<br>
You may remember the first launch, last year, on January 22nd - you can read about that in The New York Times, here: <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/22/technology/start-ups/22blogpaper.html?_r=2" rel="nofollow">http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/22/technology/start-ups/22blogpaper.html?_r=2</a>

THE PRINTED BLOG is the world's only print platform dedicated to publishing the best blog (and photographic) content found on the web. We are looking for outstanding bloggers, who write on a variety of topics, to submit work for consideration. We're looking for everything: sports, technology, lifestyle / sex, personal, music, celebrity, showbiz, etc. The only thing we don't want is boring. If you're boring, we don't want you.
<br>
<br>
We want bloggers who have a voice, who have something interesting to say - a perspective on the world that people need to hear about. We don't care if you get 1,000,000 page views a day, or if you get 10 visitors a month. If you are a fascinating person, if you can use language to teach, impress, educate, entertain, challenge, inspire, and get people to stand up and shout, consider submitting your work.
<br>
<br>
THE PRINTED BLOG is also the first platform to pay bloggers based on the number of our paid subscribers. At first, it will be in the tens of dollars - eventually, hundreds or more, per published article. We do not ask anyone to write anything new for us - just for permission to republish your work. We do NOT ask for exclusivity, in fact, we want you to promote your own work, and to make money from it, in any other way you can.
<br>

When you're published in THE PRINTED BLOG, you get money, and exposure for your great work.

<br>
Request for Proposals
<br>
TechStart Fall 2010-2011 STEM Curriculum for Grades 3-6
<br>
Deadline for proposal: August 19
<br>
<br>
Issued by Jenn Johnson, Program Manager, TechStart Program
<br>
Technology Access Foundation
<br>
August 12, 2010
<br>
<br>
BACKGROUND
<br>
The Technology Access Foundation (TAF) launched the TechStart program in 2000 in an after-school environment in an effort to bridge the digital divide for elementary and middle school students of color. TAF believes that all students are natural learners, but without a strong educational foundation and a belief that learning can be fun, many students fall behind by 8th grade. This is especially true for students of color.
<br>
Today, TechStart provides an educational enrichment program focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) while incorporating technology as a critical learning tool. Each class uses technology-based activities and lessons to improve math literacy, technology fluency, critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills. The curriculum is comprised of lessons that incorporate Washington State Grade Level Expectations (GLEs) in Science, Math, Reading, and Writing. By using current technology and project-based learning, children gain both academic and technical skills. The TechStart after-school program currently serves 250 students per year.
<br>
<br>
PROJECT OVERVIEW
<br>
<br>
Educational Philosophy – Approach
<br>
TechStart uses a blend of direct instruction, inquiry based lessons, Project Based Learning (PBL), and an Authentic Intellectual Work (AIW) approach to deliver rigorous and relevant STEM enrichment to our students, who are grouped into multi-age classes.
<br>
<br>
Educational Technology - Tools
<br>
Students use computers and robotics in TechStart to create examples of learning that are relevant to their lives. In class, each student has their own computer with internet access. Educational Technology tools like the ones listed below offer a platform for creating meaning, problem solving, critical thinking, and creativity.
<br>
<br>
Tools – Example Educational Technology Programs Used in TechStart (not all are required for this RFP)
<br>
• Scratch
<br>
Scratch is a programming environment for young learners developed by the Lifelong Kindergarten research group at the MIT Media Lab. (<a href="http://scratch.mit.edu" rel="nofollow">http://scratch.mit.edu</a>)
<br>
• Alice
<br>
Like Scratch, Alice is a programming environment designed to be a student's first exposure to object-oriented programming. It allows students to learn basic computer science while creating animated movies, simple video games, where students control the behavior of 3D objects and characters in a virtual world. (www.alice.org)
<br>
• LEGO Mindstorms Robotics
<br>
LEGO Mindstorms is a line of programmable robotics that requires both physical engineering and digital programming. Students can build and program their robots in ways that meet a variety of curriculum goals. (www.education.rec.ri.cmu.edu/content/lego)
<br>
• Other tools: Weebly, MSOffice, BrainPop, Internet, Phrogram, Kodu, Web apps, simulators, hands-on activities
<br>
<br>
Topics – STEM content
<br>
TechStart typically picks an overall STEM theme to examine over the course of a school year, and divides that into 3 distinct units. For example, one year’s theme was environmentalism.
<br>
• In the fall, the students learned about energy efficiency and created projects using Scratch.
<br>
• In the winter, students made animations about climate change, the Great Barrier Reef, and organic farming using Alice.
<br>
• Finally, in the spring they learned about how the field of Robotics could be used to help our planet.
<br>
<br>
This year, we are looking at health and human bodies as the overarching theme, and we are dividing that up into deeper examinations of health, nutrition, cells, DNA and genetics. Direct instruction, vocabulary, independent research, and inquiry based activities are all vital components to our curriculum. As a part of our AIW model, we also aim to teach students about cutting-edge scientific and real world discoveries in these fields.
<br>
<br>
REQUIRED DELIVERABLES
<br>
This RFP is seeking curriculum for 1 TechStart quarter (Fall 2010).
<br>
The grade range for this multi-age class is 3-6.
<br>
The technology tool for this quarter is Scratch and the STEM topic is Health & Nutrition.
<br>
The TechStart fall quarter lasts 10 weeks.
<br>
Each class meets 2 days per week for 1.5 hours each day.
<br>
This totals 20 class sessions and 30 hours of instruction.
<br>
Due to holidays, assessments, extensions, emergency cancellations, fun days, and events, TechStart only requires lesson plans for 15 class sessions, totaling 22.5 hours of instruction.
<br>
<br>
The selected curriculum developer is expected to produce the following deliverables, in an MSWord document:
<br>
1. Unit overview
<br>
2. Core EALRs addressed in Science, Math, Writing, and Technology
<br>
3. Teacher guides
<br>
4. Daily lesson plans for 15 class sessions, 1.5 hours each
<br>
5. Assessments: Pre & Post, formative, and summative
<br>
6. Student “handouts”: e.g., activity instructions, daily agendas, graphic organizers
<br>
EXAMPLES CAN BE PROVIDED UPON REQUEST
<br>
<br>
ASSUMPTIONS AND AGREEMENTS
<br>
The project must be completed by September 16, 2010.
<br>
A preliminary budget for this project has been approved.
<br>
At the conclusion of the project, all materials developed by the project team will become the exclusive property of TAF. In addition, any and all work sheets and other working documentation will also become the property of TAF.
<br>
<br>
REQUIRED PROPOSAL FORMAT
<br>
The proposal must contain the following elements:
<br>
1. Resume & references
<br>
2. Examples of past curriculum creation work, either via web portfolio or digital/printed documents
<br>
3. Itemized budget, detailing required and optional services and expenses. All costs incurred by the vendor in preparing the proposal, or costs incurred other than those agreed upon in the final contract will be solely the responsibility of the vendor, and not the responsibility of TAF.
<br>
4. The vendor should include a timeline for completing the project.
<br>
<br>
