<![CDATA[English is a silly language, but if you want to rise to the top of your profession or academic class, it is important to speak well and exhibit an element of refinement. It is always sad to learn when a good worker, technician or scientist hits the "glass ceiling" because s/he can not run a meeting effectively, or communicate with colleagues in sales or marketing. Some companies give such employees a deadline for improving their presentation, or they terminate them. I offer sessions in accent reduction for speakers from many linguistic backgrounds. My method involves vocal exercises (not unlike voice-lessons), drills with vowels and consonants, and just plain old repetition. Often, it involves training the speaker to speak in a lower register of his/her vocal range, and learning to talk at a slower pace. This program includes tutoring in civics, and cultural enrichment for people who are new to America, or preparing for the citizenship test. The goal with most students is accent reduction, not elimination. Some of our most elegant speakers speak according to the rules, but retain a subtle element of their native tongue. I like to encourage that, except in rare cases. My linguistic training involved studying Spanish, German, Arabic and Hebrew. But I work well with students from all linguistic backgrounds. Because you can't walk? move? rotate? see? hear the good music?Actually it’s a GOOD time, it’s the RIGHT time to learn to dance, because now you know what you want.
