ARE YOU A SURVIVOR OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE?
If so, you may qualify for a study and help others....

I am a clinical psychology graduate student working on my dissertation that is in need for participants for my study. The goal of this study is to explore the effects of childhood sexual abuse based on age of onset. There has been a lot of studies done that have looked at the overall psychological effects of childhood sexual abuse, but not much has been focused on whether the age of onset of the sexual abuse causes greater and/or lesser harm to an individual. By partcipating in this study, you may help identify better ways to work with children who have been sexually abused and women survivors of sexual abuse. The goal is to develop individualized and accurate treatment strategies. Your input is important in gaining more knowledge in the area of child sexual abuse. To qualify for my study, you would need to meet the following criteria:

1. Be a woman.
2. Be between the ages of 18- 60 years old
3. Experienced sexual abuse sometime between the age of 4-17
4. Is not currently a resident of a mental health, substance abuse, and/or medical facility.

As a participant, you would meet with me for about an hour in which you would complete a brief information form and two surveys. Your partcipation is confidential and anonymous. As a reward for your partcipation, you will receive a Starbuck's giftcard (for those whom complete the form and surveys). Please contact me via email @ maureenesparza@gmail.com or via phone (206)660-7545 for more information, if you have any questions, and/or if you are interested in participating.

Thank you! I'm hoping this research will be able to broaden our overall knowledge about this area....
Life Improvement Following Traumatic Brain Injury (LIFT) Study

After a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), many people experience symptoms including low mood, poor energy, loss of interest in usual activities, and changes in appetite and sleep. LIFT uses a particular approach to education and counseling, called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This type of counseling has been used to effectively treat these symptoms with people who have not had a brain injury. LIFT is investigating whether these same strategies can also help people who have had a TBI. Researchers hope to find out if counseling can help people with a TBI get back to activities they enjoy, develop positive mental habits, and improve overall quality of life. Eligible participants will be enrolled in the study for 16 weeks, with a follow-up phone call 8 weeks later.

The aim of this pilot study is to test the effectiveness of a telephone-based and in-person Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) intervention for treating Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) following Traumatic Brain Injury. Participants are randomized to one of three groups: 1) Telephone-based CBT, 2) In-person CBT, or 3) Usual care (control). Participants choose a randomization option that includes the groups to which he/she would like to be randomized:

-Option 1: Telephone-based CBT versus Usual Care
-Option 2: In-person CBT versus Usual Care
-Option 3: In-person CBT versus Telephone-based CBT versus Usual Care

Participants randomized to either the telephone or in-person CBT groups will participate in 12 treatments sessions over 16 weeks. Treatment sessions will last approximately 45 minutes. Participants assigned to the control arm will NOT receive the 12 CBT sessions. All participants will be asked to participate in the telephone assessments at 8, 16, and 24 weeks following the baseline assessment. Telephone assessments will include questions about participants’ mood, activities, general health, and other symptoms.

This study does not accept healthy volunteers. Participants must meet the following eligibility criteria:
• at least 18 years of age
• sustained a complicated mild, moderate, or severe TBI within the last 5 years
• speak English fluently
• meet screening criteria for probable major depression

Exclusion criteria for this study are:
• does not have a telephone
• does not have a stable home
• history of bipolar disorder or schizophrenia
• current diagnosis of psychosis or suicidal intent
• evidence of significant cognitive impairment on neuropsychological testing
• currently in psychotherapy for depression, or planning to start psychotherapy for depression during the 16 week study

Participants will be paid up to $100 for their time and participation. For questions about LIFT, or to be considered for this study, please contact Kenneth Marshall at (206) 744-3609 or 1-866-577-1925.
Denise Louie Education Center is looking for consistent volunteers for our 2 Play and Learn Groups.

1. One play group is at the International District comunity center on Thursdays from 11-12:30pm (this group mostly speaks Mandarin/Cantonese)
2. The second play group is at the Columbia Library on Thursdays from 11-12:30pm. (this group mostly speaks Spanish)

Here is more information about Play and Learn Groups:

Denise Louie is offering two Play and Learn groups for 2009-2010. We’ve partnered with the Seattle Public Library to offer a Spanish and English bilingual group at the Columbia Library on Thursday mornings. This is our second year offering a Spanish/English Play and Learn group. Our partnership with the International District Community Center has helped us start a new group also meeting on Thursday mornings: our bilingual Mandarin and English group. Both groups are diverse and parents and caregivers have been consistent and committed to making the groups successful. Our groups this year are funded by United Way and are made possible through a partnership with our respective meeting sites as well as Childcare Resources (CCR).

Childcare Resources oversees Play and Learn groups throughout King County. Play and Learn is a trademarked concept that includes specific and defined, best-practice learning methods that we implement on a weekly basis in our groups. All our staff are trained and certified, as required by CCR, to offer these important child-driven groups. Parents or caregivers attend with their children, ages birth-five. As an agency partner, we report attendance to CCR, provide information to them biannually through caregiver surveys and commit to using trained facilitators to provide the leadership and planning for each group. In return, CCR provides training, supplies for special initiatives, curriculum and ongoing technical assistance for our groups and their facilitators. The target audience for CCR is not only parents but friends or family of young children who are acting as their caregivers. Attendance of caregivers is a specific demographic target that we report to CCR and we are seeing large numbers of caregivers in attendance, particularly at our Latino group.

Play and Learn Attendance and Demographics:
DLEC 2009-2010 Play and Learn groups have had over 80 new participants and 10 families returning from last year or other Play and Learn Groups around Seattle. Groups are drop-in and attendance does vary. The following are some attendance statistics and demographic trends:

Latino Group
• Averages 12-14 families (generally 25-30 participants total)
• Spanish-speaking caregivers comprise 1/3 of our average attendance totals.
• ½ of our current attendees speak Spanish primarily in the home, ¼ speak Spanish and English, and ¼ speak English or another language. The majority of our attendees live or work locally. We have fathers who attend regularly with their children
• Multiple referrals to DLEC’s early childhood programs as well as community referrals for birth-3 childcare and ESL classes have been made.
• Informal caregivers (a target audience for CCR) attend this group consistently with the children they care for. This is the primary source of structured education for these children.

International District Group
• Averages 3-5 families with some significant increases in attendance beginning in February (recently averaging 7 families). ID FD 1 is also attending the ID Play and Learn Group on a regular basis (not counted in attendance totals).
• ¾ of our current attendees speak a dialect of Chinese and live locally in ID, ¼ speak English at home and live outside the community. We have fathers and relative caregivers who attend regularly with their children.
• We had nearly 40 community attendees for our special, Chinese New Year Play and Learn group.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for this or have additional questions, please contact Frances Lin at flin@deniselouie.org or 206.621.7880 x12. Have you had to convince your elder loved one to finally put away the car keys?

I'm writing a series of articles for a website that provides resources for seniors in the Snohomish County area. How long did the process take?

I need to write and post the article within the next two weeks, so if you can participate in a brief interview with me by March 25th, please respond.

As the energies of the incoming age of Aquarius stimulate our hearts and minds, and as we begin to make
contact with that higher aspect of ourselves, the Soul, we will experience an inner prompting to be of service
to others. Inevitably we are brought into contact with people and circumstances
where this Soul urge can be put to practical use.

Service is most potent when performed in group formation. This is especially true in the case of a Transmission
group: far greater energy can be handled by a Transmission group, meeting together, than would be possible
by the same number of individuals meditating alone. Thus, Transmission Meditation offers a unique opportunity
to serve humanity, working with others, right where you are.

Transmission Meditation is a group service activity which 'steps down' the great spiritual energies that
continually stream into our planet. This transmission process, which makes the energies more useful to
humanity, is similar to that of electrical transformers, which step down the power between generators
and ordinary household outlets. These transformed spiritual energies are gradually lifting all life forms,
changing our world for the better.

During Transmission Meditation, humanity's 'elder brothers', known in the East as the Masters of Wisdom,
direct energies from the highest spiritual planes through the energy centers (chakras) of the group members.
This creates a 'pool' of energy that is more accessible and useful to humanity and the other kingdoms in nature.
Then, based on their greater understanding of our world, the Masters re-direct this stepped-down energy to
wherever it is most needed at that moment in time.

Transmission Meditation is safe, scientific, non-denominational, and unbelievably potent. There is never any
fee to participate. It will not interfere with any other religious or spiritual practice. In fact, it will enhance your
personal meditation and any other service activities in which you may be engaged. Many people find they
can experience and demonstrate love more easily. Others report that their minds are more stimulated and
creative.

For more information about Transmission Meditation
http://www.transmissionmeditation.org

Like in the neighbouring countries where they also live, they face in Thailand strong difficulties to be recognised and to value their particularities. The AFECT organisation contributes since 1981 to the defense of their rights, youth empowerment, elders support and cultural preservation and study. The volunteers will learn about their culture and problematic situation and contribute to AFECT projects and the daily life of the Akha villages.
The main objective of the project is cultural exchange between the volunteers and the local villagers but the participants of the project will also practically work in the communities doing different kinds of support and development works, like renovation of some community spaces or field works and farming with the villagers. The exact nature of the work will depend on the needs of the village at the time of the project.
Study theme: The volunteers will learn about the AFECT campaigns and discover the Akha culture, lifestyle, particularities and problematic situation in Thailand from the inside and from Akha people themselves. An introduction to Akha and Thai language is foreseen.
Special requirements: No special profile is required. Nature lovers, ethnology fans and human rights activists will be particularly interested in this project. Adaptability is required from the participants.
Age range: 18 and over
Project language: English
Leisure time: The free time will be organised according to the weather and the actuality of the communities but in general it will be essentially spent in the community. The volunteers will have the chance to learn about Akha cuisine, massage and specific handicraft. They might have the opportunity to attend traditional Akha ceremonies and events (like the principal Harvest celebration in March). If the weather permits it, trekking in the hills can also be foreseen.
New years Eve, according to the Thai Buddhist calendar takes place in April. The volunteers in the April group will have the great chance to attend the ceremonies and festivities in the village with the local population.
Accommodation: The volunteers will be hosted by the villagers in the communities where they will work. The conditions will be the same as for the Akhas themselves: very basic compared to urban Thailand, but very authentic. Do not expect occidental luxuries in any case.
Location: The project will be held in the Chiang Rai region (North-west Thailand) and the surrounding mountains all the way to the Golden Triangle borders, maybe one of the most beautiful locations in Thailand! Lastly, the beginning of the preparations for our annual celebration, Prairie Appreciation Day have indeed begun, so you have the chance to get a hands on look at what’s in store for us come spring!
Are you stressed? - A study is being conducted by researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center to see how stress-reduction workshops can help women with a family history of breast cancer manage their everyday stresses and cancer-risk concerns. The goal of the study, funded by the National Cancer Institute, is to see whether various stress-management and coping techniques improve immune function.

Specifically, the study will teach women scientifically proven stress-management techniques. All workshops are conducted in a supportive group setting with other women who have a family history of breast cancer. Participants will be asked to complete questionnaires, give blood and saliva samples, and receive two Hepatitis A vaccinations. Some risks involved in participating in the study include the possibility of discomfort and a bruise at the blood draw site, the possibility of distress from discussing your breast cancer risk in a group setting, brief pain at Hepatitis A vaccination injection site and, in rare cases, an allergic reaction to the vaccine. There is no charge to participate.

All participants will receive a set of CDs with relaxation exercises, a tote bag and a workbook filled with stress-management techniques taught in the classes.

The study aims to recruit 96 Seattle-area women with any family history of breast cancer, age 18 to 60.

No family history of breast cancer but still want to help?
We are also looking for women who do not have a family history of breast cancer to participate in a 90 minute study that examines how women process information and how hormone function may differ in women with and without a family history of breast cancer. Participating in this study involves a few short tests that include identification of colors, reading simple words and answering questions about your thoughts and feelings. Height-weight measurements, saliva and a single blood sample will be collected

All study activities will take place on the Hutchinson Center campus in the Prevention Center, which is located in the Robert Arnold Building, 1212 Aloha St, Seattle.

Our website is: http://smartstudies.org/ or http://www.fhcrc.org/science/phs/health_smart/
Or for more information about the Health SMART Study, please call the study information line at (206) 667-2448 or e-mail healthsmart@fhcrc.org
Steering Committee Member:
Alternative Healthcare Access Campaign (AHAC), a nonprofit organization that advocates for and provides alternative healthcare services to homeless and low-income people in King County, seeks steering committee members. Our organizational goals are to:

1. Develop and fund programs that deliver alternative healthcare to homeless and low-income people.

2. Provide information and support to practitioners, activists, and members of the homeless and low-income communities, and others who share our mission of increasing access to alternative care.

3. Compile and track research on the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of alternative healthcare, especially as homeless and low-income people use it.

4. Advocate for governmental and institutional policies that broaden access to alternative healthcare.

We believe that access to quality healthcare is a basic human right, not a privilege that may be limited or denied because of economic status. We believe that "alternative" medicine (either alone or in combination with conventional treatment) is often the optimal healthcare choice, and that some people will find relief from serious illnesses only through alternative therapies. We support the right of homeless and low-income people to choose the type of healthcare they utilize and to participate in the creation of programs and policies that affect their access to services.

Since October 2000, we have provided healthcare services by licensed practitioners (naturopathic doctors, acupuncturists and massage therapists) on a weekly basis. Over 4000 treatments have been provided to 1500 patients, 47% of who have returned for further treatment. We currently offer these clinical services at 6 sites in the King County area, including Tent City, Compass Cascade Women's Center, Angeline's Day Center for Homeless Women, Frye Apartments, Roots Young Adult Center. And Peace for the Streets by Kids from the Streets. We have also been soliciting funds and inkind donations to support our services.

The AHAC Steering Committee serves to provide executive oversight of the organization. The Committee is responsible for managing the day-to-day administrative duties of the organization, as well as for keeping AHAC financially stable. The membership of this committee is open to any person interested in supporting AHAC's mission. We are currently seeking self-motivated individuals who are dedicated to the purpose of AHAC and who can contribute organizational, fundraising, business, outreach, advocacy, or grant writing skills, as well as playing an active role in creating an efficient and effective infrastructure. The steering committee meets on a monthly basis; and works with both other volunteers and our administrative work-study students. There are usually 6-10 hours/month of AHAC duties, and members need to be readily available by phone or email. A one-year commitment is requested

Ideally, we are looking for other alternative medical practitioners, human service professionals or folks with political advocacy experience with homelessness & poverty issues, although all serious applications will be considered.

We are looking for volunteers who are concerned about the issue of access to alternative medicine-especially for low-income and homeless populations. These volunteers should not be alternative medicine practitioners (see our Alternative Medicine Practitioner Opportunity). However, many of our current non-practitioner volunteers are alternative medicine students. Volunteers need not have prior experience in the medical field.

Responsibilities include meeting the alternative health practitioner at the site, finding patients, filling charts, basic filing, and other tasks that may be unique to the site. Some sites require assistance with blood pressure readings and foot soaks.

Commitment would be 6-8 hours a month (3-4 hours per week, twice a month). We can accommodate most schedules.

Alternative Healthcare Access Campaign is a local non-profit in Seattle, Wa
Our first projects began as regular volunteer services at the Women’s health and Hygiene Center (a project of the Archdiocesean Housing Authority) and Mary’s Place (a day shelter for women through the Church of Mary Magdalene) that commenced in the summer of 2000. We have since expanded our services to 6 sites in and outside the Seattle area. AHAC provides healthcare services at a variety of different sites, usually within the framework of an existing structure (a day shelter, a hygiene center, or other service venue), The services we are currently offering are massage therapy, acupuncture, and naturopathic and chiropractic medicine. We are perpetually in the process of establishing more on-site healthcare services at other day programs and shelters, which creates a demand for more volunteer alternative health practitioners.

Hence, we are seeking such practitioners who share in our mission—that access to such services should not be denied to anyone because of income, socioeconomic status, etc.

Alternative healthcare providers can include and are not limited to licensed massage practitioners, acupuncturists, chiropractors, naturopathic doctors, nutritionists, and herbalists just to name a few.
Hours are flexible and can be on a monthly or weekly basis. Please email or see our website at ahacseattle.org for more information on site specific locations

Treatment Resistant Depression (TRD)

Are you concerned that your depression is not responding to treatment? You're not alone. Clinical depression can sometimes be difficult to treat. When a person has tried multiple types of treatment options to treat their depression over the course of months or even years, professionals may refer to the depression as Treatment Resistant Depression (TRD).

Treatment Resistant Depression is simply an episode of depression that resists typical treatments, such as psychotherapy or medications. Studies report that as many as three out of every 10 patients in primary care with depression do not respond to any of the treatment options they've tried. These men and women may have tried a variety of options, including different types of antidepressants, a combination of medications containing an antidepressant and an antipsychotic, multiple types of psychotherapy, and other approaches. Yet no treatment seems to work to ease their depression. Additionally, of the 40% who do respond to the first antidepressant they use, one out of every five has to stop taking it because of side effects.

CALL US AT 877.453.0404 OR VISIT US ONLINE AT WWW.NWCRC.NET

However, they may not understand or be able to express what is happening to them the same way adults can. Their symptoms may be different too. Migraines begin earlier in boys than girls, but after puberty, more girls than boys will develop migraine headaches.

Migraine is a common condition among children and adolescents.
Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes symptoms may seem harmless at first. In fact, you can have type 2 diabetes for years and not even know it. Look for:

Increased thirst and frequent urination. As excess sugar builds up in your bloodstream, fluid is pulled from your tissues. This may leave you thirsty. As a result, you may drink — and urinate — more than usual.
Extreme hunger. Without enough insulin to move sugar into your cells, your muscles and organs become depleted of energy. This triggers intense hunger that may persist even after you eat.
Weight loss. Despite eating more than usual to relieve your constant hunger, you may lose weight. Without the energy sugar supplies, your muscle tissues and fat stores may simply shrink.
Fatigue. If your cells are deprived of sugar, you may become tired and irritable.
Blurred vision. If your blood sugar level is too high, fluid may be pulled from your tissues — including the lenses of your eyes. This may affect your ability to focus.
Slow-healing sores or frequent infections. Type 2 diabetes affects your ability to heal and fight infections. Hello, I am posting as a favor for my good friend. He has recently been diagnosed with severe depression, and I am trying to help him....I even drive from bellevue to his house twice a day to make sure he is eating. He was a contractor and lost his company, his companion, family, and has no job, due to the economy. Within 3 months, if his house is not finished, he will lose it to the bank. Long story short, I need to get his house on the market as soon as possible, or he will be on the street, literally. His house just needs the labor to finish small projects. Knowledge in tile work (cutting/placing/grouting), painting doors (easy, just needs a person to do it), picking weeds, general cleaning, moving closet shelving to another closet, and sealing floors. If anyone could donate their time (even an hour), to help me and my friend, it would be greatly appreciated! This can be a great opportunity to get some skills. Please email me if you would like to help a person in need! Thanks!
