I work with students on creating effective communication between themselves and their horses. Essentially we all want a horse that is going to do what we ask, when we ask, no questions asked, but what we don’t realize is that to create this horse we need to bring certain things to the table so that the horse knows what we want. Most “bad behavior” in horses is created by a horse being confused and getting frustrated, or thinking it is supposed to be doing one thing when you think you’re asking for another. I am looking to correct these communication break downs when they occur and also trying to prevent them from happening. Having done so, I feel that this is a strength in itself. It took me many years to know what the REAL fundamentals of playing guitar are, how to demonstrate them clearly, and where to start. Many great players still don't make the best teachers. I try and fill both roles. My hope is to bring out the unique musical personality in each of my students by providing them the inspiration, knowledge, and patience it requires to learn any instrument. Well aside from being very talented, which most are, they perform their swings and throwing more closely to natural biomechanics and the laws of physics than most. How do they know to do this when the rest of us don't, or are being taught not to? Easily, they've been doing it their entire life. This is what their body tells them to do, and actually to a lesser extent, what our bodies were telling us to do when we played. Our bodies have natural movements in anything we do. Hitting and throwing a baseball are not exceptions to this rule. And they should not be corrected to counter the laws of physics and natural biomechanics of the body. Throwing is a natural body movement, and pitching is no different. My college coach once told me that the arm slot of a player should be determined by him/her going out to the lake and throwing a rock without thinking about it. How true is that statement! But, how many times have you and I seen a pitching instructor spend countless hours talking about a pitcher's arm slot, or changing what is natural to that player. Now, this is not to say that players don't need to be instructed, but I would bet that almost 100% of those needing instruction on their arm slot are doing something wrong way before the arm is coming forward.
