want to work with a team of outstanding educators that is successfully narrowing the achievement gap in San Diego’s underserved communities?

KIPP Adelante Preparatory Academy, a public charter middle school located in Downtown San Diego, is seeking volunteers with string instrument experience to coach our students in learning to read music and play the violin, viola, cello and bass. All of our 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students participate in our orchestra program under the leadership of Thomas Duncan, our Orchestra Director, and he is in need of volunteers to work one-on-one with students, helping them in learning to read music, play with good posture and position, and improve their playing skills in general. Each year we showcase the hard work of our students at a spring concert at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in beautiful Balboa Park, where their efforts (and yours!) show that students from any background can learn to express themselves through music. Our school day runs weekdays from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM, providing many windows of opportunity for volunteers to help out when it fits into their schedule.

If you are in need of volunteer hours for your major, or are just interested in helping our student’s musical abilities blossom by sharing your love and knowledge of music, please contact Mr. Duncan at the email address listed at the top of this post.

A little bit about KIPP Adelante Preparatory Academy:

The mission of KIPP Adelante Preparatory Academy is to ensure that our students develop the academic skills, intellectual habits, and character traits needed to succeed in top quality high schools, colleges, and the competitive world beyond.

KIPP Adelante’s core values are: Respect, Responsibility, Achievement, Constant Learning, and Teamwork.

In August 2003, KIPP Adelante opened its doors to 90 fifth-graders from Barrio Logan and surrounding areas of San Diego. The school has expanded one grade level each year and is currently at its full capacity of approximately 340 students in 5th to 8th grade. In 2006, the school was named a California Distinguished School. In 2007, KIPP Adelante was recognized with the National Title I Distinguished Schools Recognition Award for being the one school in California that most narrowed the achievement gap. That same year, the school was also recognized in State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O Connell’s Top 10 Year-End List of Education Accomplishments. KIPP Adelante was recently named by the National Center for Urban School Transformation as a winner of the 2009 National Excellence in Urban Education Award.

Thank you for your interest in helping us to develop our student’s musical abilities and appreciation of music in general.

Musically yours,

Thomas Duncan
Orchestra Director
KIPP Adelante Preparatory Academy

Jewish Family Service of San Diego is a social service agency with over 50 programs and services available to all people regardless of religion. There are a few programs that are specifically geared towards the Jewish population. Jewish BIGPals is one of these programs.

Each one of us remembers someone special - a neighbor, teacher, relative or friend - who broadened our horizons and brought a little magic into our lives. Maybe it was the person who taught you to throw straight, or just listened. It might have been someone who helped you make a good decision instead of a bad one. Just a few hours a couple times a month can make a big difference in a child's life and be a rewarding experience. Mentoring is one of the most meaningful ways you can volunteer because you can significantly impact the life of a young person. No special skills are needed . . . just the willingness to care and spend time with someone who needs you. Mentors are everyday heroes who transform a life or a community through their commitment to make a difference.

The children on the waiting list for a Big Pal have increased recently. There are currently 20 children waiting. Mentors are needed all throughout San Diego County. You can make a huge difference in the life a child who needs you- inquire today about this meaningful program!

If interested in volunteering with Jewish BIGPals, please contact Gabriela Halpern, Volunteer Coordinator at (858) 637-3051 or e-mail her at gabrielah@jfssd.org for more information. Jewish BIGpals must be Jewish, willing to make a one-year commitment to their little pal, and submit to background check and interviews with Program Staff.
Hello-

Thank you for taking the time to read my ad.

I am looking for someone who could volunteer their time to helping me set up a foundation, I am assuming non-profit, although I do not know much about how all this works to help with the elderly in San Diego. I want to include everything from helping families who deperatly want to keep their elderly loved ones at home but find the finances difficult to manage to making wishes of the elderly come true. I am not saying anything negative about nursing homes but I think the majority of the people I have interviewed would much rather be at home if at all possible. I know I would.

This has been a growing concern for families because people are living longer and I believe families panic. I know I did when I was responsible for my grandmother. I could write a book about the experiences I had in just a year that I had to deal with it all until she passed away. From family fighting to just absolutely not knowing if I, not only could do this task that was given to me basically overnight but knowing how to do it without second guessing every move you make, as well as trying to work and live somewhat of a normal life myself.

This is not an ad for Hospice, just a group that might be able to provide support and hopefully money to those who really need it.

If you can help please email me and I can give you more ideas of what my plans are.

Thank you,
Gina
Thanks to Education Volunteers, the Helen Woodward Animal Center helps both people and animals by educating children about pet responsibility. The volunteer program is both fun and hard work. Applicants must be in 9th – 12th grade. Volunteers need to have some experience and a desire to work with children in PreK – 5th grade. They must be mature, dependable, be able to follow directions, work independently, and display introductory leadership and teamwork skills. The most successful volunteers are committed, enthusiastic and experienced with children.

April Critter Camp takes place April 5th-9th for PreK-5th grade. Volunteer shifts are from 8:00-4:00, Monday - Friday. This is a smaller camp; therefore we have more flexibility with scheduling volunteer shifts. It would be great to have volunteers commit to working all five camp days. If that is not a possibility, any day(s) you are available is fine, for this camp only. (Summer camp requires a week-long commitment.)

It is important to understand that the volunteer’s job is working with children (not animals). Volunteers do prep work before and after class, clean up, assist with managing children's behavior, and supervise lunch & play time. Volunteers help the teacher with animal lessons, art and games.

Volunteers must fill out the application and return to Anna Herrera, Education Supervisor. Applications can be faxed to 858-756-3954. You are not guaranteed a spot as a volunteer until the application has been received and you have been contacted via email or phone to confirm your assignment. If you do not receive confirmation, please contact Anna at 858-756-4117 ext. 372.

We also have a Summer Critter Camp which runs June 7 through August 20th. Volunteers must be entering the 9th grade in the Fall of 2010 in order to volunteer. Or if you are a teen entering the 7th or 8th grade, you can sign up for the Critter Camp Leadership Program.

Please visit our website at www.animalcenter.org/volunteer to complete the application or call Anna Herrera, Education Supervisor, at (858) 756-4117 ext. 372 with any questions. Thanks!
