Singing for Joy and Life - “Wholistic” Voice Training

My approach involves the Whole Person, ergo “Wholistic” – all of the elements we, as people, bring into our music.
Contact Michael Bierbaum at: 415.456.0555 or email tenorc@gmail.com for registration, location and tuition information.

My students say:

“Michael has shown me how beautiful singing should be effortless as I prepare to audition for the Merola Program,”

“I came to Michael for some quick ideas and new vocal licks to help me prepare for my American Idol audition.
He gave me a new way of thinking about my music that has changed my whole approach in both my singing and fiddle playing,”

“I come to Michael because this feeds me as a person,”

“When I have a bad day I know after the first five minutes of my voice lesson I will feel like a human being again,”

“My voice lessons keep me centered in my stressful life.”

Beginner, to Advanced, Serious Student with Academic or Professional goals in mind or Simple Lover of Singing, you will find the freedom to express your art through your voice in my studio.

Michael has maintained a private voice studio for the past thirty years and has developed a "Wholistic" approach to vocal technique. Music is the acoustical expression of human emotion. It is expressed most purely in the vocal musician. As a singer our instrument is our whole body, mind and spirit. Good singing requires free movement of air through freedom from stress and tension.

Michael Bierbaum is a tenor and has a BA in Choral/Vocal Music from California State University at LA. He has studied voice with Pollyanne Baxter, Jill Anderson, and Jacalyn Bower Kreitzer.

Michael has taught music and theater arts in elementary and secondary schools in Southern California and San Luis Obispo County and currently is on the faculty at Cuesta College.

Michael has performed with professional, academic and community choirs, opera companies and musical theater companies for forty years, with such groups as The Pasadena Chorale, The William Hall Chorale, Cuesta College North County Chorus, San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival, San Luis Vocal Arts Ensemble, Cuesta Master Chorale, Pacific Repertory Opera, Monterey Opera, LA Opera, and the San Francisco Opera. He spent five years at The Great American Melodrama and Vaudeville, two seasons with PCPA Theaterfest and performed with the Cal Poly Theater, Cuesta College Theater, the Parish Players, Pacific Light Opera Theater, San Luis Little Theater and the Central Coast Children’s Theater. He is the founder and director of Merriwether’s Madrigals and the Pozo Bel Canto Quartet; director of Central Coast Children’s Theater’s Arts Alive Summer Workshop Program, past Artist-in-Residence with the Children’s Creative Project, and presenter at Dramatic Connections and current Musical Director of the Cambria Community Chorale.

Michael has even twice sung the National Anthem at the Dodger Stadium.

I offer lessons on drumset for every imaginable style of music, am a specialist on rudimental and classical snare drum, and also offer interested students the opportunity to explore the depth of Brazilian and Cuban musics. My students range in age from 3 to 65 and encompass all ability levels, from beginners to working professionals. I also teach group classes in Brazilian percussion. For examples of the variety of musics we explore in the group classes, please ask me via email for the web site address of my performing group, Batucada Nana.

My private studio, with 2 drum sets and a full range of percussion instruments, is located in central Santa Cruz. For rates and scheduling please email me through this web site, or call me at 831-427-3335. A sliding scale is also offered for students of limited means.

I work in a very personalized manner with all my students: mine is definitely not a "one size fits all approach." Three and a half decades of teaching experience allow me to lead my students to their goals by taking the path that is most effective and FUN for them. Whether it be snare drum for school students involved in concert or marching band, drumset studies tailored to the styles that most interest the student (rock, blues, jazz, punk, funk, country, world beat, reggae, swing, Latin, big band, samba and more), musical theatre, or intensive work with the abstract concepts involved in composition and improvisation... we learn quickly and have a very good time!

Fifty years ago, at the age of 6, I began playing drums on the frozen tundra of the beautiful state of Minnesota. Embarking on a full time performing career after college (including 300 nights a year for nearly 10 years), I studied with master drummers and absorbed local influences in Minneapolis, Chicago and Seattle, before my dreams eventually took me to Paris, France. Over the course of more than six years there I toured all corners of Europe with leading jazz trios and quartets, directed prestigious Brazilian batucadas and escolas da samba, played in Paris' most popular "orchestre de bal," offered workshops in African-American music throughout the continent, and served as the sole demonstrator of electronic percussion and drumset systems for Yamaha Musique France.

In addition, I co-produced the very successful "All Star" jazz music workshops organized by International Music Seminars™ in Montpelier and Antibes, on the French Riviera. I continue to tour the United States and Europe, and have performed and presented workshops alongside such artists as Diane Schuur, Chick Corea, Joe Diorio, Dave Liebman, Charlie Byrd, Al DiMeola, Richie Beirach, Billy Hart, Trilok Ghertu, Joey Baron, Dave Weckl, Pat Metheny, Toots Thielmans, Gary Burton, Dick Oatts and the group Oregon.

A few of my specific credentials include Music Education studies at University of Minnesota, where I was fortunate to work for 4 years with Marvin Dahlgren, the legendary "Godfather of 4-Way Coordination" on drumset. I also studied Anthropology and World Cultures at Macalester College in St. Paul. And now, after teaching in Santa Cruz for more than 15 years, my students populate the professional music scene here, playing in bands like "Sambada," “Sourgrass,” “Olona with Danjuma,” “Aphrodesia,” “Live Action Heroes,” “Frequency Jones,” and a wide variety of local blues, rock, world and jazz groups.

I also offer rhythmic consulting services for bands of all levels and styles, preparing them to groove tightly together for performance or studio recording. Soon, people will be able to buy my comprehensive rhythmic theory book, "The Musician's Guide to Rhythm," due to be released in mid-2011.

Give me a call.

I am an experienced musician, teacher and performer with lots of patience and a strong memory of not being able to tune my guitar, let alone communicate with it.

Years later I can play and express things on the instrument I couldn't even conceive of when I first started. When I first learned how to practice and approach the instrument properly I made more progress in three months than I had in the first three YEARS of playing. Oh, I had tried lessons but at best they just showed me what to learn, not how to learn it, or how to approach the instrument.

"How do i change the chords?," I'd ask. Not on of them could ever give me any answer except "practice." Sound familiar?

I learned a better way, largely from almost famous rockers and professional New York Jazz musicians. I quickly learned that rock, folk, metal, and blues require a much different perspective and often a completely different technique from jazz and classical. So I spent years adapting their methods to Rock and popular music styles, both for my own playing and writing (I play lead guitar in my own original music rock band) and for my students. I made it step by step, integrated, and less intimidating.

My goal has always been to teach my students (and myself) how to express themselves on the guitar, find their own voice, and, quite simply, play the hell out of the damned thing. And I've been doing just that full time since 2003.
Don't wait any longer. Give me a call. Even if you don't have a guitar yet, I can help you choose one and probably get you a discount as well.
YOU CAN PLAY GUITAR if you want to.

It takes much less time than you think if you start out right.

Gift certificates and student discounts available.

Females and males, young and old, rock stars and absolute beginners all welcome.
Thanks,
Jay Skyler
(415) 845-5471

Call or visit my Website here for more information on guitar lessons in San Francisco. There's also free scale and fretboard diagrams and guides to guitars and amps and related gear.
Hello, I am offering a premier tutoring service to students of all ages. I am currently a High School Senior but I assure you I am very qualified. I currently work for a professional tutoring company so I know how it all works, have tutored privately in the past and most importantly all the material is very palatable since I've taken the same courses.

I can offer tutoring in the following:

Math: All levels up to Algebra 2/Trig
Literature: Basic writing skills, essays, grammar, etc.

Standardized Testing:

I can help with various forms of standardized testing ranging from SAT I, various SAT IIs, the ACT and can provide workshops for standardized testing writing. Here is what I am very proficient at teaching:

SAT I Reasoning Math (I got a 790 on this section)
SAT II Math Level 2 (I scored an 800 on this section)
ACT Reasoning Test (Received a 34 Overall, 35 on Writing and Math)
SAT/ACT Writing Essay Portion

My price range usually varies between 20-30 dollars an hour which is very cheap in comparison to other tutoring companies, and I guarantee I can provide a better experience given that I know this information and can provide a perspective from someone who has gone through the entire process. I am also willing to do college counseling for upcoming Juniors. A place to meet, what to go over and the price will all be discussed in an email. Thank you for your time.

Hello,

and thank you for stopping by to look.

I offer affordable English lessons, but more importantly, quality service in terms of teaching you, your children, or anyone seeking my services. I teach all forms of writing--essays, creative-writing, etc. Additionally, I teach Literature with an emphasis on developing critical thinking and reading skills. Teaching grammar is another essential aspect of my lessons--I'm not talking about just teaching grammar to get by, but possessing grammar skills for a lifetime in order for you to communicate with others in a proper format, whether you are speaking and/or writing.

I possess three degrees; they are, a BA in English, an MFA in writing, and an MA TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language). My degrees are from "top-notch" universities, acquired with honors. More importantly, I have "real-time," in-class experience, teaching Kindergarten through High School and University students. Not everyone learns the same way, so I adjust each session with my own special way, if you will, derived from empirical research and my experiences as a teacher.

I have excellent references upon your request. My fees are $35 for one hour, and lessons can be conducted anywhere, usually the library or your home. Others tutors may charge "dirt-cheap" for their lessons, but are they genuine MATESL (MASTER'S OF TEACHING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE) degree holders? Could one teach ESL with a degree other than a specialized MATESL degree? It is imperative to give your loved-ones the best; that is, well qualified teachers as myself.

In a world where our education system has dwindled, due to many complex and negligent factors, especially in the realm of mediocre teachers, I have remained a teacher separated from these factors, whose primary cause is to effectively teach the second language learner, as well as the native English speaker, a new way of learning that is engaging and meaningful.

I look forward to assisting you or your loved ones in their English endeavors.

Sincerely,

the English teacher who is culturally and socially aware of the "learning" population.

Many students are unhappy with their SAT scores. With careful and intense SAT preparation, you can improve your score the second time. However, adequate preparation can take six to twelve or months, depending on your aptitude. If you wait until your junior or senior year, you will not have enough time. That is why you should begin SAT preparation in the ninth or tenth grade. Older students must devote themselves intensely to the task and this is where one-on-one tutoring comes into play.

I help students prepare for the English sections of the SAT (Critical Reading and Writing). We focus on vocabulary (words like "mendacious" and "abstemious"), reading college-level articles and biographies, grammar (identifying sentence and paragraph-level errors), and writing a timed twenty-five minute essay. I am a woman with a PhD and I have two children in college. I provide a safe and supportive environment for your aspiring student. If you live in the greater San Francisco area, I can come to your home or we can meet at the library for guided, intense SAT preparation.
HI! Now is the time to start tutoring -- I can help your child stay current with the curriculum and even go ahead in the lessons.

I've tutored elementary to college-aged students in subjects such as math (elementary to algebra II), English, beginning French, as well as general study habits, for over 20 years. I graduated from Santa Clara Univ. in 1994 with a BSC in Finance and a minor in French. I live in Saratoga, and do tutoring at my house. I have done private tutoring for such a long time because it's a hobby I truly enjoy. I had a full-time job for 14 years as a Commercial Lending Relationship Manager but was laid off last year and then had a baby. I am now a stay-at-home mom which allows me to be flexible with scheduling tutoring sessions. I am a very patient person who tries to find ways to help students improve scholastically while increasing their self-confidence in their abilities.

Please contact me if your kids need tutoring in any of these subjects. I charge $40/hour and am very happy to give you references.

Thanks,

Michelle

I teach writing courses for high school students and adults. Many people in remote places have asked me for help, so I have developed an online writing course. The student is given an assignment to write a paragraph or short essay on a given topic. The assignment is emailed to me, and I critique it. I correct the grammatical errors, improve the word choice, eliminate redundancies, and make suggestions regarding organization, flow, and style. Over time, the student’s writing gradually improves and writing in Standard English becomes more natural.

Here are two examples of prompts:

(1) “Write one well-developed paragraph about your favorite local restaurant. Try to convince someone from out-of-town to try it.”

(2) “Write a four to five paragraph short essay on why it is useful to speak more than one language. Give at least two specific examples that back up your claims.”

If you would like to write the assignment given in prompt (1), I will evaluate your paragraph gratis and tell you how to improve your writing.
Hello,

I offer affordable tutoring and homework help. I can come to the location of your choice or you can come to me. If you choose for me to come to the location of your choice, you will save the time and gas money you would spend driving back and forth on regular basis to a tutoring center. Below are some points about my qualifications, my rate, and me:

- I have worked at Sylvan Learning Center and other educational institutions.

- If you quote me the price of any tutoring center, I will charge you significantly less than their going rate. I will also match any specials or promotions that they may be having and any on-going perks, sibling discounts, etc. If you choose to not quote a price, my charge is $10.50 per half hour. Think of how much you could save over the course of a week, month, year, etc.

- I offer a referral reward. If any tutoring center offers this, I will match their referral reward amount. If you refer me to someone and they use my service, you will receive a $100 refund every time you do this as long as the person you refer to me uses my service for a minimum of 4 hours.

- I use positive reinforcement and encouragement. I do not yell at children or make them feel bad about themselves or the subjects they are studying in school.

- I am approachable, friendly, a good communicator, and I work well with parents and children.

- I keep parents and/or teachers informed about their child’s progress and problems that I notice during tutoring. I welcome and encourage updates from teachers and parents about their child's performance at school.

- I offer a trial period for you to try me out.

- You are more than welcome to sit in during the sessions at anytime.
Professional Math and Science Tutoring
I 100% GUARANTEE MY SERVICES! (Call For Details)

Call 8am-10pm, 7 days a week

(888) 311-8271

I am a professional math and science tutor who has helped hundreds of students. Many of my students have achieved success beyond what they ever thought possible. Numerous students have gone from failing, to getting A's on tests, in as little as two sessions. The majority of my students from the 2008-2009 school year achieved A's in their math and science courses. My love and passion for tutoring has grown into a nationally recognized tutoring company in which I have further perfected my methods and helped pass them on to others.

My tutoring style is aggressive; I am constantly analyzing what a student does and doesn't understand, using my mastery of the material to devise questions that facilitate understanding in weak areas. I am a tutor that truly has a passion for the art of teaching. Many of my students have said that two hours with me is better than a whole week in class.

I am available for travel to student's homes or a preferred location. Subjects that I tutor are listed below:

Math:
Elementary Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Trigonometry, Algebra II, College Algebra, Math Analysis, Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, College Calculus (Single Variable), College Calculus (Multi Variable), Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Statistics, AP Statistics, College Statistics.

Science:
Elementary Science, Biology, AP Biology, Anatomy Physiology, Chemistry, AP Chemistry, College Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physical Chemistry, AP Physics B, AP Physics C, Physics: Mechanics, Physics: Electricity and Magnetism, Physics: Optics, Physics: Relativity, Physics: Quantum Mechanics, Thermodynamics.

Standardized Tests:
ISEE, PSAT, SAT I, SAT II, ACT, GRE, GMAT, MCAT, DAT, PCAT, CBEST

Cheers,
Adam

(888) 311-8271

TESTIMONIALS

"I found out about Adam because my little sister was using him as a geometry tutor. When I began struggling in AP Calculus my mom suggested I use Adam. I had no idea it was possible to tutor math all the way from geometry to calculus but in my first session with Adam I officially decided that he was not only the best tutor I had ever had but also the smartest person I had ever met. Every single question I asked him he knew the answer to and every single problem I showed him he could solve. Since I began using Adam my test scores have gone up significantly. He was so helpful that I also recommended him to my best friend who has also seen a significant increase in her test results. Adam has an extreme knowledge of all levels of math and is genuinely interested in helping everyone who he tutors not only improve their grades but also truly understand the material. I would highly recommend Adam to anyone who needs help with any level of math."

Alex Duhl, AP Calculus Student at Brentwood H.S.

"Adam is truly a miracle worker. My daughter is a sophomore in a private school with a very rigorous curriculum. She has always struggled in math and had anxiety every time she had a test. After the first quarter this year I received a letter from her teacher that she was failing math. I was very fortunate to find Adam and after speaking with him on the phone I could tell he had a real concern for teaching students such as my daughter. He emphasized his passion for tutoring math and that he thought math was so much fun. My daughter was having her final exam in Algebra 2 the following day and worked with Adam for two hours. When he left he assured me that my daughter would get an A on the exam. Of course, I was very skeptical, especially having had other tutors work with her in the past and never receiving the desired results. That night I could see that she was feeling more confident and sure enough she came home the following day so excited that she did get an A on the test. Adam knows how to connect with students. He has the ability to turn something that my daughter thought was impossible into making her a success. Words cannot express my appreciation to him for not only teaching her in a way she could understand, but also giving her the tools she needed to continue to succeed. He really cared about her and even called the following day to speak to her. I honestly don't know how he accomplished so much with my daughter in so little time except that he has a very special gift."

Wendy Wyatt, Mother of Viewpoint H.S. Algebra II Student

"I hired Adam to perform a nearly impossible task: to teach math to my son, then in college, who had not completed a math class since the seventh grade due to severe illness. Starting in August, Adam had to bring my son to a point where he could test into his grade level (then a sophomore in college) which would allow him to take and succeed in the required math classes to qualify for transfer to a major four-year university in California: all in 6 months. My son did test well enough to take both Pre-Calculus and Statistics in the Spring semester and I am proud to say that with Adam's continued help he earned a B and an A in those classes. I cannot recommend Adam highly enough."

Phil Ames, Father of University of Southern California College Placement Exam Applicant

"Adam is a phenomenal tutor. He is one of the few people who has the natural gift of teaching. He is intelligent, clear and engaging. He not only inspires me to learn, but he makes each session enjoyable and exciting. If asked, I would strongly suggest that he pursue a career in education. But what is most impressive is that Adam took me from a person who had not opened a math book in almost eight years to someone who was so successful on the placement exam that I have placed into the highest math level offered. I have not only reached my goals, I have surpassed them. And this is all thanks to Adam."

Rebecca Hersh-Boyle, Pre-Med Student

"Adam was a truly excellent tutor. His eager and charismatic personality always kept me engaged even if the material was boring or difficult. He made sure I knew how to do a problem in multiple ways, including how to check my work on a calculator which proved to be incredibly useful. During the final 6 weeks of school, my grade raised from a C+ to an A- in calculus which would have never been possible without his help. He is easily the best tutor I have ever had, and because of him I actually started enjoying math class."

Mackenzie, senior calculus student at Marymount High School

"We are so lucky to have found Adam. With his committed, creative and engaging personality, Mitchell's grades raised from a D to a B+ in physics and from a C to an A in pre-calculus in just six weeks. He was truly a great tutor for my son."

Linda S., mother of a senior at Milken Community High School

"I can't even begin to describe how amazing Adam is. He was such a blessing in my life. I had taken college algebra twice in school and was never able to make a passing grade. On my third try, I decided to get a tutor. I went through three private tutors before finding Adam. I wasted hundreds of dollars on tutors who didn't have a clue what they were doing! Feeling hopeless, I decided to give it one last try. It was then that I found Adam. In the end, he was able to take me from an F to a C+ in just two weeks. His ability to explain, what seemed to me like a foreign language, was incredible! He was able to recognize both my weaknesses and my strengths. He never allowed me to feel stupid; instead he encouraged me throughout the entire process. His easy-going personality made the whole process seem like I was meeting with an old friend, not a tutor. Words can't explain the gratitude I feel for him. Adam is amazing!"

Brie, algebra student preparing for college placement exam

"Adam was an excellent tutor! By continually analyzing my understanding, he developed a method to best teach me. Every session he inspired me to learn more and kept me excited about the whole process. He also has an unending supply of math tricks; they are so helpful. I don't know what I would do without him."

Adrianna, professional studying trigonometry for career enrichment

"I cannot emphasize enough how exceptional Adam is. I am in my junior year of college and have dreaded math my entire educational career. I have been working with Adam for four months in preparation to take the math course required for college graduation. When I began working with him I literally was relearning fractions and basic algebra. I was planning to test into college algebra, the lowest level course to fulfill the requirement I need for my degree, but after my wonderful experience with him I will be testing into calculus! He has a remarkable style that makes even the most difficult of problems simple and fun to understand. His enthusiasm and natural gift for teaching has turned me from an easily frustrated, math-loathing student into one who truly enjoys and looks forward to progressing in mathematics. Trust me, you will be doing yourself a huge favor by choosing to work with Adam. Your brain and patience will thank you."

Preston, student preparing for college placement exam

Dear Adam

Aidan received his AP test results yesterday and scored a [perfect] 5! We are so delighted with his performance and the savvy way you worked with him this past school year. We found your personable style, consistent encouragement and strategic thinking to be a tremendous asset in building Aidan's skills, confidence and ultimately his abilities in Calculus. Working in the house on our schedule was invaluable for our busy lives too. The whole family would highly recommend you as a tutor to anyone who needed help in math. Aidan has a natural gift in this arena but is often scattered and unwilling to do his work. We saw a real shift in his approach, attitude and performance; and so appreciated the firm but friendly way you interacted with him. It's not easy to work with teens and you have a real knack! Richard and I thank you as does Aidan - know that you helped our son in a big way and helped launch him into a deeper exploration of math. We will keep you posted on his progress at Evergreen.

Warm regards
Kathleen (Mother of Venice H.S. AP Calculus Student)
