Volunteering as a Court Appointed Special Advocate

CASA empowers everyday citizens as officers of the court. Abused and neglected children often slip through the cracks among hundreds of current cases. CASA volunteers change that. Appointed by judges, CASA volunteers typically handle just one case at a time—and commit to staying on that case until the child is placed in a safe, permanent home. While others may come and go, CASA volunteers provide that one constant that children need in order to thrive.
CASA volunteers are community members who undergo a thorough background check and screening process and complete at least thirty-two hours of initial training. CASA volunteers meet and work with dedicated professionals working to help children secure safety and permanence. Marin County CASA volunteers are of diverse backgrounds, professionally, educationally or ethnically.

Next training classes begin on May 22nd... call now!

If you’d like to learn more about our program contact Tyler at tyler@marinadvocates.org or check out our website www.marinadvocates.org
After the devistating earthquake struck Haiti I wanted to find a way to help Haiti by staying in the United States. I found it! I used what knowlege of graphic design I had to create t-shirts for men and women where the profits would be donated to Haiti. I posted my design whith an online custom t-shirt company called zazzle. The shirts say "Haiti Releif" on them and have the Haiti coat of arms below. The profits or royalties are to be donated to help Haiti disaster relief. These shirts are a great way to show that you care and helped a worthy cause. Best of all it will remind others to donate to help Haiti or to buy one of their own. These shirts can be ordered through the links below. Discounts ae given to bulk orders and shirts can be customized to different styles, colors, sizes, and even be bought from organicly made fabric. Bumper stickers are avalible as well. Please tell your friends so we can get as much support as we can to Haiti. Reply and I can give you a discount code. Christians needed to write to inmates for discipling/ministering purposes. We sent them a Salvation Bible study, and they wrote back asking for a Christian penpal.

Inmates who were lonely and depressed have told us that after they started corresponding with one of our volunteers, they now have joy!

These inmates (and many more) need someone to write to them:

* James P- Has been in prison since 1978. He didn’t give much information, but he signed his letter “In Christ.”

* James D - Was raised in a Christian household, but childhood trauma led him to violence, Satanism, and witchcraft He rededicated his life to the Lord in prison. He is serving life without parole and wrote that he would "like to correspond with a fellow believer." He signed his letter "Your brother in Christ."

* Paul R - An African-American Christian. We don’t know much about him. He is helping a friend in England start a U.S. prison ministry. Very friendly and easy to write to!

* Rey - A 35-year old from Santa Fe. He wrote, “I’m not a religious man, but I believe there has to be more than this life. I try to keep an open mind.” He has never read the Bible, but would like to. He is reading a book about Mary Magdelene. We need someone to witness to him!

* Peter - 35-years old. Not saved. Wrote that he was hesitant to respond, but he is "ready to hear a new voice." Has been in the Pelican Bay SHU (=isolation) since he was 24.

* Floyd - A 24-year old who is looking for "spiritual support." He has been in prison since age 16! He wrote, “Being incarcerated since age 16 is stressful and it’s taken its toll on me.”

* Mauro - A Christian lifer who is not part of any denomination. There are 10 other Christians on his yard, but they don’t see each other much because they are always on lockdown. He wrote, “I really hope to hear from someone I can fellowship with.”

Please write to Matthew25.36Ministries@yahoo.com and let us know how many inmates you would like to write to and we will send you their contact information. Tell us a little about your walk!

It is recommended that you do not use your home address. Use a P.O. Box or church address instead. If you do not have a P.O. Box, you can use ours.

Volunteers - Please keep in contact with us! We are spending too much time following up with the volunteers. It is ok to change your mind and decide that you no longer want to write. (There is no condemnation in Christ Jesus). But not telling us hurts the inmate!

"Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow prisoners." – Hebrews 13:3
We are a new non-profit cat rescue group and desperately need foster homes in the Vallejo/Benicia area. We have already made and will continue to make an even bigger difference in the overwhelming amount of cats and kittens who are euthanized in Fairfield at the shelter each week, and the countless homeless/abandoned animals who need our help. Did you know that 150 of these innocent souls are killed weekly? Most people choose to NOT know this. It's the horrifying truth, plain and simple.
There are just too many cats, and not nearly enough homes. Many are living in cages waiting to be adopted. Some do okay, others get depressed, it's very sad.

We are operating in the Vallejo, Benicia, Fairfield and Vacaville areas. (Solano County) Foster homes are so very needed in the Vallejo/Benicia area. Whether you can take one or several cats into your home until they can find their forever homes at one of our adoption events, is greatly appreciated! We have sweet kitties who are currently living in cages because we are short on foster homes. These cats are all ages, most are adults because alot of times they are at adoptions with young kittens, and overlooked. It's sad but true, they need to know they are wanted and loved just as much! They have all been spayed/neutered, vaccinated, use their litter box faithfully, do not have behavior issues, etc. and are ready to be adopted. You are not responsible for any medical care. Just some love and attention during their wait. Please consider opening your home to them, it's so very rewarding, and the companionship is wonderful and fulfilling. YOUR HELP WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Please contact Lisa at lisa@catalesrescue.org and let me know you would like to foster one or more kitties.
It's so very rewarding to know that when united, we CAN make a difference! Please contact me~

Thanks so much~
Lisa Our website is catalesrescue.org. Feel free to visit~

The mission of Stand Up For Kids is to help homeless and street kids.

The Silicon Valley chapter of StandUp For Kids is one of 42 active, all-volunteer programs in cities that reach out to the 1.3 million homeless and street youth in the United States. We believe there are 2500 homeless youth in the Silicon Valley area. These kids aren’t on their own because they choose to be. They are there because they did NOT receive the kind of support during their youth that most of us did, and have run away or been kicked out for reasons beyond their control. They all need someone who cares about them, whom they can trust, who will challenge them to develop and execute a plan to improve their lives, and who will be their cheerleader when they make positive steps toward achieving that plan.

In Silicon Valley, we are a small but passionate group of volunteers working to make a positive and critical difference in the lives of homeless, at-risk youth. We are looking to add to our teams:

Fund Raising:
You would be working with the Director of Fund Development to come up with fund raising ideas and help excecute them.

Program Support:
You will be working with the Director of Program Support in getting together stuff needed for the kids, for example, food, clothes, hygiene products, etc.

Outreach Counselor:
An outreach counselor will have direct contact with the at risk youth. You will be an advocate for him/her and present options to the youth that will help improve his/her life. Most importantly tell the kid that you are there for him/her through thick and thin and prove it over time. You will also have to go through a madatory training program.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I volunteer with an organization that rescues dogs and looks for suitable homes for them. We always need help working with the dogs from something as simple as just loving and sitting with them (helping them trust people) to taking them for walks, helping adminster meds (under supervision), bathing them, basic training and helping at the mobile adoptions... (We recently had a dog stolen at the adoption...probably to be sold for profit) We also have the opportunity to foster dogs in your home so they get all the love they need until a new permanent home can be found.

This is a very low commitment opportunity. You are only asked to come out and help when you have time (but to commit to a time so we can be sure we have coverage) so don't worry about parceling out your schedule for this. We just need caring and patient dog lovers who are willing to help get a dog back on track.

Of course it is very important to us to find people who are caring and understanding of the situation so I want to communicate with you a little first. Please send me an email telling me about yourself, why you are interested in helping out and what your availability looks like (we run most of the mobile adoptions on Saturday mid day). Assuming we have similar goals we can work out a time for a phone conversation.

Thanks so much for your interest and we look forward to meeting you!

Hello Everybody, We have quite a situation here! My friend has saved many cats and kitties lives over the years and recently he was been bit by one of his cats and it got infected and so he went to the hospital and they reported it to animal control and now Animal control is trying to confiscate the trailer where all his kitties are stored and so we must find a driver with a Semi truck with 1 or 2 axle design to help tow a small semi trailer tonight before animal control steps in tomorrow morning and takes all the kitties and Euthanize all the kitties and impound the trailer. So any help would be appreciated and to top it all off my friend has a sick kitty up at the Adobe Animal Hospital in Los Altos that is very close to dying and he has spent his last bit of money to pay his vet bill to save his kitten. So please respond if your willing to help and all this can be verified by contacting the shelter which I volunteer at. So please do not flag this ad because everything is totally true and I have witnessed it first hand today at his home. Thanks once again and like I said any help would be appreciated!!!!!

Jim

I am a student pursuing my Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology, and am looking for volunteers.

As part of my training I am required to hold 30-minute “Dyad Listening Sessions” in which I invite members of my community to share whatever they’d like for 30 minutes while I practice some basic counseling skills.

The purpose of these exercises is for me to practice basic listening/observational/questioning skills. As such, it is not directive and you will be introducing a topic and doing most of the talking. I will be listening, reflecting/summarizing what I hear, and asking you open-ended questions. The only requirements to participate are that you be at least 18 years old; people of all ages, gender identifications, ethnic backgrounds, religious traditions, sexual orientations, political views and lifestyles are welcome.

Please note that this is NOT therapy. I will have a list of referrals available should you decide during our session that you are interested in seeing a licensed professional. The sessions will be recorded for my own later use as I write a reflection paper - NO ONE ELSE will hear the recording and I will keep the strictest confidentiality regarding what is said during the sessions. I can provide you with a copy of the recording if you'd like.

The meetings will take place in my home in North/Downtown Berkeley. To maintain continuity, I try to create an environment free from music, food, alcohol, smoking or other interruptions - with the exception of bathroom breaks, of course ;)

I'd like to underscore that you can really talk about anything - you don't need to reveal personal or intimate information unless you'd like to, and being quiet/contemplative is ok too.

At the end of the session I'll ask you to fill out a brief feedback form. And that's it!

I am not able to compensate volunteers, though I hope that being given a space to talk to an empathetic ear will be a rewarding experience in itself. Please email me if you're interested! Thanks,
Hello, I am posting this craigslist message to warn people about a certain man, his first name is Steve of what I found out when I had met him. He is posing as a San Francisco AIDS volunteer trying to sell candy bars to people on the street, scamming them out of money . I had arecently contacted some workers from the SF AIDS foundation and they are aware of this man, he has been doing this for many years. He is about between 5'10 to 6ft. Light brown dark hazel hair and light brown eyes. Usually he will be wearing a torn, dirty and half ripped one shoulder strap bag. He goes on the streets of San francisco and goes up to people asking if they would like to buy a candy bar for the AIDS foundation. He is really convicing ( believe me, I was alomost fooled). He will ask if if you would like to join, telling people they can help walk dogs, clean houses or other things while working in groups of four or five. His candy bars are ususally wrapped up in pre-wrapped plastic and he has no ID, Badge, business card or anything saying he officially works for them. If you see him, try to keep his attention and get a police officer as fast as you can. If you catch him, good for you! Please, I would like everyone to know about this problem. It is not far that he is scamming money out of a great organisation for people that really need that money. If you don't believe me, you can contact the SF AIDS foundation and they will tell you they have been trying to catch this guy for years!
Thanks so much everyone and be on the lookout and spread the word!
Canal Alliance is looking for a volunteer to assist in a Tuesday night ESL (English as a Second Language) class. The class is staffed with one teacher and two classroom aides; currently, we are short an aide.

Aides do a variety of things in the class: they assist individual students, work with students in groups, help the teacher present lessons, check student work and give them feedback, and so on. The students, all adults, are a pleasure to work with -- motivated, friendly, funny, and grateful. The work is both rewarding and highly enjoyable. Moreover, it’s indispensible to the success of our program: the extra attention that aides provide to students makes a big difference in their learning.

The class where we currently need an aide meets on Tuesdays from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m., and ends in early May. It’s a regular weekly commitment, but there are subs who can fill in for you if you need to miss class on occasion. You don’t need to speak Spanish, and no prior experience is required -- just the desire to engage with students and help them work on their English skills.

Canal Alliance has been running English classes in the Canal neighborhood for over 20 years. In the current term, we are running 21 different classes, meeting at different times and at different levels of difficulty, all staffed by volunteer teachers and aides. At Pets Are Wonderful Support (PAWS), we work with people with AIDS and other disabilities to help them maintain their pet-related needs. We provide many volunteer services such as dog-walking, foster care and a weekly food bank. This is a great opportunity for you to help your community while getting to enjoy the company of man's best friend!

PAWS is looking for volunteers to go to clients' homes on a weekly basis and walk that client's dog at the same time each week. PAWS makes an effort to place volunteers with clients who live near them, or near where the volunteer works. PAWS is also always in need of foster care for these animals. When PAWS clients go into the hospital, or are looking for a new home, we often need a place where we can place a cat or a dog for a few weeks, until the person is able to come home and reclaim his/her beloved pet. By sheltering the animal for a few weeks, you would be helping the person to keep his/her pet and not have to give the pet up..

Please visit our website www.pawssf.org, email us, or call Daniel Marlay, the PAWS Volunteer Coordinator at 415-979-9550 x305 if you'd like to get started making a difference today!
