The Alaska Service Corps (ASC) & Serve Alaska Youth Corps (SAYC) are designed to provide young adults with the opportunity to work and live in outdoor settings with a crew of 5 to 9 people of diverse backgrounds, while performing service projects on Alaska’s public lands. The ASC & SAYC seek to enhance the skills, education and attitudes needed for work and productive lives. The work performed by these service corps is recreation, conservation, and public safety related. The Serve Alaska Youth Corps follows a similar structure as the ASC but is designed specifically for disconnected, Alaskan youth - ages of 16-24 - who are struggling with challenges to their education and employment. Both service corps operate on a seasonal basis.

Position Description
<br>
The Regional Manager-Northern (RM-N) is responsible for supervising a Member Development Coordinator and a Field Coordinator, who aid the RM-N in the supervision of 3-6 Corps crews. Each crew works on independent service projects throughout Northern and Central Alaska. The RM-N is responsible for the daily operation of those service projects. The RM-N ensures that crew work is completed on time and according to project specifications, by communicating regularly with the Team Leaders and project sponsors, and implements trainings for the Team Leaders and Crew Members. The RM-N reports directly to the Director of Programs.

Job Duties/Responsibilities
<br>
Project Implementation:
<br>
Implements and manages Corps projects to ensure compliance with project agreements; Ensures all necessary equipment and materials are available on schedule, in collaboration with project sponsors; Schedules projects for crews and staff, in collaboration with the Director of Programs; Provides technical assistance where needed; Ensures that all safety procedures are followed; Manages and enforces policies and procedures in relation to tools and equipment, safety program, fleet equipment, and budget; Assesses material/educational needs and makes appropriate purchases; Responsible for updating procedural documents as needed.

Project Monitoring:
<br>
Observes work in progress; Inspects completed work for compliance with specifications, quality and quantity by visiting project sites; Makes regular contact with each Northern Team Leader; Oversees implementation of service projects; Work schedule will vary depending on time of year and number of projects.

Supervision and Training:
<br>
Provides regular support and supervision to the Member Development Coordinator and Field Coordinator and aids the Coordinators in providing these to Team Leaders; Evaluates Corps Coordinators on a regularly scheduled basis and ensures that Coordinators do this for Team Leaders and Corps Members; Works with the Corps Coordinators to organize and implement all necessary orientations and on-going trainings for Team Leaders and Crew Members; Enforces policies and procedures governing the program; Assists in the mediation of Corps Member conflicts as they arise.

Liaison with Project Sponsors:

Maintains regular contact with sponsors throughout the duration of each project (e.g. logistics, materials, reports, and evaluations).

Assists Team Leaders in maintaining project paperwork; Must be familiar with all documents pertaining to individual projects including: agreements, budgets, production information, safety records, etc; Ensures that all Corps documentation reaches appropriate administrators, according to established timelines.

Program Support:

Manages Corps crews and their project activities, staff & crew schedules; Works directly with the Director of Programs to ensure that project specifications and deadlines are met; Ensures program rules and regulations are adhered to by Coordinators, Team Leaders, and Corps Members. May act as a Team Leader, in the absence of Corps Coordinators; Understands how to perform work required in all projects; Assists in resolving issues between Corps Members and staff; Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

-Baccalaureate degree in Outdoor Education, a related field, or equivalent - required

-Wilderness First Responder certification - required
<br>
-Two years work experience - vocational/technical training, construction, landscaping, forestry, resource management, environmental studies, park management or related field - strongly preferred
<br>
-Experience and familiarity living and working in the outdoors - required
<br>
-Two years supervisory experience - required, preferably working with people from diverse backgrounds in crew settings

-Experience coordinating volunteer activities

-Strong technical skills, especially trail-building techniques - required

Knowledge of direct response programs (direct mail operations, telemarketing, and online), and production of collateral materials, demonstrated through experience.

• Proficient with Windows-based word processing, spreadsheets, databases, e-mail and the Internet. Expertise in establishing and operating a computerized database for membership fundraising, managing volunteer records, and grant tracking.

• Demonstrated success and comfort working as a self-starter to meet deadlines and dollar goals.

• Ability to work collaboratively, effectively, and tactfully—in writing and in person—with members, donors and staff.

Nutrition courses are taught by chefs and nutritionists who volunteer their talents to teach families how to make healthy food choices on a limited budget. Courses are offered for adults, teens, children, parents and children together, and those living with HIV/AIDS, and include four or six two-hour sessions. Each class includes hands-on meal preparation led by a chef who teaches participants that cooking healthy foods can be simple, enjoyable, and delicious. Financial professionals are also recruited to teach the money management curriculum, Saving Smart Spending Smart.

AmeriCorps members are part of the local and national Operation Frontline team and take part in all associated training and activities. AmeriCorps members will receive orientation training from Share Our Strength’s national Operation Frontline team as well as Operation Food Search’s Operation Frontline staff. Members will be part of a peer network of AmeriCorps members from around the nation and be a part of regular training opportunities including monthly calls and an in-person retreat (for full-time members).
