Two veteran local musicians are looking for someone with strong vocals to complete a trio and, well, make some money. We have agency booking available for us, as well.

If you have good vocal chops and a need to get out and play for people, drop us a line. Male or female. Age not important. I totally respect the person who posted his add in this format. He's probably the only honest person to ever post an add on the musicans post.I see adds listed all the time of people claiming to be pro's when they have no idea what a pro is. I also see adds saying i have a music degree or performance degree well that doesn't make you a pro either i've seen shitty musicans with degrees.I consider myself to be a semi-pro musican and guess what i play in a band in clubs probably 2-3 times a week.I can play my instrument and sing lead vocals or backup if someone else wants to sing.I can even fill in on bass if the need arises.I can play and sing 75-100 songs at the drop of a hat,but guess what i still think i have a ways to go to claim that pro status.Have you ever seen Max Baker from Mamas Pride play he's a pro.Come on pepole get a clue a pro is a very good well rounded musican. This isn't a freaking game it's serious bussiness.

Thirty-five participants, 21 new, original songs, 7 bands, 3 weeks, 1 night. However you add it up, the Band Scramble has become one of the favorite events of St. Louis Musicians. Contestants sign up for vocals, guitar, bass, drums, or “other”. They are then randomly assigned into 5 piece bands. After the groupings are announced, they are given three weeks to write and learn three originals songs. On the night of the Band Scramble, these never before heard bands will perform their original songs in head to head competition.

Previous Band Scrambles have taken place at Frederick’s Music Lounge, The Way Out Club, and Off Broadway. This will be the sixth Band Scramble and the second at Off Broadway. The stage, and sound of the venue are unequaled in St. Louis, and the Scramble offers a unique opportunity for those who have never played a venue of this size or even those who have never played in front of people at all. Sign ups will be held at Off Broadway (3509 Lemp) and at The Chippewa Chapel (Thursday nights at The Wedge – 442 Bates). Unlike previous Band Scrambles, enrollment is limited to only 35 spots this go round. Participants will be invited to sign up beginning at 8:00 pm on Thursday, December 18th at The Wedge – first come, first served. Groupings will be announced on Thursday, January 8th giving the bands just over three weeks before the competition takes place on Saturday, January 31st. A panel of celebrity judges will determine the winners, and prizes will be awarded to the top three bands.

The cost to enter the Band Scramble is $15 per participant. Proceeds from the Band Scramble will be used to provide scholarships for children to attend Dave Simon’s Rock School. The Rock School offers children the opportunity to play in a band with other children. The format is similar to that of the Band Scramble, so it is a perfect fit. Event organizers hope to raise enough money to send 3 or more children to Rock School next summer.

Despite its long name, The Chippewa Chapel Traveling Guitar Circle, Medicine Show, Musicians’ Networking and Open Mic Night comes from humble beginnings. The Chippewa Chapel is an offshoot of the Noiseday Hootenanny, which began almost ten years ago at Frederick’s Music Lounge. Due to Fred’s lack of a Sunday liquor license, drinking buddies who would drop by on the Sabbath began referring to the little shrine as The Chippewa Chapel. Frederick’s is closed, but the open mic continues. Look for them every Thursday night at The Wedge.
People must be sick of hearing about Utopia by now, but I feel like I should respond to the latest round of posts…so please just skip this if you are uninterested.

To ‘Nice People, Awful Place’: I appreciate your input and am curious to know if you were bothered by other bands practicing, or simply by the “loud caucophony” of your own “bouncing sound waves” in the room, or both? Your complaint is lack of soundproofing but your description refers solely to acoustic treatment. Can you really make an informed decision on “the rooms” in a 25,000+ sq ft building based upon one hour in one room? For all I know, you or someone else may have been playing with the door open or had the PA settings jacked up. Maybe there was a valid sound issue that we should resolve? Did you discuss it with staff or ask to move to another studio? Some bands love their sound in one room and hate it in another. Some only want larger rooms and others only like the smaller ones. Most are happy just to have a room, any room. All scenarios are fine. Every band is different and we encourage them to try a variety of spaces to get a feel for their preferences. Did you take a tour or check the website before you booked? We post an equipment list online with pics AND the following info @ http://www.utopiastl.com/info.htm#AMENITIES “The rooms are designed as live studios to give a decent impression of what you will actually sound like live--not acoustically dead like a recording room, but with sound-deadening applications to prevent you from being distracted by the band next to you (staggered beam construction, no vents, double sheetrock, double-insulation), plus acoustic treatments … We make no guarantees regarding soundproofing; expectations vary greatly from band to band.”

For the record, we have no concrete or metal walls—each room contains 3 interior walls constructed of drywall and one exterior brick wall (which is half brick, half stone in the basement). Every single A/V Production studio I’ve ever visited—TV stations, radio, recording studios—and many rehearsal halls, were also created inside refurbished buildings of warehouse/industrial origin.

Utopia Studios is a band rehearsal hall, nothing more or less. It is a place to play music at all hours--safely, affordably, in relative comfort. We provide a simple service that no one else offers in St. Louis—equipped rooms by the hour or month, a secure place to play loud without cops getting called, someplace with occupancy permits to ensure a degree of responsibility towards the bands using it. A rehearsal hall is not meant to be glamorous, or swanky, or a recording studio. It IS meant to get you prepared for the next show and the next album.

We do not discriminate over genre of music, covers vs originals, pro vs semi-pro vs ‘simi pro’ (jk!). Everything about Utopia is dictated by the MUSICIANS USING IT. The hours, the rates, the equipment, the acoustics, the booking options --it all reflects what people need, want and are able & willing to pay for. If it doesn’t work, it gets scrapped and replaced with a better idea. The options are fine-tuned as we go from year to year. Keep in mind that this place is a work in progress that began with one room in a sprawling warehouse. In less than 4 years we now have 22 studios for rent, including a wrestling gym, dance studio, lounge, storage & rental zone, and now a showcase soundstage too. Every dime the studio earns goes back into improving the facility, as anyone who has been here over a period of years can confirm. The fun part for me is watching the place develop over time, feeling the energy put out by the diverse groups I get to hear as I wander down the hall--it might be experimental psychobilly in one room, R&B in the next, a mariachi band with full horns section blazing, mathcore, black metal, belly dance classes and MMA training, all ongoing at once. I really like that aspect—you never know who you’ll see tomorrow. If that sounds like a nightmare to you, this isn’t the place for you.

We used to have a proper ‘dead’ room, historically used for recording by Miles Davis, Ike & Tina Turner, etc, at our previous location. Even the pickiest of bastards would admire its acoustics. Where were you then? You did not support it, and it went away. Maybe you heard it was too expensive because that is what your guitarist or the RFT told you, or maybe it just wasn’t something you needed at the time? It was torn down and that piece of history is gone for good. So we made a fresh start, working from scratch. The rooms we have now will only continue to get better and better--as long as people continue to support them, of course.

Again, thanks for reading and if you have more suggestions for the studio, I’d love to have them emailed to me privately ‘offlist’!

In appreciation, I would give the group leader a $60 gratuity.

The songs are secular, usually in an easy 3-part harmony. Acoustic guitarist seeks rhythm section for alternative jam band, experimental acoustic stuff. I write songs and have a bunch ready to record, most of which are in demo form with just me and the guitar at the moment. Would love to do something along the lines of what a really bad ass, tight, groove based acoustic trio would sound like if they listend to everything from Burnside to Bach. I'd prefer an acoustic bassist (or someone willing to play acoustic bass) acoustic/amplified to be more specific, and a small kit drummer. Either of them capable of doing some harmony vocals would be great.
I'd rather not play "let's name the influences" but rather let's just get together and see what comes of it.
